Carl Segvich's Tax Day Speech
Carl Segvich is a conservative candidate running for 11th District Cook County Commissioner. He gave this powerful speech at the Tax Day Tea Party on April 15, 2010. It's worth a replay! Learn more about Carl Segvich at his campaign website.
Recapping the Chicago Tax Day Tea Party
What a day for a patriotic rally in Chicago! Perfect weather and a magnificent setting in Daley Plaza, combined with dynamic speakers and an enthusiastic crowd made the April 15 Tax Day Tea Party a beautiful event.
Friend Anne Leary at Backyard Conservative put together a great post with photos, videos and many links about the rally. Anne's post "Chicago Tax Day Tea Party 2010 Pix and Video" is a must-read item. Also, check out the video of Kathy Barkulis' great speech. Friend John Ruberry of Marathon Pundit notes that the Tea Party Express has posted its candidate endorsements. Friend Amusing Bunni has a good post, too: "Report from the Trenches, Chicago Tax Day Tea Party."
Meanwhile: Does anybody remember the Coffee Party USA? Seems it's cooled down and nobody's offering a warm up for the tepid slop. In Wichita, Kansas, hundreds turned out for a Tea Party rally, while about 50 coffee dunkers lurked around the corner. The Wichita Eagle has a good report with amusing videos. In Boise, the Idaho Reporter tells us that "several dozen" coffee slurpers showed up to counter a Tea Party event at the state capitol. Police estimate 1,500 Tea Partiers at the Boise event, according to KBOI Channel 2.
Has anybody seen endorsements coming from the Coffee Party? For that matter, while candidates nationwide, from local offices to Congress, are begging for Tea Party support, how many candidates have you heard about that are courting Coffee Party USA endorsements? Sorry, Coffee Party USA, we've got you outnumbered and outflanked. Yours is a weak decaf brew.

It's Okay For Liberals To Do This
This liberal nutjob paraded hateful signs around Daley Plaza at the April 15 Tax Day Tea Party in Chicago. She pushed several signs on a cart and would flip them around every so often. Click images to enlarge them.
In the top photo, her sign urges "Peace, not Hate," but her clear implication is that the Tea Partiers are Nazis.
In the bottom photo, she shows off another sign with a picture of Glenn Beck with the word "Nazi" under it, a picture of Rush Limbaugh with the words "Drug Addick" underneath, and a picture of Sarah Palin over a freshly-shot moose over "Media Whore." A drawing inserted into "Tea Party" depicts patriots at puppets on strings.
The hypocrisy of liberals never ceases to amaze. Also see: "So Rep. Shuler Did Not Hear the Phantom ‘N-Word’ After All" at bigjournalism.com
Ballad of the Tea Party, Sung by Joel Pollak
Video Below: Joel Pollak is that nice young conservative guy who's running against the pernicious Democrat Jan Schakowsky for Congress in Illinois' 9th District. At yesterday's noon Tax Day Tea Party in Daley Plaza, Pollak took the stage with guitar in hand and wowed the crowd with his musical talent.
I had the great pleasure of standing next to him as we sang the National Anthem, and he hit every note perfectly. Not only does he have a strong voice for singing, Pollak would also be a strong voice for Illinois in Congress.

Aerial Photos of Chicago's Tax Day Tea Party!
APRIL 15, 2010 - CHICAGO - DALEY PLAZA - From 20 stories up, atop the First United Methodist Church across the street, a view of the Tax Day Tea Party in downtown Chicago. These photos were taken by me at 12:55 p.m.. My own estimate of the total crowd, from Noon until the end at 2:00 p.m., was over 3,000 people. WBBM 780 AM, a CBS owned-and-operated station, says the crowd was "about 1,000" people. Wrong. In the photos immediately below, I show a detail of this one. In the third photo down, I counted 140 people in a small area and marked them. Keep in mind that many of the attendees came over during their lunch breaks but left to go back to work. During the two hours of the official event, hundreds of people came and went. To count the static crowd at any point in time does not give an accurate number. Beware Chicago's Fake Tax Day Tea Party Event
THERE IS SOME CONFUSION in Chicago about two scheduled Tax Day Tea Party events. Both rallies will happen on Thursday, April 15 at Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington in downtown Chicago. One of the events is authentic, but the other is a rogue group that was kicked out of the Tea Party movement.
