June 5, 2014 -- Parts of Moncton, New Brunswick were locked down following the shooting deaths on Wednesday night of three Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the wounding of two other officers, reports the CBC.
Police were searching for gunman Justin Bourque, 24, armed and dangerous. Police tweeted a photo of him wearing military camouflage and carrying guns (left).
UPDATE: Bourque surrendered to police at early on the morning of Friday, just after midnight. The Daily Mail (UK) reports that Bourque gave himself up in the front yard of Moncton resident Michelle Thibodeau. "He was in my backyard. I saw him arrested in front of my eyes. He is alive," Thibodeau tweeted. "The swat team arrived at my house and unloaded and started screaming in my backyard for him to surrender and he did. I watched it happen," according the the Daily Mail. "They had him sprawled on my front lawn for some time and then loaded him into the swat vehicle. They are now checking my yard for firearms."
While Bourque was still at large, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police asked residents to stay inside and lock their doors, turn on porch lights to assist police, and to not broadcast police operations over social media such as Twitter or Facebook. Moncton has a population of just over 60,000.

Barbour and her husband Elytte, 22, both face the death penalty for fatally stabbing 42-year old married man Troy LaFerrara on Nov. 11. "Miranda lured the lonely 42-year-old with a Craigslist ad offering 'companionship'," says NY Daily News, "and the two met in the parking lot of a shopping mall before driving to a spot in Sunbury, authorities said." Miranda Barbour was 18 when she and Elytte were arrested for the murder of LaFerrara in December, 2013.
"Miranda Barbour...told police that Troy LaFerrara....was still alive - 'choking and gasping for air' - after she stabbed him 20 times,"reported the Daily Mail last December. "Initially, Miranda told police that she killed La Ferrara in self-defense after he started to grope her. But her 22-year-old husband Elytte Barbour gave police a different story, saying they conspired to kill a stranger together, and he helped hold La Ferrara down while his wife wielded the knife."
"Police allege in court papers that Elytte Barbour told investigators they committed the crime because they wanted to kill someone together," according to an AP report. "Miranda Barbour said in [an] interview that she doesn't want to get out of jail and that she would kill again if she were released. She said she had no remorse and only killed 'bad people'."

October 27, 2013 - Horror in New York, on Saturday night: A mother and four children were stabbed to death in an apartment on 57th Street near Ninth Avenue. A machete and scissors were taken from the apartment by police as evidence. "A crazed man turned a Sunset Park, Brooklyn, home into a slaughterhouse late Saturday, leaving a 37-year-old mom and her four young children stabbed to death," reports the New York Post. "A 25-year-old suspect - preliminarily identified as the children’s mentally troubled older cousin - was arrested after being subdued at the scene, his feet bare and soaked in blood."
"The toddler and two girls....were already dead from their wounds when paramedics arrived just after 11 p.m.," reports New York Daily News. The mother and [a] boy were taken to local hospitals, "but doctors were unable to save them, officials said."
Police released the five victims' names on Sunday: 37-year-old Qiao Zhen Li and her children, 9-year-old Linda Zhuo, 7-year-old Amy Zhuo, 5-year-old Kevin Zhuo, and 1-year-old William Zhuo.
Nobody has yet called for a national discussion about knife or blade control. There have been no calls in the past for tighter controls on how the mentally ill obtain sharp objects such as steak knives, machetes, ice picks and other potentially dangerous non-guns things.
Update, October 22, 2013 - Bat-beating trial jurors hear defendant's jailhouse recordings - Suspect in Bucktown attack says in phone conversation he needed money for drugs, reports the Chicago Trib. Update, July 10, 2013 - Three years ago, we called Marcy Cruz a "rabid dog." Yesterday, she pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder for her part in a brutal attack in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood on April 23, 2010.
Cruz, 28, is one of two people accused of the 2010 baseball bat attack in Bucktown, in the 1800 block of North Damen Avenue. Cruz pleaded guilty on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 and will testify against her co-defendant," reports ABC-7 Chicago.
The two counts of the attempted murder against Cruz are for part in the attack on Stacy Jurich, then 24, and Natasha McShane, then 23.
Cruz's sentence is a mere 11 years in prison for each count, and to add insult to injury her sentences will be served consecutively. Cruz must serve at least 85 percent before being eligible for parole, reports ABC-7.
11 years is not nearly long enough in our opinion, but at least this dangerous b*tch will be off the streets for a decade or more. We can only hope that she gets the living hell beaten out of her while in prison, just badly enough that when she's released she will be in a vegetative condition. In an ideal world, her sentence would have been longer, but in a plea deal she agreed to testify against co-defendant and fellow scumbag Heriberto Viramontes, 34. Viramontes has felony convictions for burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle, and about 30 other arrests on his record, reports CBS-2 Chicago. His trial is scheduled for September 9, 2013.

