$2 Billion More for Failed "Cars for Cash"
In a knee-jerk reaction to spectacular failure, Congress has just approved an additional $2 Billion for the "Cash for Cars" program. That's the program that ran out of money after much less than a month of operation. It's intended purpose is to stimulate new car sales by giving customers a rebate of up to $4,500 when they trade in an old car for a new one.
Let's do some math....
The program ran out of its original $1 Billion in a matter of days. So, how many more days will it be before the additional $2 Billion runs out? The program, officially known as CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System), is a bureaucratic nightmare full of red tape. In other words, business as usual for a federal program.
Rather than actually fixing the confusing program (see video report, WTNH), Congress simply threw more money at it.

How Government Health Care Would Work (see Cash for Clunkers)
UPDATE 7/31/2009: $2 Billion More for Failed "Cars for Cash"
The federal government wants to help you buy a new car. They just don't know how to do that efficiently. How typical. A program called "Cash for Clunkers," which started on July 1, has already burned its $1 Billion in funding, and members of Congress are making a confused rush to "fix" the program. The program is officially called CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) (see the website here).
The CARS website makes no mention of the program's funding crisis. A PDF document there says, "The estimated funds remaining shown on the gauge to the right are estimated funds only. This page will be updated daily for informational purposes only. This is not official fund balancedealers should refer to when entering in their transactions." Problem is, there is no guage shown and they are not updating it daily as stated. At 10:40 am (CDT) on July 31, the PDF stated that the document was "Last updated 7/28/2009 at 9am EST."
The idea behind Cash for Clunkers was to give hefty rebates to people for trading in their old cars. "Under the plan as enacted," reports CNN, "vehicles purchased after July 1 will be eligible for refund vouchers worth $3,500 to $4,500 on traded-in gas guzzlers. The trade-in vehicle has to get combined city and highway fuel economy ratings of 18 miles per gallon or less."
Poorly funded, poorly administrated, poorly planned to begin with, Cash for Clunkers serves as a precursor of how government run health care would work.
Moe Lane wrote a good summary of the situation on July 30, which noted the following (emphasis added):
"...the program started on July 1, they only published the actual rules Friday, and they’re still working out how to get the dealers their money. If you’re shrugging over that, consider this: what’s essentially happening here is that car dealerships are giving $4,500 interest-free, unguaranteed loans to the federal government… and the determination of whether or not those loans get paid off is more or less going to be at the discretion of mid-level bureaucrats at the NHTSA. Even if they do repay every loan, it’s apparently going to take time for the system to smooth out; it’s an open question whether it’ll straighten out before the official end of the program in November. And the car dealerships - the only producers of goods in this particular equation, and the ones that the government is ostensibly trying to help - get all the headaches."
How would you like health care to be run like that? You wouldn't, of course, but remember that the same fools who cobbled together Cash for Cars are the same fools who slammed together the 1,018 page health care legislation that just failed to pass in Congress. How many members of Congress have actually read the entire 1,018 page document, let alone actually understand it? The Cars for Cash legislation was far fewer pages and far less complicated, yet it collapsed in spectacular failure within a month of beginning.
In typical government fashion, more money is being sought to extend the horrible program. According to CNN, "One of the program's main champions in Congress, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., told CNN that the Michigan, Ohio and Indiana congressional delegations are working on a $2 billion extension of Clunkers program."
It is the stupidity and mad inefficiency of programs like Cash for Clunkers that has so many Americans leary of any government run health care. People are right to question how well an extremely complicated system such as health care - which directly affects life and death medical decisions - when a simple used car program is so badly screwed up by the very people who want to control your medical care.

Obama in Economic Wonderland
Barack Obama has declared that the economic crisis is over. The nation has breathed a collective sigh of "Huh?" Andrew Breitbart wrote about this on July 20:
US President Barack Obama defended his administration's response to the economic crisis over the last six months, declaring: "The fire is now out." "I think that we have stepped back from the abyss. I think we've put out the fire," he said in an interview with PBS, according to a transcript released by the TV station.
