Former CPD Commander Demoted, Sent To Rogers Park As Punishment

Former Cmdr. Ronald Kimble. Chicago Police Dept
Former Commander of Narcotics Ronald Kimble upset Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently and is being punished for not keeping his thoughts to himself.

"A Chicago Police Department commander this week was reminded of a very important rule: Never get on the mayor’s bad side," reports CWB Chicago. "CPD is famous — or perhaps infamous — for giving 'soft landings' to connected leaders who go astray. Assigning the wayward executive to a do-nothing placeholder post is common."

Not so for Ronald Kimble. He's no longer a Commander. Demoted to lieutenant, they move him to the midnight shift. The demotion is bad enough, but the shift change isn't the end of the world. Unless you live 23 miles away. You see, Kimble resides on the Far South Side of Chicago. His midnight gig is in the 24th District in Rogers Park. CWB Chicago quotes an unnamed CPD source as noting that Kimble now has a 23-mile daily commute. Rogers Park is along Lake Michigan and borders Evanston.

But why, exactly, did this happen? Let's go back to CWB Chicago:
The source said Kimble was one of 21 police department executives who joined a conference call Monday with Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Manpower at CPD’s Organized Crime Division, which includes Kimble’s former narcotics unit, is being slashed from over 900 cops to 187.
Kimble, the source said, went to bat for his unit, defending his performance and trying to justify runaway overtime expenses.
“He called her out,” the source said. “She launched him across the city.”

“He kept trying to tell everyone what narcotics had done,” according to the source. “It started getting loud.” Newly-appointed Police Supt. David Brown, who was on the call, “told him to shut up. It got out of hand.”
In short, Mayor Lightfoot is budget-cutting and feels the CPD can do with 713 fewer narcotics officers. That's a huge hit, and Kimble — the Commander of Narcotics — defended his unit's operations and spending.

But Lightfoot was having none of it. Exactly what Kimble said is unknown, but it sounds as though tempers flared and, as Brown said, "it got out of hand."

Kimble was not the only one to suffer. Kimble's supervisor, William Bradley, was removed as Deputy Chief of the new Criminal Networks Group, according to department sources, says the Chicago Sun-Times.

Bradley was also demoted to the rank of lieutenant, and assigned to a patrol district on Chicago's Northwest side, sources said.

“We can’t keep living in a world where the police department blows its overtime budget year in and year out by $100 million,” the mayor said last month.

Updated: Marcy Cruz Pleads Guilty To Attempted Murder for Brutal Bucktown Bat Attack

Evil Incarnate: Marcy Cruz
Update, October 22, 2013 - Bat-beating trial jurors hear defendant's jailhouse recordings - Suspect in Bucktown attack says in phone conversation he needed money for drugs, reports the Chicago Trib.

Update, July 10, 2013 - Three years ago, we called Marcy Cruz a "rabid dog." Yesterday, she pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder for her part in a brutal attack in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood on April 23, 2010.

Cruz, 28, is one of two people accused of the 2010 baseball bat attack in Bucktown, in the 1800 block of North Damen Avenue. Cruz pleaded guilty on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 and will testify against her co-defendant," reports ABC-7 Chicago.

The two counts of the attempted murder against Cruz are for part in the attack on Stacy Jurich, then 24, and Natasha McShane, then 23.

The bat attack caused severe brain damage to McShane, and she returned to her homeland in Ireland for brain surgery. She was in Chicago to study urban planning. McShane still "cannot speak beyond mumbles and she cannot walk or take care of herself," said a friend quoted by DNAInfo.

Marcy Cruz (Cook County Sheriff’s office)
Cruz's sentence is a mere 11 years in prison for each count, and to add insult to injury  her sentences will be served consecutively. Cruz must serve at least 85 percent before being eligible for parole, reports ABC-7.

11 years is not nearly long enough in our opinion, but at least this dangerous b*tch will be off the streets for a decade or more. We can only hope that she gets the living hell beaten out of her while in prison, just badly enough that when she's released she will be in a vegetative condition. In an ideal world, her sentence would have been longer, but in a plea deal she agreed to testify against co-defendant and fellow scumbag  Heriberto Viramontes, 34.  Viramontes has felony convictions for burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle, and about 30 other arrests on his record, reports CBS-2 Chicago. His trial is scheduled for September 9, 2013.