Two women, Natasha McShane, 23 and Stacy Jurich, 24, were brutally beaten with a baseball bat Friday, April 23 at about 3:00 a.m. They were walking in the 1800 block of N. Damen Avenue. Both victims were struck in the head with a wooden bat. McShane is still in a medically-induced coma and in critical condition. She is a UIC grad student from Northern Ireland who came to Chicago four months. Stacy Jurich, 24 was released from the hospital last week. Two suspects were quickly arrested by Chicago Police: Heriberto Viramontes and Marcy Cruz, boyfriend and girlfriend. Viramontes, say the police, swung the bat into the skulls of the two young women. Marcy Cruz, it is said, stayed in their van smoking dope while her man Heriberto went hunting for purses. Chicago police say they were able to find the two by tracking cell phones and credit cards stolen from the victims. ABC7 Chicago reported that "A follow-up investigation also reportedly included surveillance video recorded as the credit cards were being used. Police said they found other items belonging to McShane and Jurich when they searched the suspect's homes. Officials said they also have the bat."
Irish Central reports that Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said, "Cruz pointed out the potential victims to Viramontes after he told her he needed 'quick money for drugs.' Cruz told police that she 'smoked a blunt' of marijuana before the attack took place." When Cruz spotted Natasha McShane and Stacy Jurich, she said to Heriberto Viramontes, "look at all those drunk assholes coming out of the bar." Police also said they tracked down the suspects after they used cell phones and credit cards stolen during the attack.
Now, Marcy's father wants us to pity her.Chicagoist notes that "the father of Marcy Cruz, the female half of the couple being held in the late-April bat beating of two women in Bucktown, has come to her defense, saying Cruz is mentally ill and was off her prescribed medication. Saying that his daughter is bipolar, Edwin Cruz put a lot of the blame on Heriberto Viramontes, the man accused of wielding the bats in the attack: 'This guy, well, he was a manipulator. He's good with ladies, he's got sweet talk, he's got green eyes, he's pretty boy.' Both Cruz and Viramontes have been charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery for the attacks. 'It's very sad. It hurts all of us,' said Edwin. '(But) I don't think she should be (incarcerated). … She's not all there in her mind.'"

Edwin Cruz wants us to believe, apparently, that all bi-polar people who stop taking their meds lurk in vans waiting for the right victims to pulverize and rob. Cruz claims his "mentally ill" daughter is really a sweet kid, and blames the bad boyfriend Viramontes. He seems in denial about the fact that his lovely daughter was hanging out with a vile scumbag, with an arrest as long as, well, a baseball bat.
According to NBC5 Chicago, "His rap sheet includes convictions for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, burglary and domestic battery, Cook County court records show. He also has a conviction for possession of a controlled substance, police said. His current stay in the jail is his 19th time in the facility."
Cruz the father claims that daughter Marcy did the bidding of Viramontes because he's "good with the ladies." Yeah, especially while he's swinging a baseball bat. Most "ladies," by the way, do not hang out and do the bidding of guys who behave as Viramontes allegedly did. Perhaps Daddy Cruz is unaware of the fact that his daughter is something of a looker herself, leaving open the possibility that Viramontes was actually the one acting under sexual influence. Is it not possible that Marcy Cruz was the "manipulator?"