Huh? There's no more "fire" to worry about in our current economic crisis? I'm not so sure about the economic fire being out, but it seems clear that Obama's pants are still burning out of control.
Even before Barack Obama was sworn into office as our first foreign-born (and therefore illegitimate) president, he was working hard to "save" the U.S. from "worst economic crisis since the Great Depression." He did that by working closely with outgoing President Bush to push through a "stimulus" that would quadruple the national debt. After being sworn in, he has continued to push stimulus spending and legislation, including health care "reform." (Keep in mind that the same "oh my God, it's a crisis"-style rhetoric has been applied to the issue of health care as was applied to the "worst economic crisis since the Great Depression." Can we expect Joe Biden to admit that they've been wrong about that as well, and will Obama declare that the health care fire is out six months from now?)
In early July, Vice Moron Joe Biden made an astounding statement to George Stephanopoulos in a television interview:
"The truth is that we, and everyone else, misread the economy." He noted that unemployment is now "much too high," hovering just under 10 percent nationally. "And so, the truth is, there was a misreading." Biden's point, made less than three weeks ago, was that things are much worse than "everybody" thought.
This makes Obama's declaration that the crisis is over all the more mysterious. Biden, like Boss Obama, is either lying through his teeth or is simply stupid. I tend to favor the former theory. Which idiot to we believe? Biden, who just told us that things are actually much worse than they thought, or Obama, who wants us to believe the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression is now, suddenly, not nearly as bad as we've been led - by him - to believe?
The truth is that we have a bunch of imbeciles running the circus in Washington. The truth is that they don't know what the hell they're doing. The truth is that the confusion and the lying are so convoluted and intense in both the White House and Congress that the Democrats cannot even coordinate their own campaign of lies and disinformation.

Economic Stimulus Payment Defined
This is going around the Internet.
Subject: Economic Stimulus Payment (ESP) defined...
This year, taxpayers received an Economic Stimulus Payment. For those of you who still don't understand the purpose of the ESP, here is an explanation of it using the Q and A format:
Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen.
Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.
If you spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.
If you purchase a computer it will go to India.
If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Chile, Mexico , Honduras , and Guatemala.
If you buy a car it will go to Japan.
If you purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan.
And none of it will help the American economy.
We need to keep that money here in America!
You can keep the money in America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spend it on prostitutes, beer or tattoos, since those are the only businesses still in the U.S.

Time Bomb in Washington. Tick. Tick. Tick...
With trillions of dollars in debt piling up under the "guidance" of the Obama Regime and its economic "advisors," the United States comes closer every minute to complete economic meltdown. The U.S. debt is larger now than ever, and we have not yet begun to see the unavoidable effects of the coming catastrophe it will bring. It is one of the great ironies of history that the Obama "stimulus" is actually doing just the opposite. The same people who screamed about the obscene spending on the Iraq War are now gleefully spending far, far more than all of the Iraq War spending totalled up. The irony is rich, if less than enjoyable.
The U.S. Congress has become like an amphetamine addict; the initial dose makes him feel better, more energetic and more able to carry on. But that dose slow him down when the drug wears off and the euphoria loses its glow. Then he's in big trouble. Sooner or later, the Obama stimulus dose will wear off, and we will be in a world of pain. Like that addict, there is no escape from the inevitable downer. Unlike that addict, the Congress seems eager to overdose.
Robert Romano wrote a brilliant summary of the bad situation we've allowed our politicians to get us into. Romano is the Senior Editor of ALG News Bureau and wrote this on GetLiberty.org on May 28:
Last week, Moody’s downgraded Japan’s sovereign credit rating from AAA to AA2. The UK suffered a similar fate from Standard & Poor’s as the medium-term outlook on her Majesty’s debt was lowered from “stable” to “negative.” (Note: "Sovereign debt" is a debt instrument that is guaranteed by a government.)