Here's the 411: THE REAL EVENT: 12:00 Noon on April 15 - This is the "real" event, sponsored by Tea Party Patriots Chicago (TPPC). See their impressive speakers list here. TPPC is a legitimate and authentic chapter of Illinois Tea Party Patriots (ITPP), which in turn is part of the nationwide Tea Party Patriots. Also see the Chicago chapter's Facebook page, and their Twitter page at http://twitter.com/landofdafree.

Wojtowicz was already causing ITPP headaches with her brash and threatening behavior, which sometimes rose to bizarre heights. She allegedly threatened to shoot a blogger, for example. The straw on the camel's back for ITPP was that ugly incident at the Lipinksi meeting.
Their tiny speakers list: WYLL’s radio personality and conservative Talk show host Sandy Rios of WYLL, 1160 AM. Underwhelming, right? But wait, there's more. Maybe. "In addition to Sandy Rios hosting a live broadcast, we will have a host of conservative speaker," promises their web site as late as 9:00 p.m. on April 12. Gee, I can't wait to see what kind of loony fringe conspiracy nutters Wojtowicz has conned into performing at her 3:00 p.m. sideshow.
If Wojtowicz wasn't so damaging to the Tea Party movement, it would be fun to laugh at her buffoonery. Sadly, however, she's one of those bad apples that the opposition loves to point at and say, "See?!? Look at how crazy those teabaggers are!" As I've said before, Wojtowicz and her fraudulent group deserve to be shunned by serious Tea Partiers. We owe it to ourselves to keep them as far away from us as possible.

THE ROGUE EVENT: 3:00 PM on April 15 - This is the rogue group, headed by the infamous Catherina Wojtowicz (photo). She is "Catherina6429" on Twitter, and is recommended reading or anyone who enjoys badly written crazy tweets.
Wojtowicz heads a group called "Chicago Tea Patriots," which was once part of the Illinois Tea Party Patriots, but the group was excommunicated for bad (very bad) behavior. Here's a brief account:
The ugliness and mob mentality of the Tea Party movement was on full display last week, during a town meeting held by Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) on Nov. 14 [2009]. What happened? A mob of teabaggers, blinded by hate and anger laughed at and heckled a grieving couple, who lost both their daughter-in-law and unborn grandchild. (Source: chattabox.com)
I don't like the term "teabaggers," but perhaps we can forgive the author the vile term this once for using it to describe vile people engaged in vile behavior.

Anarchists Plan Disruption of Tea Parties on April 15
The lunatics will be out on April 15, 2010. No, Mister and Mizz Liberal Amerika, I am not referring to the Tea Party people. Rather, I am referring to the leftist, "libertarian socialist" crazies, a.k.a. anarchists, who are calling for the disruption of the nationwide Tax Day Tea Party. A post at Infoshop News, "anarchist news, opinion and much more," dated March 31, 2010 is calling for devotees of the web site to make trouble at a tea party near them. Here's the first salvo of that post:
On April 15th thousands of right-wingers will attend rallies in cities and towns across the United States. The organizers of this nationwide day of protest call it a tea party. This tea party movement that emerged only a year ago is a coalition of conservatives, anti-Semites, fascists, libertarians, racists, constitutionalists, militia men, gun freaks, homophobes, Ron Paul supporters, Alex Jones conspiracy types and American flag wavers. Source: http://news.infoshop.org/article.php?story=crash-tea-parties
Matthew Vadum wrote about this at newsrealblog.com on March 31, 2010. In his story about MoveOn's planned protest at the headquaters of the Republican National Committee on April 1, 2010, he noted the hypocritical way that the Left is responding to what they see, in a hallucinatory manner, as the "hate" coming from conservatives, especially Tea Party adherents:

Apparently, somebody near the empty pizza box strewn Infoshop News office is making a good living selling tinfoil headwear to these nutters. They can't even see the irony of their own rant: They inaccurately paint participants of the Tea Party movement as some kind of conspiracy nut, all the while not realizing that this is, in itself, a weird kind of conspiracy theory.