Papa Cruz says his daughter should not be behind bars because "she's not all there in her mind." Perhaps he's unaware of the fact that there are plenty of people who are "criminally insane." The fact that she might be crazy does not change the fact that she is a danger to other people.
Let's say you're walking down the street, and you're lucky enough to be carrying a gun. You turn a corner and find yourself confronted by a growling dog, foam oozing from its mouth, a crazed look in its eyes. You realize the dog is rabid, out of its mind. You back off and try to get away, but the dog starts running toward you.
You have a split-second decision to make.Do you (a) draw your gun and shoot the insane beast before it kills you or infects you with rabies, and perhaps other people too, or (b) show compassion and pity for the poor thing because you know it is not in control of its own actions due to the rabies.
The second choice, of course, might be fatal. You shoot the rabid dog, and you are not required to show remorse for having done so. It was self defense, and the dog no longer poses a threat to anybody else.

"News of the 10-year-old's death was all over Twitter yesterday, but "later on Monday the Kandahar provincial government office confirmed that a second boy had also been beheaded," says BBC News today. Many reports are saying that the Taliban killed the boys, but they deny responsibility for the murders. Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi "insisted to the BBC the group had not beheaded any children in the area."
Kandahar's governor, Dr. Toryalay Wessa, condemned the killings as inhumane and un-Islamic and insists the Taliban is guilty of killing the boy. A manhunt for the killers has been ordered.
"The boys were on their way back ... when they were stopped by Taliban insurgents who beheaded them," the chief of Zhari district, Jamal Agha, told Reuters. "Both of them were innocent children and had nothing to do with government or foreigners."
Were They Looking for Food?
There is media confusion over the motivation behind the killing of the two boys. Many reports say the boys were killed while seeking food, but at least one report says that the boys may have actually been selling food.
The Kandahar provincial government office issued a statement last night that said the boys were probably suspected by the Taliban of giving information to police in exchange for food,says The Telegraph. "In separate incident, it was claimed, the boys were questioned about spying and their heads were then cut off." A Reuters report at Gulf News says that Khan and Hameedullah "had traveled to Afghan army and police checkpoints near their home in the southern province of Kandahar, scrounging for leftover food to bring to their families, the officials said."
Which is it? Were the boys scrounging for food or given food in exchange for information?
Or Were They Selling Yogurt? However, a very different report from Voice of Journalists (VOJ) says that the boys may have been killed "because they sold yogurt to Afghan Police and Army personnel. The boys were warned that they should not have any business dealings with any Afghan official. However, today when the boys were coming back after selling their 'Lassi', a yogurt-based drink, they were captured and then ruthlessly beheaded."

A spokesperson of Kandaha governor said that the boys had a flock of sheep and goats, reports VOJ. "They would create lassi out of yogurt and then swap this drink with Afghan Police and Army to get some food in return. For this reason, they were warned by the Taliban. They were asked not to conduct any business with Afghan Police or help them in any matter."
The Telegraph also notes that "Afghans officials believe the Taliban carried out the executions as a 'warning' to other youngsters not to co-operate with the Coalition forces at a time when they are launching fresh attacks in Afghan cities on Western and Afghan forces as part of their Spring offensive which has so far seen a series of high profile attacks."
June 8, 2013 (1:00 AM CDT) - By Santa Monica standards, Friday was horrific. Five people were killed, including a crazed gunman, and five others wounded in Santa Monica, CA. One victim was hospitalized in critical condition. By Chicago standards, that's a quiet weekend. At 4:40 PM on Saturday, I am listening to the Chicago PD scanner frequencies and hearing numerous reports of "man with a gun," "shots fired" and other mayhem. At least 13 people shot citywide mid-way through the weekend in Chicago (details at the Chicago Tribune). Keep in mind that in addition to people being shot, there are others being knifed, beaten with fists and blunt instruments, raped and robbed.
While all that is happening, the national news media is obsessing on Friday's shootings in Santa Monica. Battlefield Chicago is more violent, but it is being overlooked.
The Santa Monica killer, now dead, was a crazed individual with a semi-automatic rifle. His first two victims were his own brother and father. He fired at the house they were in, causing the house to catch fire. "As the house burst into flames, the man wounded a woman in a car before moving toward the campus, spraying bullets as he went. Police said he opened fire on a city bus, a police car and other vehicles, as well as bystanders and pedestrians," reports CBS News.