Earlier report: "No Pity For Rabid Dog Marcy Cruz"

May 4, 2010 - Edwin Cruz wants you to pity a rabid dog. It's not the rabid dog's fault, you see, that it has rabies. The rabid dog is Edwin Cruz's daughter Marcy (photo, CPD mugshot), accused of being the accomplice in the savage and cold-blooded attack on two women in Chicago on April 23, 2010. Cruz says his daughter Marcy is mentally ill and was off her prescribed medication.

Rabid Dogs: Marcy Cruz and Heriberto Viramontes
Call us cold hearted, but we really don't give a damn. If fact, we think Marcy Cruz should be executed along with accomplice Heriberto Viramontes. Here's why:

Two women, Natasha McShane, 23 and Stacy Jurich, 24, were brutally beaten with a baseball bat Friday, April 23 at about 3:00 a.m. They were walking in the 1800 block of N. Damen Avenue. Both victims were struck in the head with a wooden bat. McShane is still in a medically-induced coma and in critical condition. She is a UIC grad student from Northern Ireland who came to Chicago four months. Stacy Jurich, 24 was released from the hospital last week. (Post Script, July 12, 2011: Natasha McShane was flown home to Ireland for more brain surgery.)

Two suspects were quickly arrested by Chicago Police: Heriberto Viramontes and Marcy Cruz, boyfriend and girlfriend. Viramontes, say the police, swung the bat into the skulls of the two young women. Marcy Cruz, it is said, stayed in their van smoking dope while her man Heriberto went hunting for purses. Chicago police say they were able to find the two by tracking cell phones and credit cards stolen from the victims. ABC7 Chicago reported that "A follow-up investigation also reportedly included surveillance video recorded as the credit cards were being used. Police said they found other items belonging to McShane and Jurich when they searched the suspect's homes. Officials said they also have the bat."

Irish Central reports that Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said, "Cruz pointed out the potential victims to Viramontes after he told her he needed 'quick money for drugs.' Cruz told police that she 'smoked a blunt' of marijuana before the attack took place." When Cruz spotted Natasha McShane and Stacy Jurich, she said to Heriberto Viramontes, "look at all those drunk assholes coming out of the bar." Police also said they tracked down the suspects after they used cell phones and credit cards stolen during the attack.

Now, Marcy's father wants us to pity her. Chicagoist notes that "the father of Marcy Cruz, the female half of the couple being held in the late-April bat beating of two women in Bucktown, has come to her defense, saying Cruz is mentally ill and was off her prescribed medication. Saying that his daughter is bipolar, Edwin Cruz put a lot of the blame on Heriberto Viramontes, the man accused of wielding the bats in the attack: 'This guy, well, he was a manipulator. He's good with ladies, he's got sweet talk, he's got green eyes, he's pretty boy.' Both Cruz and Viramontes have been charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery for the attacks. 'It's very sad. It hurts all of us,' said Edwin. '(But) I don't think she should be (incarcerated). … She's not all there in her mind.'"

Cruz: One sick b*tch
Edwin Cruz wants us to believe, apparently, that all bi-polar people who stop taking their meds lurk in vans waiting for the right victims to pulverize and rob. Cruz claims his "mentally ill" daughter is really a sweet kid, and blames the bad boyfriend Viramontes. He seems in denial about the fact that his lovely daughter was hanging out with a vile scumbag, with an arrest as long as, well, a baseball bat.

According to NBC5 Chicago, "His rap sheet includes convictions for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, burglary and domestic battery, Cook County court records show. He also has a conviction for possession of a controlled substance, police said. His current stay in the jail is his 19th time in the facility."

Cruz the father claims that daughter Marcy did the bidding of Viramontes because he's "good with the ladies." Yeah, especially while he's swinging a baseball bat. Most "ladies," by the way, do not hang out and do the bidding of guys who behave as Viramontes allegedly did. Perhaps Daddy Cruz is unaware of the fact that his daughter is something of a looker herself, leaving open the possibility that Viramontes was actually the one acting under sexual influence. Is it not possible that Marcy Cruz was the "manipulator?"

Papa Cruz says his daughter should not be behind bars because "she's not all there in her mind." Perhaps he's unaware of the fact that there are plenty of people who are "criminally insane." The fact that she might be crazy does not change the fact that she is a danger to other people.

Let's say you're walking down the street, and you're lucky enough to be carrying a gun. You turn a corner and find yourself confronted by a growling dog, foam oozing from its mouth, a crazed look in its eyes. You realize the dog is rabid, out of its mind. You back off and try to get away, but the dog starts running toward you.