That's worrisome enough. Japan and the United Kingdom are/were strong trading partners of the United States. They are both economic engines that help drive the world economy. Neither of them is nearly as big as the U.S., however, and the U.S. is about to lose its AAA rating too.
Amid the ensuing economic and political fallout, now all eyes are turning to the largest sovereign debt in the world. Ever. It is held by the United States government. And, it is a ticking time bomb. With every vote congressmen make to plunge the nation deeper into debt—now more than $11.3 trillion (and growing)—the clock draws closer to zero. Even Barack Obama has to admit that it is “unsustainable,” although in the same breath he proposes another trillion dollar bailout or a vast expansion of the government health care monstrosity.
DeRoy Murdoch of the Scripps Howard News Service, offers his take on the U.S. federal spending orgy and it's alleged attempt to "stimulate" the economy. He wrote this on May 28:
While Obama is refreshingly realistic, he resembles a man who strolls into a bar, sees that his wallet is empty, and then slaps a round of drinks for everyone onto his wheezing credit card.
Rather than use America's rapidly deteriorating public finances to restore fiscal discipline after G.W Bush's deplorable spend-o-rama, Obama is digging America into a deeper hole -- not with a shovel, but with a backhoe. If he continues, the ensuing canyon walls will collapse and crush us. Look how spectacularly Washington squanders your money:... (More at Scripps Howard...)
"Stimulus?" I think not. But is it panic time yet? I think not, not quite yet. Today we see headlines that seem reassuring. One, for example, is "US government debt to keep top rating, Moody's says." That's nice, but it doesn't take into account the severe crisis that other nations are going through. Remember that the Great Depression in the United States dragged the rest of the world down. This time around, it may be the other way around. Like that addict I alluded to earlier, we may be basking in the warm glow of a temporary dose-induced high. But all around us, fellow addicts are jittery, and jittery addicts desperate for that next high can be very dangerous.

Obama 2012 Campaign Up and Running

Are Tea Parties Working? (UPDATED)
UPDATE, 10-31-2009: Things have changed since I wrote this in April, 2009. The Tea Parties have shown that they can directly and profoundly affect local and national politics. Bring in supporting factors like Glenn Beck, Michelle Malkin and others and the Tea Party "movement" is quickly coming into its own, finally beginning to gel into something cohesive.
Bill Hennessy sums this up well in his October 31, 2009 column at Big Government, titled "New York 23: When a Nation Calls." It's a must-read. Be sure to also see "Washington Post: ACORN Video Creates New Conservative Star."
*** original post below ***
Depends on what you mean by "working." The nationwide "tea parties," which are protests against wasteful spending by the government, especially within the "stimulus" legislation, are certainly working in terms of getting a lot of armchair warriors to sign online petitions and to mail tea bags to their representatives.
But let's be clear about this: I support the Tea Party movement, but I see flaws in it. The purpose of the tea party protests is not merely to get online signatures and to overload congressional mailboxes with tea, for those tactics and methods must produce actual results. That is, the marching, the online ranting, the digital signatures, the tea bags need to cause action on the part of the government.
So far, it's shown no real sign of having any real effect. Legislators, from aldermen to congressmen, are not feeling any pressure. In fact, most are either ignoring the tea parties or just plain laughing at them. Indeed, there are many now who are Attacking The Tea Party Movement.
The Economist noted, on April 9, that "No one thinks this stuff is effective. And yet conservatives are gearing up next week for a series of disaggregated 'Tea Parties' modeled on the Boston Tea Party of 1773."
Chicago News Bench wrote about it on April 10, in which we said that the tea party organizers need to rethink their tactics and "get serious" about staging real protests.
NetRightNation has an interesting post about this today (emphasis added):
Just as conservatives once mocked the online wave that helped Barack Obama surf into the White House, liberals are now heaping scorn on the tea party movement. This Web phenomenon may bring tens of thousands of small-government conservatives to tax day rallies across the country Wednesday. They Twitter. They Facebook. They blog. They mail tea bags to Congress. It’s an outgrowth of the tax-revolt movement that has been simmering on the libertarian right for years. But the idea got new life as conservatives, upset at the scope of the Obama agenda, passed around online a clip of CNBC personality Rick Santelli railing against the president’s mortgage bailout. Full Post...