Update, 01:15 AM, June 8: Moments after we published this post, we learned that there was another shooting in Chicago shortly after midnight. Reports indicated two victims were shot, one in his head and one in his chest, on W. Lake Street at N. Central Park. At 1:49 AM, the Chicago Tribune posted a story online. (As of 3:15 AM on Monday morning, there were two dead plus another 16 wounded.) With that in mind, add two more to the headline below.

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg "when a white SUV approached and a person got out and shot him about 3:30 p.m., police said." The boy is thought to be a gang member "who was shouting gang slogans at the passing SUV, which contained rival gang members, a police source said."
"In the South Shore neighborhood, a teenage boy was shot in the arm about 1:50 p.m." and taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Say a prayer for the four dead and five wounded in Santa Monica. Please also pray for the thousands of Chicagoans, dead and wounded. Pray that Chicago makes it through another, predictably violent weekend.
May 30, 2013 - Half a dozen Chicago police vehicles and yellow crime scene tape indicated that something was wrong at the Diplomat Motel late this morning.
Police officers and their vehicles, some parked at crazy angles across the street from a Dominick's grocery story, guarded a quiet homicide scene at 5230 N. Lincoln Avenue.
"A 5-month-old baby boy was killed and his mother seriously wounded," reports the Chicago Tribune, quoting authorities, "in an apparent murder-suicide attempt at a motel on North Lincoln Avenue this morning."
May 15, 2013 - The nightmarish revelations about abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell's clinic, called a "house of horrors," shook up a lot of people. Gosnell was convicted of first degree murder earlier this week for the deaths of babies born at his Philadelphia clinic.
A lot of people on the Left dismiss the Gosnell case as an aberration. It's an unusual case, they say. They continue to shrug off the reality of the abortion holocaust. Whether or not an abortion clinic is "following the rules," the fact remains that unborn children are being slaughtered daily. Few on the Left think of abortion as murder; many don't consider an unborn person to be a person. But if were you put it to them this way, they might reconsider: Abortion is the biggest single killer of Black Americans. Bigger than the Ku Klux Klan, as we are reminded by Walter Hoye, founder and president of the Issues4Life Foundation.
Over 86 years, the Ku Klux Klan lynched 3,446 blacks – a figure matched in less than four days if tallying the number of black babies who are aborted.
Walter Hoye, founder and president of the Issues4Life Foundation, shared those statistics at a press conference on Tuesday where black clergy and other leaders gathered in response to the guilty verdict in the trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted of murdering three newborn babies.
“Right now to give some of us just a perspective of the impact of abortion on demand in the black community, according to the archives of the Tuskegee Institute, from 1882 to 1968 – 86 years – the Ku Klux Klan lynched 3,446 Negroes,” Hoye said. “While it took the Klan 86 years to accomplish this, abortion on demand in America accomplishes that is less than 4 days.”
Hoye's numbers are based on the Guttmacher Institute's fact sheet on induced abortion in the United States. That fact feet shows that in 2008, 2.1 million abortions were performed in the U.S. Of those, 432,000 of those abortions were performed on black women. Using those figures, in three days 3,550 black babies were aborted. In four days, the total would be 4,734 aborted black babies.
Hoye said that over 20 million of the more than 50 million abortions that have taken place since the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling legalized the procedure are performed on black women.
“Since 1973, abortion on demand in black America has taken more lives than homicides, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and HIV/AIDS combined and has become the No. 1 cause of death in the black community,” Hoye said. Full article...
May 14, 2013 - A Philadelphia abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, will not get the death penalty but will get two consecutive life terms instead.
Gosnell was convicted yesterday of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies who were delivered alive and then killed in his clinic.
"Gosnell gave up his appeal rights Tuesday, and prosecutors agreed to two life sentences without parole," reports Associated Press.