You have a split-second decision to make. Do you (a) draw your gun and shoot the insane beast before it kills you or infects you with rabies, and perhaps other people too, or (b) show compassion and pity for the poor thing because you know it is not in control of its own actions due to the rabies.

The second choice, of course, might be fatal. You shoot the rabid dog, and you are not required to show remorse for having done so. It was self defense, and the dog no longer poses a threat to anybody else.

Marcy Cruz is an (allegedly) rabid dog who needs to be put down. To excuse her (allegedly) criminal behavior on the grounds of being off her bi-polar meds is to insult millions of law abiding bi-polar people who do not associate with criminal scum and then urge them to go crack skulls to bring back stolen booty.

Updated: Media Can't Get It Right On Chicago's Uptown Shooting on June 28

JJ Peppers in Uptown, scene of gunfire on July 28, 2013
(Screenshot from WGN TV video)
June 29, 2013 - UPDATED, 2:00 PM - Chicago media can't seem to get their story straight on yesterday's shooting in Chicago's north side Uptown neighborhood. Is the number of victims five, four or six? Were they all male or were some female? How many people were actually hit by gunfire in Uptown last night?

The shooting happened by a JJ Peppers store in a strip mall around 7:15 PM on Friday at the intersection of N. Sheridan Road and W. Lawrence Avenue. Initial news reports said that five men were hit by gunfire, four critically wounded and one seriously.

Google search for "shooting uptown peppers wgn"
On WGN TV's 9PM newscast on Friday, however, Gaynor Hall reported from the shooting scene that police had amended the number of wounded down to four, all which were in "good condition."

WGN has since removed Hall's report and edited their story to reflect what other local media are saying: SIX people were wounded, two of which were female.

A Google search for "shooting uptown peppers wgn" finds a link to WGN's story, originally headlined "Four people shot outside Uptown strip mall."

That story today, however, has the edited headline "Six people shot outside Uptown strip mall," but still has this URL: http://wgntv.com/2013/06/29/five-people-shot-on-uptown-street-corner/

NBC5's story, screenshot at 3:00 PM, June 29, 2013
Laughably, NBC5 has a story headline that is non-committal: "Several Wounded in Uptown Shooting." NBC updated their story at 10:30 last night to say that "A police department spokesman said four were injured, adding that they were four males of unknown ages."

That's what Gaynor Hall reported for WGN. NBC has apparently not felt it necessary to update their story.

Some of the blame for this confusion should probably go the the Chicago Police Department for giving out bad information to the media.

Previous Reports, Friday, June 28:

UPDATED 10: 30 PM - Four  men were hit by gunfire this evening around 7:15 PM in the Uptown neighborhood on the city's north side.

NBC5 tweet from June 28, 2013: "5 wounded, 4 critically"
WGN TV is reporting late tonight that the Chicago Police say the number of those hit was actually four. WGN quotes police officials as saying that all four victims are in good condition at Illinois Masonic and St. Francis hospitals.

The shooting happened in front of the JJ Peppers convenience store in a strip mall at the intersection of N. Sheridan Road and W. Lawrence Avenue. It's a particularly rough part of a very rough neighborhood, just  one block east of the Aragon Entertainment Center. Two people were shot at the same location on June 10. The shooting happened even as a "positive loitering" event was taking place across the street (see below).

NBC5 Chicago reported that "Shots rang out at about 7:15 p.m. in the 4800 block of North Sheridan Road, a fire department spokesperson said. Five ambulances responded to the scene. Four people were critically wounded and one person was in serious condition, the spokesperson said." NBC notes that the story is still developing.

ABC7 Chicago said that all victims are male. "Four people were critically wounded and one person was in serious condition, Fire Media Affairs said. Two males were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and two males were taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said."

Uptown Update had a first-hand report, published at 8:50 PM. Their lead story until then, ironically, was about another useless "positive loitering" event from 7-8 pm, at the southwest corner of Lawrence and Sheridan, just inches from a shooting that "positive loitering" is supposed to prevent. The shooting, in front of JJ Peppers, is at the northwest corner of the intersection.

Cook County Sheriff Uncovers Gang Plot to Kill Cops

May 10, 2013 - A Chicago gang allegedly sent out a hit order to kill law enforcement officers, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Intelligence unit.

