Cook County Sheriff Uncovers Gang Plot to Kill Cops

May 10, 2013 - A Chicago gang allegedly sent out a hit order to kill law enforcement officers, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Intelligence unit.

"The deadly order," reported Michael Sneed at the Sun-Times,  "came via the Cook County Jail grapevine" and "claims the leadership of the Satan Disciples street gang has called for the formation of an assassination unit entitled the 'Guerilla Mafia Cartel' which would be assigned the deadly mission."

The sheriff’s department shared the alert with 132 Cook County municipalities, including the Chicago Police Department, and also the FBI. “This information is raw and very preliminary,” said a top Chicago police source. “But it is better to be safe than sorry.” More at the Sun-Times.

According to the National Gang Crime Research Center, the Satan's Disciples (SD's) have operations in most of Chicago's surrounding suburbs. They also have a far-reaching national presence. The SD's have been around for 30 years and "are a predominantly Hispanic gang originating from Chicago. The gang is a 'Folks' gang, and uses therefore the six-pointed star in some of its graffiti, but almost always accentuated with its unique trademark of 'Devil' images. It typifies many of the older traditional Chicago-based gangs in respect to being basically an adult-run criminal enterprise that makes extensive use of juveniles in its drug distribution operations. Unlike the majority of those gangs, it has now spread to over 40 Chicago suburbs as well as to 22 other states. It is, therefore, a big player in the American gang crime scene."

"Extremely Dangerous" FBI Fugitive Paris Poe Captured

UPDATED Thursday, May 2, 2013 - Paris Poe led federal and local authorities on a day long manhunt. Local schools were locked down as a precaution against this "extremely dangerous" fugitive.

He was caught early this evening on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin ... in a "high-risk traffic stop." Madison Police Lt. Cory Nelson told The Associated Press that a SWAT team arrested Poe, of Chicago. "Shortly after 7 p.m. Madison Police found Paris Poe on Highway 30 between Fair Oaks and Highway 51," reports NBC15. "Officers were monitoring a car and saw Poe enter with a woman. Because he was expected to be armed officers ordered him from the car at gunpoint and he complied without any incident or injuries. Police say he will be taken to the Dane County Jail before extradition hearings seeking his return to the Chicago area. Investigators there want to question him regarding a gang-related homicide case. They say he is also in violation of his parole."

Previous Reports:
May 2, 2013 - 6:30 PM - The FBI and Wisconsin law enforcement agencies are still hunting for Paris Poe, 33, of Chicago. He is described as "a very dangerous" man on the run from the law in Illinois. After a day long manhunt, the  FBI says that Poe is probably still in the great Madison area. Poe is also known by the nickname "Polerowski."

The search for Poe led to the lock down of several schools, public and private, in the neighboring communities of Verona and Fitchburg to lock down as a precaution. On Madison's south side, Leopold Elementary, was locked down for a while, as was Chavez Elementary School.

Poe was seen at a hotel earlier in the day, causing authorities to concentrate their search in an area just south of Madison, the state capitol. Paris Poe is wanted in connection with a federal murder investigation in Illinois. "The FBI said it was continuing to receive tips suggesting that Poe remained within a three-mile radius of the hotel and was possibly armed with a handgun," reports Seattle PI.

Poe was convicted of aggravated battery and robbery in 2009 and paroled in June 2011, reports the CT Post. A federal warrant for his arrest was issued April 17. He is charged with crossing state lines to avoid arrest for an alleged parole violation.

The FBI offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to his capture (not $5,000 as most media are reporting). Poe is 6 feet tall, 200 pounds. He has a tattoo that reads "Chief Hobo" on his upper right arm and another tattoo that reads "RIP Angie" on his upper left arm.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald To Quit On June 30

May 23, 2012 - U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald will step down on June 30, reports CBS2 Chicago. "He took over on Sept. 1, 2001, making him the longest-serving U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. He became a national celebrity for going after political corruption in Illinois. Most notably, he led the prosecutions of both Gov. George Ryan and Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who are both serving time in prison."

Fitzgerald is, until June 30, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

This morning's official press release from the U.S. Department of Justice said, "Mr. Fitzgerald notified the White House, Attorney General Eric Holder, and U.S. Sens. Richard Durbin and Mark Kirk this morning of his decision to step down from the presidentially appointed post that he has held since Sept. 1, 2001, making him the longest-serving U.S. Attorney ever in Chicago. Mr. Fitzgerald, 51, has no future employment plans and will take time off this summer before considering career options. Including his tenure as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in New York, Mr. Fitzgerald is leaving the Justice Department after nearly 24 years."  See the entire statement here (pdf).

The release also noted that Fitzgerald served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, where he took part in the prosecution of United States v. Osama Bin Laden, et al., "involving the August 1998 bombings of the United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the trial of United States v. Omar Abdel Rahman, et al., involving the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and a plot to bomb other New York landmarks." You can see Fitzgerald's official biography here.

"Fitzgerald has been the longest serving U.S. attorney in Chicago history," says the Chicago Tribune today, "holding the office for more than 10 ½ years."

Greg Hinz at Crain's Chicago Business makes a good point about Fitzgerald's departure: The political games that will surely be played in the effort to replace the irreplaceable crime fighter:

"The question now," ponders Hinz in his column today, "is who President Barack Obama will select for this extraordinarily sensitive job — and whether Senate confirmation will come before the November election."