"We think we are the doctors. We are the disease." ~ Alexander Hertzen, 1812 - 1870; Russian anarchistSome of you are too young to remember the years of street violence carried out by Leftists, especially in the 1960s and early 1970s. Many called themselves "peaceniks," others preferred "hippies." They had no hesitation in throwing bricks through the windows of small businesses and threatening university administrators. Some threatened the lives of cops and even bombed buildings. Some, like William Ayers and his wife, joined the SDS's violent splinter group, the Weathermen, and later became close friends with Comrade Barack Obama. The Violent Left calmed down for the most part after Nixon left office in late 1974. It is not altogether strange that they should be resurging under Comrade Obama. Remember that they were at the peak of their violence during the administration of Lyndon Johnson, a Democrat.

It is an indisputable fact that the violence America is beginning to see is almost exclusively on the left, whether it’s a deranged registered Democrat flying his plane into a federal building in Austin, Texas, or a progressive coward calling in a death threat against a Republican lawmaker. It is all part of the left’s push to delegitimize opposition to the socialist takeover of America. If you oppose the murder-in-progress of the American republic you are smeared as a redneck, teabagging, racist obstacle to progress — and you deserve what’s coming to you. So it’s not surprising that the street theater specialists at MoveOn.org are planning to host a propaganda event tomorrow [April 1] intended to reinforce this false notion that Constitution-loving pro-limited government enthusiasts are eeeevil haters. Full article here...
Okay, let's get back to the crazy anarchist post at Infoshop News. The loonie paranoia is repeated in the second paragraph (emphasis added):
This tea party movement that emerged only a year ago is a coalition of conservatives, anti-Semites, fascists, libertarians, racists, constitutionalists, militia men, gun freaks, homophobes, Ron Paul supporters, Alex Jones conspiracy types and American flag wavers.
They find the items highlighted items above to be objectionable? The rest of the items I can understand. I mean, I have nothing against gun owners, for example, but I can agree on someone with a freakish gun fetish. But "conservatives," "libertarians," "constitutionalists" and "American flag wavers" are bad people in the opinion of Infoshop News? If I run into any of these freaks on April 15 (and I'll be looking for them), I plan to ask them how their mothers traumatized them as small children and whether or not they are currently in any kind of psychotherapy.
The Infoshop News folks list their "three options we have with the tea party movement." The first one is the most worrisome. (Again, emphasis is added):
1. Organize counter-protests against the tea party demonstrations, same time, same place. This is probably the best option. We need to get in the streets on April 15th and show the tea party movement that there are lots of people out there who oppose their agenda.
My Comment:
2. Get individual tea party protesters to leave the right-wing and move to the left politically. That would involve passing out stuff like this at the tea party demonstrations: http://www.anarchist-studies.org/node/299
3. Ignore the tea party movement. This is the worst option because without anyone opposing them they could easily gain power.

Scranton PA Tea Party Photos!
Our friends in Scranton, Pennsylvania put together 37 photos of their Tax Day Tea Party. Frank Scavo created a nice slide show with photos by Bob Folger. He summarized the event in his e-mail (his P.S. is a hoot):
What an event we had yesterday in Scranton, and also Nationwide! Quite a simple movement and ideas, which I share here:
1. Stop the out of control government spending! It will consume 86% of GDP, which is all products and services produced and sold in these United States by 2019.