"The deadly order," reported Michael Sneed at the Sun-Times,  "came via the Cook County Jail grapevine" and "claims the leadership of the Satan Disciples street gang has called for the formation of an assassination unit entitled the 'Guerilla Mafia Cartel' which would be assigned the deadly mission."

The sheriff’s department shared the alert with 132 Cook County municipalities, including the Chicago Police Department, and also the FBI. “This information is raw and very preliminary,” said a top Chicago police source. “But it is better to be safe than sorry.” More at the Sun-Times.

According to the National Gang Crime Research Center, the Satan's Disciples (SD's) have operations in most of Chicago's surrounding suburbs. They also have a far-reaching national presence. The SD's have been around for 30 years and "are a predominantly Hispanic gang originating from Chicago. The gang is a 'Folks' gang, and uses therefore the six-pointed star in some of its graffiti, but almost always accentuated with its unique trademark of 'Devil' images. It typifies many of the older traditional Chicago-based gangs in respect to being basically an adult-run criminal enterprise that makes extensive use of juveniles in its drug distribution operations. Unlike the majority of those gangs, it has now spread to over 40 Chicago suburbs as well as to 22 other states. It is, therefore, a big player in the American gang crime scene."

Police Charge Two In Edgewater Narco Murders

February 28, 2011 - Chicago - Last Saturday night's massacre in the Edgewater neighborhood was the scene of a virtual police lockdown after officers found the bodies of two people and one badly injured person in an apartment. The dead victims' throats had been slashed. An ensuing chase resulted in the fatal police shooting of one suspect, Arturo Ibarra, who died on the street at N. Greenview and W. Devon. Police are now charging two other suspects in connection with the Edgewater murders, which are believed to have been the result of a nightmarish narcotics deal. The two being charged are Augustin Toscano and Raul Segura-Rodriguez. Both men face multiple charges. See Related Articles below. There will be a special public meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the criminal activity of last Saturday. Alderman Mary Ann Smith and police officials will present information and answer questions at the Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway Street (map), just south of W. Thorndale Avenue, half a block south of the Thorndale CTA Red Line station. Smith's 48th Ward includes the part of Edgewater in which the alleged drug deal and murders took place and where the pursuit of Ibarra began (Ibarra was killed in the 40th Ward, at N. Greenview and W. Devon). Murder Spree, Police Shooting Causes Chicago Alderman To Hold Special Meeting

February 27, 2011 - Chicago - Gruesome murders in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood yesterday led police on a short but wild chase that resulted in the fatal shooting of a suspect. For more on this story, see today's Chicago Sun-Times article "Man killed by police suspected in 13 other murders: sources" here. The events were so extraordinary that 48th Ward Alderman Mary Ann Smith will hold a special meeting on Monday evening to discuss them. Ald. Smith sent an email blast that said this: "As many of you have already heard from the media, we had a serious and unusual police/criminal incident in Edgewater yesterday. Within our neighborhood, there were incidents on the 5800 block of Winthrop stretching to Devon Avenue. The police and our office will be available at 7:00 Monday Evening at the Broadway Armory to discuss with concerned residents what occurred." (MAP) The Armory is located at 5917 N. Updated, 7:00 PM, February 27, 2011 - Gruesome murders in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood yesterday led police on a short but wild chase that resulted in the fatal shooting of a suspect. For more on this story, see today's Chicago Sun-Times article "Man killed by police suspected in 13 other murders: sources" here. Broadway Street, just south of W. Thorndale Avenue, half a block south of the Thorndale CTA Red Line station. Earlier Reports: February 26, 2011 - Chicago - What may have started as a robbery attempt just after 5:00 p.m. today near the Thorndale CTA Red Line station ended as a fatal police shooting on West Devon Avenue in the Edgewater neighborhood. Details are still coming in. A person (sex unknown) robbed or attempted to rob a store in the 1100 block of W. Thorndale Avenue (map). That block is full of small shops, and is located just north of the Broadway Armory. Police chased the robbery suspect north until they confronted him/her in the 1400 block of W. Devon Avenue at N. Greenview Avenue, next to the Dollar Happy Store and across from the Citgo gas station (map). The suspect was fatally shot by police around 5:20 p.m. Traffic, as of 6:07 p.m., is still being diverted from that intersection. A report by Chicago Breaking News, oddly, omits any mention of the fatality in their 5:54 p.m. update. Chicago News Bench was at the shooting scene at Devon and Greenview and saw the body on the street, along with the red crime scene tape. Yellow tape is always used to cordon off a crime scene, but red tape is used only when there a homicide is involved. They did, however, report that one police was shot at the Thorndale scene "near the intersection of Glenlake Avenue and Broadway, and the officer was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in good condition." An update at 6:57 p.m. by The Chicago Tribune quotes witnesses as saying that the chase "ended with the truck trying to turn south on Greenview Avenue, where shots were fired."