The Tea Party organizers are missing some huge opportunities here. Rather than protesting the "stimulus" and "porkulus" and wasteful government spending (which they cannot and will not slow down or stop), "the movement" should be screaming about the march to totalitarianism that Obama is leading along. The higher taxes are part of that, but a small part. Worse are the threats to free speech (a proposed resurrection of the "Fairness Doctrine" and the "Smart Grid" and cyberlaws), threats to freedom (the GIVE Act/HR 1388), and so much more. These are the bigger, more urgent issues.
Taxes can easily be reduced. Over time, taxes go up, then down, then back up, then back down. Once the government takes away our liberties, however, they are rarely given back to the people.
There are major differences between the Obama Internet Campaign and the current Tea Party Internet Campaign. The Obama people were unified. They followed a single guiding entity - the Obama campaign group. They issued marching orders and followers followed, often from one state to another to hand out literature and ring doorbells. Obama's army was working for a single, easy-to-understand goal: The election of Barack Obama.
The tea parties, on the other hand, are much less unified and have no easily defined goal. Many local tea party organizers , in hundreds of cities across America, look to the "Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party (NTDTP)." The name is unfortunate; what happens after April 15? Well, you could click on a link at NTDTP's website (way down at the bottom of the page) to the "Tea Party Revolution," a separate group. There, they tell you that the movement will continue after April 15, but they give no real direction the troops. You'll also find a link at NTDTP's website to "ReTeaParty," which calls itself "Rick Santelli's Tea Party."
Until recently, the two groups virtually ignored each other. You'll still find events listed at ReTeaParty that are not listed at Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party's site, and vice versa. Meanwhile, there are other, smaller groups out there that are not well coordinated with each other or with any central guiding authority.
In fact, while NTDTP is by far the largest organization in terms of membership and publicity, there is nothing official about them. The Obama campaign, on the other hand, was official and was looked to by every Obama supporter for guidance. As big as NTDTP has become (and the deserve much praise for their phenomenol growth), there is nothing official about them.
I don't want to make too big a deal out of the "non-official" reality of NTDTP, however. It's a problem at the moment only because it causes confusion for people searching for tea party information. If there was one, authoritative, central website to go to it would strengthen the ability to get information out rapidly.
The operators of ReTeaParty and other tea party-oriented websites, such as DontGo and SurgeUSA, should shut down their sites and put redirects on them so that people who click to their links automatically go to NTDTP's site, which has, by default, become the primary source for tea party information. If the DontGo and SurgeUSA and other sites truly care about "the movement," they will put ego aside for the sake of the very movement they say they support.
That "information," however, presents another challenge. Obama's campaign was simple with a simple goal: Elect Obama. The goal for the Tea Party Movement is much more complicated. The NTDTP's website does not really explain their goals. On their "About" page, we see the following, which gives the reader no direction and only wondering what the exact goal of "the movement" really is (emphasis added):
The Tea Party protests....set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress. Specifically, the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget. [Rick Santelli] called for a “Chicago Tea Party” where advocates of the free-market system could join in a protest against out of control government spending. A few days later, grassroots activists and average Joe Americans began organizing what would soon become the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party effort. On February 27th, an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the street in 40+ cities accross the country in the first nationwide “Tea Party” protest.
NOTE: The first nationwide Tea Party protests occured on February 27, although there were independent protests happening before then. As recently as ten days ago, a woman wrote to me to ask how she could organize a tea party in her state. I referred her to the Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party website, but can you imagine an Obama organizer a year ago wondering where she could find information about organizing a rally? She would have gone straight to the Obama campaign's website.
NTDTP's "About" page, continued:
Organizers of the February 27th events pledged to continue on with an even bigger and better protest to follow the first. With April 15th being “Tax Day”, it was decided to schedule the second round of Tea Party protests to ride alongside the tax deadline. And with that, the “Tax Day Tea Party”, the second round of the Nationwide Tea Party protests, moved into reality.