2. Stop the generational theft! Our children will pay 66 cents out of every dollar they earn to pay for todays spending. That is truly "Taxation without representation" for our children and cannot be allowed to stand!
3. Stop the government expansion of power to the unelected, such as Tim Geitner and the Treasury Department. Thomas Jefferson warned "Banking industries are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies!"
4. Stop the Stimulus spending! The Obama administration is selling the report that for every dollar spent, we get $1.35 back, hence the stimulus effect. The truth is, only 83 cents is returned for every dollar spent, a net loss of 52 cents. If $787 billion is the answer, why stop spening there? And why did the $387 billion TARP Bank bailout Bush spent have no effect on our tanking economy?! This stimulus did not work in Japan nor during the "Great Depression,", hence the so named historical event.
5. Stop lisitng those of us that want good government on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) watch list as suspiciuos and possible domestic terrorists. This includes average Americans and returning veterans. Chilling developments here in these United States!! Another unelected official, Janet Napolitano's anti free speech, anti American idea.
6. Stay tuned!! - THERE WILL BE ANOTHER RALLY AROUND THE 4TH OF JULY!!
There are many more reasons to get involved, but economic freedom is the common ground all Americans share. And I thank Laureen Cummings and Katye Dalgacio for organizing the event, and to Bob Folger for taking the pictures.
Frank Scavo
Committed American
P.S. Department of Homeland Security was at the rally in Scranton. No doubt we all made the watch list! I am glad to be in such company with all of you "Great Americans"!

Obama's Tax Day Bullshit
First Liar Barack Obama presented an astoundingly insincere message about taxes, just in time for the annual raping of the American taxpayer: April 15. It was an obvious attempt to take the wind out of the sails of anti-tax Tea Parties happening today in hundreds of U.S. cities. Obama misses the point of the Tea Parties. They're not asking for a "simpler tax code," although they would not object to that: Rather, they are asking for lower taxes, more responsible spending of tax revenues, and more transparency in the way those tax revenues are spent.
So, today, Obama is claiming that he has lowered taxes. This is a little bit like Josef Stalin proclaiming that all was well in the Ukraine in 1930. As Heritage analyst Brian Riedl has pointed out, given that Obama has already helped quadruple the deficit with his stimulus package, pledging to halve it by 2013 is hardly ambitious. The only way to reduce that deficit, ultimately, is by the inevitable and unavoidable raising of taxes.
AP reports today:
President Barack Obama declared on tax-filing day that he aims to take the dread out of deadline day. Obama said at a White House event Wednesday that he's working toward "a simpler tax code that rewards work and the pursuit of the American dream." Full Article...
The idea of a simpler tax code is not new. The "flat tax," for example, is decades old. Under a flat tax, everybody would be taxed equally at the same percentage of their income. Simple. AP reports that Obama also said:
"For too long, we've seen taxes used as a wedge to scare people into supporting policies that increased the burden on working people instead of helping them live their dreams.... That has to change, and that's the work that we've begun."
Bullshit. Are we really supposed to believe that the Trillions of dollars of debt that Obama is laying on you, your children and their grandchildren is part of "the work that we've begun?"
In today's White House press release (April 15), the word "lower" does not appear even once. The word "reduce" appears three times in the press release (as "reduce," "reduces" and "reduced"). Here are two of those:
Increased Earned Income Tax Credit. The Recovery Act includes two improvements to the EITC. It increases the credit for families with 3 or more children to 45% by more than $500, helping to reward work and reduce poverty. And it reduces EITC-related marriage penalties by as much as $400. Overall, 6.3 million low-income families with 12.7 million children will benefit from these two changes
More bullshit. An increase of "more tha $500" over a year will not help "to reward work" or to "reduce poverty" in any meaningful way. Spread $500 over a year (52 weeks) and that's $9.62 per week. Further divide that by the "3 or more children" and you've got a whopping $3.20 per child per week. Is that really "helping to reward work" or "reduce poverty?"