Exclusive: 9/21 Shooting in Uptown Was A Drive-By (Photos)

18 Hours Later, Sidewalk Still Bloody
Sept. 22, 2010 - Chicago - Last night's 6:00 p.m. shooting in Uptown was a drive-by. Two people were struck by bullets in front of Midtown Medical Center, 4527 North Sheridan Road (at the intersection of West Windsor Avenue). Nobody else is reporting this, but an eyewitness told Chicago News Bench today that the gunfire came from a "grayish" car as it drove southbound on Sheridan past the medical office. The witness said that there were "at least three people in the car." After the shooting, the car turned right onto West Sunnyside Avenue (see map) and made a U-turn. It then drove back, northbound, and passed through the scene of the shooting. Police were already arriving as the shooter's car passed by the second time, the witness said. There was no more gunfire after the first shots on the car's first pass. "They just drove right on through," the witness said, "because the police didn't know yet that this was the shooter's car. I told them what I saw, and then they started looking for that car." A readers tells us that the CAPS Beat 2312 meeting was told that police were on the crime scene in seconds because they were just up the street already. What the CAPS meeting was not told, however, was that the shooter casually drove right past them. The account that the witness gave Chicago News Bench today jives with what we reported last night. In our report, we said that the police are searching for a suspect "Pregnant Girl, Man Shot In Uptown"). whose name is Lonnie White, a Gangster Disciple and who "may be driving a silver/gray mid-sized Buick." Again, we are the only ones to have reported this so far. Note: Unlike Uptown Update, I actually get off my fat butt and walk the streets in search of information. We like commenters, but we don't like to rely on rumor and innuendo from anonymous emails. That's not journalism. It's gossip.

An Open Letter to Mayor Richard M. Daley (Failure)

A must-read, this hard-hitting letter was posted by Paul Huebl on Sept. 2 - before Mayor Daley announced he would not run again. Still, Daley's successor and the entire City Council, not to mention every rational citizen of Chicago, needs to read this: An Open Letter to Mayor Richard M. Daley: "Dear Mayor Daley: I was born and raised in Chicago. Your father was an honorable and good Mayor that deserved my vote. Unfortunately... You have turned over the streets to armed criminals. That’s because you left the law-abiding defenseless by violating their Civil Rights to protect themselves under the Second Amendment. Cops always used department provided ammunition to qualify on a firing range four times per year. If they had to shoot extra ammunition to qualify that was also provided. Now you have police qualifying only once per year with a measly 30 rounds. That endangers the police and public. Additionally it creates liability issues potentially costing many millions of dollars." Read the full post at Crime, Guns and Videotape...

The Real Meaning of the Execution-Style Lawndale Murders

It's no ordinary multiple murder. Four men were found shot dead, bound with duct tape, in a residential garage in the Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago's south side in the 6100 block of South Kildare Avenue.

When we broke that story the night it happened, September 2, we noted that police investigating the scene suspected "Mexican drug cartel" involvement in the killings. (I'll take it further and say today that this may be an indication coming bloody battles between two or more drug cartels right here in Chicago.)

We also reported that this was an execution-style operation. Although not known for certain, the evidence points to the bloody hands of the cartels. The police themselves think so.

That begs a few questions:

1) Has the Chicago Police Department said that they suspect cartel involvement?
2) If CPD has not said so, why not?
3) If so, why have none of the Chicago media mentioned that in any of their coverage of this sensational crime (as of 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 4)?

Huffington Post noted that "police told the Chicago Sun-Times the slayings appear to be drug-related, and multiple weapons were found at the scene" and "This type of violence is uncommon in the West Lawn neighborhood, police said."
No kidding. As common as shootings and killings are in Chicago, execution-style multiple murders reminiscent of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre are "uncommon" anywhere in the city - for the moment, at least.