Prosecutors had asked for the death penalty because Gosnell committed multiple murders. "Gosnell is to be sentenced Wednesday in the death of the third baby," says AP, "an involuntary manslaughter conviction in the death of a patient and hundreds of lesser counts."
"Pennsylvania authorities failed to conduct routine inspections of all its abortion clinics for 15 years by the time Gosnell's facility was raided," reports ABC News. "In the scandal's aftermath, two top state health officials were fired, and Pennsylvania imposed tougher rules for clinics."
May 13, 2013 - Abortionist Kermit Gosnell was found guilty today of three counts of first-degree murder for killing babies born alive in his clinic. He was acquitted on a fourth count. Prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty, which Gosnell is eligible for under Pennsylvania law.

Jan. 21, 2013 - The predominantly liberal Mainstream Media is using the recent murders family membes by Nehemiah Griego as a way to attack homeschooling. New York Daily News's absurd headline today is "New Mexico homeschooled teen Nehemiah Griego accused of murdering family constantly wore camo: neighbors." 15-year old Griego fatally shot his parents and three siblings on Saturday, Jan. 19 in their home near Albuquerque.
Wow, sounds like those wacky homeschoolers are a bunch of dangerous nutjobs! Is the fact that Griego was homeschooled a legitimate part of this tragic story? Sure it is, in the same way that it's legitimate to report certain other personal information about him. But the way the NY Daily News headline portrays it, homeschooling was a major factor in the shooting. The NY Daily News headline is a deliberately misleading bit of anti-homeschooling propaganda from the Left, which prefers government-run public schools to allowing kids to be educated at home - outside of the ideological grip of the government.

The trend of killing unwanted baby girls is predominantly a "third world" issue, but the horror is not limited to those parts of the planet.

Dec. 14, 2012 - The horrific shooting today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut [map] left at least 28 dead, including the shooter. At least 20 of those killed were children. The shooter, 20-year old Adam Lanza. One of the adult victims was Nancy Lanza, the killer's own mother, who worked at the school. What could have been done to stop the shooter and save some lives? Before we continue, I'll just remind you that the police responded with guns. That's right, the cops had guns.
Here are some of the ineffective things that actually happened today:
Principal Dawn Hochsprung and the school psychologist leapt out of their seats and ran out of the room to help, Ms. Day, a therapist at the school said. "They didn't think twice about confronting or seeing what was going on," she said, reports The Wall Street Journal. Ms. Hochsprung was one of those killed in the attack.

All three left the room and went into the hall to see what was happening. The parent ducked under the table and called 911."
What should have happened: Somebody could have shot Adam Lanza, stopping him in his tracks. Unfortunately, it seems, nobody in the school was armed. Schools are known to law enforcement as being attractive targets for criminally insane people bent on killing. That fact makes it hard to understand why so few schools have armed guards to protect the children and staff.
The Attorney General of Texas, Greg Abbott says schools should have armed personnel. He told the Houston Chronicle today that "the common denominator for the school shootings in Aurora, Columbine and Virginia Tech is that we have a target-rich environment," and "You have a shooter that is completely free to go about his sick fantasy. We need to do what it takes to change that." He also told the Chronicle that, "Had there been [armed security guard and citizens] in Colorado, at Virginia Tech or now in Connecticut - someone that could have changed the dynamic and to do so by having a firearm - there would be fewer lives lost." Is Greg Abbot right?Ask the Israelis.