The third occurence of "reduce" is here, again with emphasis added:
..... Child Tax Credit Expansion. Thanks to the Recovery Act, the Child Tax Credit will now increase tax funds for more than 11 million low-income earners by increasing the refundability of the credit. Before the Act, working families with less than $12,550 were set to be excluded from the credit. The Act reduced this eligibility floor to $3,000, increasing tax refunds for million [sic] of low-income working families with children. This increase in eligibility will put almost $18 billion into the pockets of families most likely to spend the money and stimulate the economy.
Even more bullshit. What is a "tax refund?" It's the return of some of the money that the federal government (and some state governments) grabbed out of every one of your paychecks for a year. They deign to give some of it back, never all of it. You'll notice that in the paragraph about the Child Tax Credit Expansion and the Recovery Act, the actual amount of the "refunds for million [sic] of low-income working families with children" is not stated. You should realize that, again, the refund is the return of part of the money taken from thos low-income families.
Nowhere in today's White Press Release is it said that an across-the-board reduction in the average American's taxes is proposed. Taxes on "the rich" will be raised, that you can count on, and this will harm the very low-income families that Obama claims to be helping. How? Simple: Impose higher taxes on a business owner, for example, and the business owner will simply pass that on to his customers, whether those customers are buying a new car or a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of soda pop. And while it's out of the hands of the federal government, the additional burden of local, county and state income and sales taxes only contributes to that. This is brilliantly and passionately explained in a short video by James David Manning, PhD who tells us how, when Obama taxes the rich, the rich will tax the poor. (See: "Economics 101 for Poor Folk")
Meanwhile, Obama shills such as the AFL-CIO are helping him to attack the Tea Parties. The AFL-CIO's blog has this today:
Have you heard about the so-called “tea parties” happening today? Honchos of the extremist right are orchestrating top-down events to protest paying taxes for a proposed federal budget that’s designed to stimulate the nation’s flattened economy and support basic infrastructure and public services. Ironies abound in these protests: In some areas, protestors are urged to take public transportation to the events. Key word here is “public,” as in paid for by taxpayers.
I wonder if the wealthy union bosses realize how many of their own rank and file are marching in those Tea Parties? The attempt to ridicule the Tea Partiers' use of public transportation is obfuscation. None of the tax protesters would advocate zero taxes. Well, maybe one tenth of one percent would, but we all understand that some taxation is needed. The AFL-CIO bosses and Barack Obama and the rest of the Left are busy today poo-pooing the Tea Parties. They will pretend that they are silly and inconsequential, and that the participants are a bunch of greedy rich people whining about taxation. The left-leaning Gallup Poll tells us when we should all be thanking God for the privelege of paying taxes.
Don't buy it. Look at the videos, the news coverage, the photographs of Tea Parties today and from February. As you do, ask yourself: Do those people look rich? Do they seem like crazy, wild-eyed fascists? Or are they average Americans? Then ask youself how much money Barack Obama is worth, what the average salary of the top union bosses is, and whether or not they all look for legal tax loopholes.
Finally, ask yourself why Barack Obama, the Left, and their shills are so eager to pretend that the Tea Parties are insignificant, yet they are spending enormous amounts of time, effort and press releases to combat the message of the Tea Parties. Perhaps Obama doesn't really miss the point of the Tea Parties after all. Perhaps, instead, he is scared to death of the rapidly growing movement, and of the yet-to-be-realized potential it has. Obama and his people, and to be fair a number of Republicans as well, understand that the Tea Party movement of today could easily be transformed into America's first viable "third" political party.

Are Tea Parties Working? (UPDATED)
UPDATE, 10-31-2009: Things have changed since I wrote this in April, 2009. The Tea Parties have shown that they can directly and profoundly affect local and national politics. Bring in supporting factors like Glenn Beck, Michelle Malkin and others and the Tea Party "movement" is quickly coming into its own, finally beginning to gel into something cohesive.