Mayor Daley and CPD Supt. Weis love to tell us that Chicago's homicide rate is going down. It's gone down somewhat, but not enough. The Lawndale killings, however, have police privately worried that Mexican drug cartels may be starting to flex their muscle as they begin to move north into cities and states where they've had zero or very little presence. The Mexican cartel has operated primarily in the southwestern U.S. for obvious geographical and cultural reasons.

If the Mexican drug cartel is beginning to stake out serious territory in Chicago (I emphasize "if"), it is very worrisome. The recent case of Edgar Valdez Villarreal (alias "the Barbie") highlights this worry. The Atlanta Constitution Journal (ACJ) reported on August 31, 2010 that Valdez is the "allegedly brutal drug lord who federal authorities said ran a drug operation that brought cocaine by the truckload to Atlanta and sent those trucks back to a Mexican cartel carrying millions of dollars in cash." He was arrested on August 30 by Mexican authorities in a suburb of Mexico City.

ACJ's report is chilling. It said that in Mexico, "Valdez has been blamed for bloody drug and gang turf wars in which rivals were beheaded and hung from bridges." Perhaps even more stunning is the fact that "he's the rare American who has risen through the cartel ranks."

Although the recent Lawndale murders may seem like an isolated case to the casual observer, it should be remembered that there were drugs found at the crime scene. Daley and Weis may be reluctant to say the word "cartel" in referrence to the case because they don't want to acknowledge that the situation is bigger than they can handle. Remember, too, that CPD is shamefully understaffed and can't even keep up with regular street crime, let alone go into battle with the likes of a highly organized, well-funded and brutal Mexican drug cartel.

Worse yet, the Lawndale executions could indicate the beginning of an all-out street war between two competing drug cartels.

Just over a year ago, First Assistant U.S. Atty. Gary Shapiro said that Chicago is an important city for the international drug networks. In a Chicago Tribune report by Jeff Coen on August 20, 2009, Shapiro was quoted as saying that Chicago is "a major distribution hub of narcotics in the U.S." and that "drugs in huge quantities flow directly from Mexico to Chicago." Shapiro was speaking at a briefing in Chicago regarding a set of major indictments against, as Coen wrote, "36 individuals, including three cartel leaders, [who] were charged in eight indictments unsealed in Chicago, and additional defendants .... in New York. The three most significant defendants in the cases are leaders of two feuding cartels, authorities said."

In a related press conference coordinated with the one in Chicago that same day, Patrick Fitzgerald, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, "said the cases trace tons of cocaine that made their way to Chicago through Mexico 'by plane, by boat, by submarine' before being distributed, 'with hundreds of millions of dollars going in the other direction'."

Hundreds of millions of dollars, just in Chicago. To some that's more than enough incentive to shoot four guys in a garage. These guys make the Gangster Disciples look like nothing more than surly lemonade stand operators. The cartels, to a large extent, are the distributors to the local gangs. The real action, the real money and the real power in the local narcotics game is found with the cartels.

In Mexico, where drug-related violence has kille more than 28,000 people since 2006, the cartels wield more power than the government. Meanwhile, U.S. authorities are working hard to keep Mexican drug cartel violence from spilling across border. On Sept. 2, 2010, CBS News reported that "Gangs have employed warfare tactics previously unseen in Mexico, including car bombs and blockades in front of police stations and army garrisons. Underscoring the point, a shootout later Thursday between soldiers and suspected cartel gunmen in Nuevo Leon state, near Texas, left 25 suspects dead."

The cartels' presence north of the US-Mexican border is growing. NPR reported in March, 2009 that "The Justice Department says the cartels now have operations in at least 230 American cities, up from 50 in 2006. Many of those are smaller, agricultural cities with Hispanic communities — places like Mount Vernon, Wash. Less than an hour from the Canadian border, it's the last place you might expect to encounter the Mexican cartels. But Skagit County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Kading says the cartels are definitely here."

Back to Daley and Weis, who struggle daily to convince you and me that they're in control, not the ordinary street gangs. They are frightened, and rightly so, that the cartels will try to do in Chicago what they have successfully done in our southwest and in so many towns and cities in Mexico. With brutality, financing and technology that even Al Capone could not have dreamed of, the cartels have the potential of unleashing full blown terror on our streets. To acknowledge this publicly would certainly cause heavy political damage to Mayor Daley. To not acknowledge it is a tremendous disservice to the public, who are already frustrated by the insufficient numbers of cops on the streets. Shame on the media, as well, for not asking about cartel involvement in the Lawndale killings, and for not letting us all know what the next phase of Chicago street crime is destined to become. Perhaps they're simply afraid.