Okay, nice. But what does it all mean? Exposing "the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress" is fine, but would somebody please tell me how the tea parties are doing this? That is, after many years of talk radio and bloggers and Fox News "exposing" the "liberal agenda" etc., what is the Tea Party Movement doing to further it? Theyr'e preaching to the choir. As for "exposing" the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget," ditto.
More importantly, what action is "the movement" achieving? Online signatures? Tea bags sent to Congress? The federal pork continues to sizzle. The "stimulus" bills keep piling up. Obama's youth corps is strapping up its boots. Congress is considering a bill that would allow Obama to shut down the Internet. The march to totalitarianism steps forward unimpeded, and all the Facebook groups and online rants and polite lunch hour marches will - not - accomplish - anything.
I'll repeat what I wrote on April 10:
If Thomas Jeffereson, Ben Franklin, Sam Adams and the rest of our Founders had settled for the mild-mannered tactics of today's "Tea Parties," we would still be paying taxes to the British Crown....Either you're serious about a protest, or you're not. Either you're serious about a "movement," or you're not. Cute and clever marketing campaigns are well and good, but only if they can inspire boots-on-the-ground, physical action against Authority.
The Tea Party movement should continue, despite its flaws. It will, of course. It is, after all, still a very new phenomenon and with time it will inevitably evolve. One can only hope that it will evolve into a truly viable movement that demands results (not merely asks for them), has a solid plan of action that includes both tactics and long term strategy, and focuses more on the real threats to America rather than allowing itself to be distracted by tax rates. I'm certainly with them on the tax rates, but as I noted above, there are more urgent things to protest.
Daniel Ruwe stated it well in his April 9 post on TheNextRight.com:
The Tea Party demonstrations are not without value. They inspire the base, and can serve as a first step into the world of conservative grassroots. And they do inspire media coverage, much of it positive. But protests are no substitute for ideas and organization. The Tea Parties can be an effective gimmick—but they are only a gimmick. They should play only a very secondary role in the conservative arsenal.

Shame and Hope for America
No, not all of you. The current economic "crisis" is a convenient excuse for the Obama Regime and compliant Democrats - and some Republicans - to grab power and money. Some of you, Americans, are ready to take to the streets. Some of you get it, and you don't like it. Some of you will attend Tea Parties around the country to voice your opposition to unprecented corruption, unapologetic steps toward socialism, and the crushing debt being imposed on your children and their children and their children's children. Shameful. But there is hope...

Krauthammer Nails Geithner, Dodd, Obama on AIG
Charles Krauthammer wrote a must-read column for tomorrow's Washington Post (dated March 20, 2009). Krauthammer hit the nail on the head (get it?) when he mocks Obama's Regime of Stupidity. What makes it all the more powerful is that the column is so damned accurate. He starts of with this:
A $14 trillion economy hangs by a thread composed of (a) a comically cynical, pitchfork-wielding Congress, (b) a hopelessly understaffed, stumbling Obama administration, and (c) $165 million.
In case you've been hiding under your bed for the past week, that $165 million is a reference to the controversial bonus money paid out to AIG executives. Krauthammer continues:
AIG debt manipulators who may be the only ones who know how to defuse the bomb they themselves built. Now, in the scheme of things, $165 million is a rounding error. It amounts to less than 1/18,500 of the $3.1 trillion federal budget. It's less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the bailout money given to AIG alone. If Bill Gates were to pay these AIG bonuses every year for the next 100 years, he'd still be left with more than half his personal fortune.
To watch Barney Frank chair his kangaroo court of a committee as it grilled AIG's CEO Edward Liddy is to watch an overproduced, melodramatic slight of hand by the worst bunch of magicians to ever attempt to pull rabbits out of hats in the history of Washington, DC. Liddy, by the way, inherited the lousy contracts that allowed the huge bonuses. Liddy himself got no bonus, and in fact he only get $1.00 (that's one dollar) per year for his task of cleaning up the AIG house. Liddy testified yesterday to Frank's kangaroo court that he is not financially vested in AIG in any way.