Bill Hennessy sums this up well in his October 31, 2009 column at Big Government, titled "New York 23: When a Nation Calls." It's a must-read. Be sure to also see "Washington Post: ACORN Video Creates New Conservative Star."
*** original post below ***
Depends on what you mean by "working." The nationwide "tea parties," which are protests against wasteful spending by the government, especially within the "stimulus" legislation, are certainly working in terms of getting a lot of armchair warriors to sign online petitions and to mail tea bags to their representatives.
But let's be clear about this: I support the Tea Party movement, but I see flaws in it. The purpose of the tea party protests is not merely to get online signatures and to overload congressional mailboxes with tea, for those tactics and methods must produce actual results. That is, the marching, the online ranting, the digital signatures, the tea bags need to cause action on the part of the government.
So far, it's shown no real sign of having any real effect. Legislators, from aldermen to congressmen, are not feeling any pressure. In fact, most are either ignoring the tea parties or just plain laughing at them. Indeed, there are many now who are Attacking The Tea Party Movement.
The Economist noted, on April 9, that "No one thinks this stuff is effective. And yet conservatives are gearing up next week for a series of disaggregated 'Tea Parties' modeled on the Boston Tea Party of 1773."
Chicago News Bench wrote about it on April 10, in which we said that the tea party organizers need to rethink their tactics and "get serious" about staging real protests.
NetRightNation has an interesting post about this today (emphasis added):
Just as conservatives once mocked the online wave that helped Barack Obama surf into the White House, liberals are now heaping scorn on the tea party movement. This Web phenomenon may bring tens of thousands of small-government conservatives to tax day rallies across the country Wednesday. They Twitter. They Facebook. They blog. They mail tea bags to Congress. It’s an outgrowth of the tax-revolt movement that has been simmering on the libertarian right for years. But the idea got new life as conservatives, upset at the scope of the Obama agenda, passed around online a clip of CNBC personality Rick Santelli railing against the president’s mortgage bailout. Full Post...
The Tea Party organizers are missing some huge opportunities here. Rather than protesting the "stimulus" and "porkulus" and wasteful government spending (which they cannot and will not slow down or stop), "the movement" should be screaming about the march to totalitarianism that Obama is leading along. The higher taxes are part of that, but a small part. Worse are the threats to free speech (a proposed resurrection of the "Fairness Doctrine" and the "Smart Grid" and cyberlaws), threats to freedom (the GIVE Act/HR 1388), and so much more. These are the bigger, more urgent issues.
Taxes can easily be reduced. Over time, taxes go up, then down, then back up, then back down. Once the government takes away our liberties, however, they are rarely given back to the people.
There are major differences between the Obama Internet Campaign and the current Tea Party Internet Campaign. The Obama people were unified. They followed a single guiding entity - the Obama campaign group. They issued marching orders and followers followed, often from one state to another to hand out literature and ring doorbells. Obama's army was working for a single, easy-to-understand goal: The election of Barack Obama.
The tea parties, on the other hand, are much less unified and have no easily defined goal. Many local tea party organizers , in hundreds of cities across America, look to the "Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party (NTDTP)." The name is unfortunate; what happens after April 15? Well, you could click on a link at NTDTP's website (way down at the bottom of the page) to the "Tea Party Revolution," a separate group. There, they tell you that the movement will continue after April 15, but they give no real direction the troops. You'll also find a link at NTDTP's website to "ReTeaParty," which calls itself "Rick Santelli's Tea Party."
Until recently, the two groups virtually ignored each other. You'll still find events listed at ReTeaParty that are not listed at Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party's site, and vice versa. Meanwhile, there are other, smaller groups out there that are not well coordinated with each other or with any central guiding authority.
In fact, while NTDTP is by far the largest organization in terms of membership and publicity, there is nothing official about them. The Obama campaign, on the other hand, was official and was looked to by every Obama supporter for guidance. As big as NTDTP has become (and the deserve much praise for their phenomenol growth), there is nothing official about them.