June 13, 2012 - The Federal Bureau of Investigation just released two new videos about a Virginia cold case. The FBI says that an "unknown offender" is linked by DNA in two separate cases, and they released this artist's composite sketch.
"On a Saturday night in October 2009," says the FBI website, "college student Morgan Harrington left a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and disappeared. It would be several months before her body was discovered in a field about 10 miles away."
Virginia State Police and City of Fairfax Police, Virginia are also investigating Harrington's unsolved murder. Metallica also released a video, below, in an effort to find the killer. Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington left early from a rock concert in Charlottesville, VA on October 17, 2009. She was last seen hitchhiking on a busy street outside of the concert arena. Special Agent Dino Cappuzzo of the Virginia State Police says in January the next year... Her body was found on a very large farm in a rural area of Ablemarle county about 10 miles south from where she was last seen.
DNA recovered in the Harrington case was linked to an unknown offender in a September 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City. A 26-year-old woman was attacked at night while walking home from a grocery store. The offender was scared away by a passerby—but the victim got a good look at him, enabling a Fairfax City Police artist to produce a sketch of the attacker.
“It was a remarkable break to get the DNA match,” said FBI Special Agent Jane Collins. The forensic evidence linked the two cases, so now we have a face to put with the suspect in the Harrington case. The suspect is described as an African-American male with black hair and facial hair (at the time of the 2005 attack). He is approximately 6 feet tall and was believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35 years old at the time of the Fairfax City assault.

September 3, 2010 - Four men were found shot in a garage in Chicago's south side Lawndale neighborhood last night. Three were dead when discovered; one died later in hospital. Today, the media is catching up to us on this story that we first broke last night at 8:55 p.m.
The Chicago Sun-Times says that "Police discovered four males inside a garage in the 6100 block of South Kildare Avenue about 8:30 p.m., said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro, citing preliminary information. Sources said all four were shot." ...Actually, the four dead men were first discovered by the wife of one of the victims. The police did not discover them. A police source told Chicago News Bench last night that the dead men were found by a woman in a residential garage - that woman is the wife of one of the slain men. The Sun-Times report did reveal, however, that one of the victims was still alive when the police arrived. He died later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Oddly, the Sun-Times made no mention of the fact that all four men have Spanish surnames and that Mexican drug cartel involvement is strongly suspected by the CPD (we did).

The Southtown Star reportsthat "Dead on the scene were Noel Casares, 25; Roberto Rivera, 30; and Alonzo Pena, who is believed to be in his 30s, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. A sister-in-law of one of Alonzo Pena is quoted by the Trib as saying, "As far as I know he wasn't involved with drugs." What does that mean? Nothing, of course. The Trib also noted that police say "multiple weapons" were found at the scene. Did the sister-in-law know about that? The Trib also paraphrased the sister-in-law as saying that "a good father who was around for family gatherings and barbecues where the children would play with cousins." (Again, meaningless. Tony Soprano could be described in the same way.)