The Obama Regime approved the bonuses for AIG. In fact, Treasury demanded that they be allowed, for fear that not allowing them would ignite a firestorm of lawsuits. Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn) initially denied having anything to do with the allowance of the bonuses to stay in even as the government was about to give AIG about $180 Billion in bailout money. Dodd also denied that Treasury officials asked him to change the bailout legislation.
CNN, however, reports that "Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner confirmed Thursday that the department did talk to Sen. Chris Dodd about a clause he put forth in the stimulus legislation that would have strictly limited executive bonuses." Ah ha. So Dodd lied. Treasury, which is overseen by Obama appointee Geithner, urged that the AIG bonuses be allowed. So, does that mean Obama himself knew about the preservation of the bonuses? If not, does that mean that Obama doesn't know what's going on? Perhaps both.
Back to Krauthammer, who takes that into consideration and notes that Obama "too, has been out there trying to lead the mob" in calling for an investigation into the AIG bonuses and for the return of the bonus money. It's slight of hand, as I said. Obama & Company don't want you to know that the AIG bonuses were approved by Geithner, a top administration official. So by pretending to be outraged, Obama is hoping you'll be distracted from the fact that, well, he's really not outraged and undoubtedly knew that Geithner had urged the bonuses to be allowed.
"But it's a losing game," writes Krauthammer, "His own congressional Democrats will out-demagogue him and heap the blame on the hapless Timothy Geithner." Thank God for hapless flunkies like Tim Geithner. They're handy to have on hand when one needs a scapegoat.
Right now, Dodd is running for re-election in 2010. The news of his lies and deception about his role in the AIG bonus mess has not helped his polling. His Republican challenger is former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons. According to The Hartford Courant's Stan Simpson, Simmons is now ahead in early polling agains Dodd. Simpson notes this about Dodd in his March 19 column:
This latest story of [Dodd's] flip-flopping about his role in approving language to allow these shameless AIG bonuses may be the last straw for CT's senior senator. His election is in 2010. His credibility, when you factor in his deception and delay in forwarding info about his financial dealings with Countrywide, is near shot.
If only there could be another presidential election next year.

5,000 Attend Tea Party Cincinnati
Nationwide "Tea Parties" keep rolling on. Cincinnati had a big on on Saturday, March 14. Tea Parties are protests against the socialist regime of Barack Obama and the massive, piggish spending of your money, your children's money, and your grandchildren's money, bailing out failing companies, the exponential growth of Government, suppression of our constitutional rights, and so much more. Chicago had a Tea Party on February 27. Since then, the movement (and the anger) just keeps building. So far, 150 Tea Parties have either taken place or are scheduled. Oh, did I say anger? Yes I did. We're mad as hell.
The Tea Party in Cincinnati, Ohio was impressive. There are reports of over five thousand people attending and it appears those reports are accurate (police reports confirm). The rally was held in Fountain Square and the square and surrounding areas were packed to hear speakers and to vent at what people believe is wrong about the Pelosi, Obama, Reid administration. More taxes, more spending, bailouts and larger government. Full Post at Invincible Armor...

Stimulus Math Frightening
The total cost of the Obama Stimulus just for Illinois will be at least $3,108,484,657. That's the total of cost of all the projects submitted by Illinois... so far. How does that break down, what does it mean to YOU? No need for a calculator out, a commenter at Illinois Review did the math for us:
> 3.108 billion divided by 13 million [Illinois] residents is 239 per person. 956 for a family of 4.
> The 3 trillion of all the bailout/ stimulus/ porkulus/ obamu-us divided by 13 million is 230,000 per person, 920,000 for a family of 4.
> If the government borrows the money at 3% that is 27,600 interest cost per family of 4.
> 27,600 - 956 = 26,644 net loss per Illinois family.