I don't want to make too big a deal out of the "non-official" reality of NTDTP, however. It's a problem at the moment only because it causes confusion for people searching for tea party information. If there was one, authoritative, central website to go to it would strengthen the ability to get information out rapidly.
The operators of ReTeaParty and other tea party-oriented websites, such as DontGo and SurgeUSA, should shut down their sites and put redirects on them so that people who click to their links automatically go to NTDTP's site, which has, by default, become the primary source for tea party information. If the DontGo and SurgeUSA and other sites truly care about "the movement," they will put ego aside for the sake of the very movement they say they support.
That "information," however, presents another challenge. Obama's campaign was simple with a simple goal: Elect Obama. The goal for the Tea Party Movement is much more complicated. The NTDTP's website does not really explain their goals. On their "About" page, we see the following, which gives the reader no direction and only wondering what the exact goal of "the movement" really is (emphasis added):
The Tea Party protests....set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress. Specifically, the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget. [Rick Santelli] called for a “Chicago Tea Party” where advocates of the free-market system could join in a protest against out of control government spending. A few days later, grassroots activists and average Joe Americans began organizing what would soon become the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party effort. On February 27th, an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the street in 40+ cities accross the country in the first nationwide “Tea Party” protest.
NOTE: The first nationwide Tea Party protests occured on February 27, although there were independent protests happening before then. As recently as ten days ago, a woman wrote to me to ask how she could organize a tea party in her state. I referred her to the Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party website, but can you imagine an Obama organizer a year ago wondering where she could find information about organizing a rally? She would have gone straight to the Obama campaign's website.
NTDTP's "About" page, continued:
Organizers of the February 27th events pledged to continue on with an even bigger and better protest to follow the first. With April 15th being “Tax Day”, it was decided to schedule the second round of Tea Party protests to ride alongside the tax deadline. And with that, the “Tax Day Tea Party”, the second round of the Nationwide Tea Party protests, moved into reality.
Okay, nice. But what does it all mean? Exposing "the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress" is fine, but would somebody please tell me how the tea parties are doing this? That is, after many years of talk radio and bloggers and Fox News "exposing" the "liberal agenda" etc., what is the Tea Party Movement doing to further it? Theyr'e preaching to the choir. As for "exposing" the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget," ditto.
More importantly, what action is "the movement" achieving? Online signatures? Tea bags sent to Congress? The federal pork continues to sizzle. The "stimulus" bills keep piling up. Obama's youth corps is strapping up its boots. Congress is considering a bill that would allow Obama to shut down the Internet. The march to totalitarianism steps forward unimpeded, and all the Facebook groups and online rants and polite lunch hour marches will - not - accomplish - anything.
I'll repeat what I wrote on April 10:
If Thomas Jeffereson, Ben Franklin, Sam Adams and the rest of our Founders had settled for the mild-mannered tactics of today's "Tea Parties," we would still be paying taxes to the British Crown....Either you're serious about a protest, or you're not. Either you're serious about a "movement," or you're not. Cute and clever marketing campaigns are well and good, but only if they can inspire boots-on-the-ground, physical action against Authority.
The Tea Party movement should continue, despite its flaws. It will, of course. It is, after all, still a very new phenomenon and with time it will inevitably evolve. One can only hope that it will evolve into a truly viable movement that demands results (not merely asks for them), has a solid plan of action that includes both tactics and long term strategy, and focuses more on the real threats to America rather than allowing itself to be distracted by tax rates. I'm certainly with them on the tax rates, but as I noted above, there are more urgent things to protest.
Daniel Ruwe stated it well in his April 9 post on TheNextRight.com:
The Tea Party demonstrations are not without value. They inspire the base, and can serve as a first step into the world of conservative grassroots. And they do inspire media coverage, much of it positive. But protests are no substitute for ideas and organization. The Tea Parties can be an effective gimmick—but they are only a gimmick. They should play only a very secondary role in the conservative arsenal.