Kildare Avenue (map), a residential neighborhood less than a mile east of Midway Airport. The bodies, all bound with duct tape, were discovered when the wife of one of the victims entered their garage. Hurricane Alex is currently pounding the U.S.-Mexican border. A much deadlier storm of sorts, however, has been ravaging Mexico and the U.S.-Mexico border for years - and shows no sign of clearing any time soon.
That storm is the rampant violence that has claimed thousands of lives in Mexico, one of the three North American nations in which violence - deadly violence - is a frequent part of the political landscape.
Like Hurricane Alex, that storm is spilling over the border into the U.S. "More people now die violently on our southern border,"reports the NY Post, "than in Somalia, Yemen or even Afghanistan."Gunfire killed Rodolfo Torre Cantu on Monday, June 28. He was the front-runner candidate for governor in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, running as the Institutional Revolutionary Party's (PRI) candidate. Torre died instantly when he and "at least four other people" were en route to a campaign event near the state capitol, reports the Financial Times, and Mexican authorities say that the murder "is the latest act of intimidation by Mexico's powerful drugs cartels." Tamaulipas is one of 11 Mexican states in which voters will vote in gubernatorial elections on Sunday, July 4.
There is little doubt that Torre's murder was the work of the cartels.Time Magazine says that "as Torre left the state capital to conclude his campaign, assailants showered his convoy with gunfire from automatic rifles and heavy-caliber weapons, killing him instantly. Army commanders said the attack bore all the signs of the Zetas, a paramilitary drug gang that was born in the state."Mexico's political system has long been deeply corrupt, from the cop on the street to the top level of the country's federal government. That system has also spawned frequent political violence. Because of the corruption, the Mexican government at all levels is inept. If Mexico had its act together, it would have made use of it's incredible beauty and natural resources long ago to become one of most prosperous nations in the world.
Instead, Mexico is a violent, corrupt, filthy basket case with civil war in its south and drug gangs running the show in many cities. Those gangs, the drug cartels such as the Zetas, have become very effective paramilitary organizations, operating with professionalism that is alarming. This frightening efficiency is detailed by Ted Galen Carpenter at The National Interest:
Two features of Torre's assassination on Monday are indicative of just how brazen and powerful the drug gangs have become. One is the status of the victim; Torre's death is the most high-profile assassination since the killing of presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio in 1994. The cartels thereby sent a message that no one, no matter how prominent, is beyond their reach.
The second alarming aspect is the professionalism of the hit. His car was ambushed on the road to the airport, with one attacking vehicle blocking in front and another closing off any retreat, thereby creating a perfect free-fire zone. Multiple gunmen then sent a hail of bullets into their helpless target, killing Torre and several aides and bodyguards.
Unfortunately, that technique increasingly characterizes cartel attacks on Mexican officials, police and even military personnel.This is not just a problem for Mexico, but also for its neighbors to the north. The drug cartel violence often spills over to the border states in the U.S. Imagine two houses. In one, the residents are constantly fighting, often violently, and sometimes the gunfire from within flies into the house next door. Now and then, some of the violent neighbors sneak into the house next door and do their illegal business there while completely ignoring requests to leave. Worse yet, the violent neighbors occasionally kidnap or kill some of their hapless neighbors. When the vicitms call on other neighbors for help, they are accused of being racists. Welcome to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
Despite the assassination of Torre, the Mexican government has said that the elections will be held as scheduled on Sunday, July 4.
According to the Homeland Security News Wire (March, 2009),"The biggest and most violent combatants are the Sinaloa cartel, known by U.S. and Mexican federal law enforcement officials as the 'Federation' or 'Golden Triangle,' and its main rival, 'Los Zetas' or the Gulf Cartel, whose territory runs along the Laredo,Texas, borderlands. The two cartels appear to be negotiating a truce or merger to defeat rivals and better withstand government pressure. U.S. officials say the consequences of such a pact would be grave. 'I think if they merge or decide to cooperate in a greater way, Mexico could potentially have a national security crisis,' the defense official said. He said the two have amassed so many people and weapons that Mexican President Felipe Calderon is 'fighting for his life' and 'for the life of Mexico right now'."We wish the Mexican voters all the best, but also send our sympathies. The drug cartels, after all, are not elected officials and will continue their deadly activities regardless of how the elections turn out.

Of course, you're just as dead no matter where you're killed. Chicago's Top Cop, however, thinks there's a difference. Why else would he create statistical categories for "indoor" and "outdoor" killings? The answer, of course, is politics. "This reeks of desperate statistical manipulation," writes Second City Cop.
Peter Bella pokes Jody Weis, the buffoon also known as the Chicago Police Superintendent. Despised and resented by many CPD officers, Weis is an overpaid tool of the local Democrat Machine. He's Mayor Daley's lap dog in a crisply press police uniform, but Daley is so pleased with his performance that he is "suggesting" that Weis take a pay cut from his current $310,000 annual salary.
Bella is a former police officer himself, so he's no stranger to this topic. He writes:
Weis, in his professional capacity as court jester, has determined there will now be two types of murder in Chicago. Insdide murder and outside murder- innies and outies. He must be reading those famed police publications, Sports Illustrated and the Victoria’s Secret catalog.

These classifications will give the perception the murder rate is not as high as it actually is. The city is not as dangerous as it really is. Voila! Eureka! Brilliant! The people will sleep much better now, knowing there is no longer need for rough men to protect them.