Drug Cartel Suspected In Execution-Style Garage Shooting on Chicago's South Side

September 3, 2010 - Four men were found shot in a garage in Chicago's south side Lawndale neighborhood last night. Three were dead when discovered; one died later in hospital. Today, the media is catching up to us on this story that we first broke last night at 8:55 p.m. The Chicago Sun-Times says that "Police discovered four males inside a garage in the 6100 block of South Kildare Avenue about 8:30 p.m., said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro, citing preliminary information. Sources said all four were shot." ... Actually, the four dead men were first discovered by the wife of one of the victims. The police did not discover them. A police source told Chicago News Bench last night that the dead men were found by a woman in a residential garage - that woman is the wife of one of the slain men. The Sun-Times report did reveal, however, that one of the victims was still alive when the police arrived. He died later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Oddly, the Sun-Times made no mention of the fact that all four men have Spanish surnames and that Mexican drug cartel involvement is strongly suspected by the CPD (we did). The Chicago Tribune has a good report today (posted at 2:45 p.m.). The actually name the victims (all Spanish surnames, as we reported last night). Oddly, the Tribune's otherwise excellent report made no mention of the fact that Mexican drug cartel involvement is strongly suspected by the CPD (we did). The Southtown Star reports that "Dead on the scene were Noel Casares, 25; Roberto Rivera, 30; and Alonzo Pena, who is believed to be in his 30s, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. A fourth man, Louis Santillian, 30, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 11:01 p.m. at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn." Oddly, the Southtown Star made no mention of the fact that all four men have Spanish surnames and that Mexican drug cartel involvement is strongly suspected by the CPD (we did). A sister-in-law of one of Alonzo Pena is quoted by the Trib as saying, "As far as I know he wasn't involved with drugs." What does that mean? Nothing, of course. The Trib also noted that police say "multiple weapons" were found at the scene. Did the sister-in-law know about that? The Trib also paraphrased the sister-in-law as saying that "a good father who was around for family gatherings and barbecues where the children would play with cousins." (Again, meaningless. Tony Soprano could be described in the same way.) CBS2 posted a story at 6:12 a.m. today that they took from the Sun-Times Media Wire. Oddly, CBS2 made no mention of the fact that all four men have Spanish surnames and that Mexican drug cartel involvement is strongly suspected by the CPD (we did). FoxNews posted a story at 10:00 a.m. today. Oddly, FoxNews made no mention of the fact that all four men have Spanish surnames and that Mexican drug cartel involvement is strongly suspected by the CPD (we did). Updated - CPD's Mobile Strike Force Invades Uptown

August 6, 2010 - 8:15 PM - CHICAGO - You'll see more police than usual on the streets of Uptown tonight. Between 40 and 44 Mobile Strike Force (MSF) vehicles are making a show of force on the troubled streets of Uptown tonight. UPDATE: Shots Fired in Uptown: 7-Eleven at 4155 N Broadway at Chicago News Report "They'll be responding in force to just about everything," a well-place CPD source told Chicago News Bench tonight. "Broken windows, prostitution, everything. They're out to clean it up." You might also see a helicopter or two tonight. The MSF consists mostly of special-duty officers who are not restricted to any particular beat or district. The MSF moves into an area as needed, and it's been decided that it's time for them to make a rare North Side appearance. The MSF was created in 2008. Uptown is on the far north side of Chicago, along the shore of Lake Michigan. Although it might not be as bad as some areas of Chicago, there are parts of it that are as bad as the notorious Austin District on the West Side. The area from N. Sheridan and W. Wilson west to N. Magnolia, for example. On July 28, two men were shot in the late afternoon in the 4500 block of N. Magnolia. One died immediately, falling dead in the street (the media reported incorrectly the nontruth from CPD that he died after 1:00 a.m. the next morning in a hospital). The next day, July 29, there was retaliatory gang shooting a few blocks away. Nobody was reported injured during that afternoon spree near W. Sunnyside and N. Sheridan. Those shooting incidents are only two of many that have occurred in Uptown's 46th Ward over the years. For more about shootings in Uptown, click here. While some may criticize the MSF presence in Uptown the sign of a "Police State," we say it's a rational, welcome and overdue response to the growing Gangster State.