Hot Video: Female Cop Blasts Hostage Holder in Canton, China

Incredible news video (see below). Several versions of this exist because there were a number of news crews on the scene, and we think this is the best one. A gutsy female police officer speaks with a man holding a female hostage. The cop pretends to holster her pistol at about 5:07 into the video. Then suddenly, at 5:12, she dashes across the sidewalk while drawing her gun -- and shoots the perp. He falls and stumbles backward and the hostage falls straight down. It all happens in the blink of an eye - the cop glances at the hostage to make sure she's okay... then shoots the hostage taker three more times! Sadly, the bad guy survived the shooting and at 6:59 into the vid we're shown the hospital where he was taken. The fate of the kidnapper is unclear. This is how a hostage situation should be handled, period. Clean, cost efficient, and one hell of a deterrent to other morons who might consider taking a hostage. That police officer is a real hero. If the perp survived his bullet wounds, there will be a very swift trial. One thing is virtually assured: He will be found guilty, then either be executed or sentenced to a very long and unpleasant prison term - and that's a good thing. No drawn-out stupidity, no ACLU, no liberal judges, no parole, no lawsuits, no muss, no fuss. Just fast, effective justice.

51 of the Best Tatooed Mug Shots Ever

When you look at these 51 mugshots your initial reaction might be, "What kind of moron would do that to themselves?" Then you quickly remember that these are people who were photographed by the police for (allegedly) doing stupid things. Limited intelligence and tatoos often go together. I'm not saying that everyone who gets ink is a moron, but you can't deny that these folks approached self-adornment in a very bad way. See all 51 photos in this "collection of mugshots of tattooed faces and body parts for your study" at Anorak.

How California Penal Code Deals With Immigration

Barack Obama, Eric Holder and most other Democrats criticized Arizona's recently passed immigration law (SB1070) even before they read it (have they read it yet?). That didn't stop them, and other morons such as Chicago aldermen, from calling supporters of SB1070 Nazis and demanding a boycott of Arizona. But... Have they read Section 833-851.90 of the California Penal Code? They might want to call for a boycott of California and calling residents of that state Nazis, too. 834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws. (b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following: (1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status. (2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or leave the United States. (3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal status and provide any additional information that may be requested by any other public entity. (c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city, county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.

Chicago's 24th District Brass Shakeup Raises Questions

ROGERS PARK, CHICAGO - The mood was jubilant at the 24th District cop shop when it was announced that Commander Steven Caluris was out, officially replaced on Monday, Dec. 1 by David A. Sobczyk. Caluris was not popular with his 24th Dist. officers, many of whom openly expressed their dislike of him. The mild-mannered Caluris left without fanfare. No send off. No public goodbye, in stark contrast to the overblown and messy "introduction" he received from 49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore back on May 5, 2008. The transition leaves questions, however. The announcement of Sobczyk’s appointment was covered on Wednesday, Nov. 26 on chicagobreakingnews.com: Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis announced several key promotions and staff changes, including the creation of new positions inside the department. The announcement comes on the heels of the department's 2009 budget… Where did Caluris go? He now has Sobczyk’s previous duties. Sobczyk was given Caluris’s former job, and in the same shakeup Caluris was reassigned to Sobczyk’s former position as Commander, Deployment Operations Center within the CPD’s Bureau of Investigative Services. Not surprisingly, the mainstream press gave virtually no coverage to the shakeup, which involved not just the 24th District, but many other parts of the Chicago Police Department. Second City Sarge, for example, covered it on the 26th. However, on Monday, Nov. 24, two days before the announcement of Caluris’s ouster, Caluris was a panelist in a “Town Hall Meeting” to discuss policing and crime in Rogers Park. He sat at a table with State Senator Heather Steans, State Representative Harry Osterman, and Ald. Moore. Nobody told the roughly 75 attending Rogers Park residents that Caluris was about to be replaced as Commander of the 24th District. Sobczyk was not in the room. If he was, he did not make himself known to the neighbors. This all begs more questions: 1) Did CPD Chief Jody Weiss not tell any of the commanders involved of their pending job reassignments? 2) If Caluris was informed of his pending reassignment out of Rogers Park and 24th District, was he misrepresenting himself at the Town Hall Meeting? 3) Is Ald. Moore really so out of the loop that he was unaware of Caluris’s imminent ouster? 4) If Moore did not know, Is Jody Weiss so arrogant that he couldn’t give a heads-up to the aldermen who have territory within the 24th District? Sobczyk is a 25-year veteran of the CPD with FBI training. He is a nationally recognized expert on terrorism.

In an August 20, 2008 article at ijis.org, he talked about terrorism and its relation to crime in general: According to Chicago Police Cmdr. David Sobczyk, head of the Deployment Operations Center, of which CPIC is an extension, focusing both on crime and terrorism strengthens the antiterrorism mission. Not only are everyday crimes sometimes precursors to a terrorist attack, but more importantly, having a center that is constantly being exercised 24/7 by responding to actual public safety incidents only makes staff more skilled and effective in dealing with a terrorist threat. (Source) Sobczyk’s resume includes being the Commander of the Chicago Police Department's Deployment Operations Center (DOC): “This Unit houses Chicago's Counter Terrorism Section and serves as the Police Department's intelligence hub. Commander Sobczyk is a veteran of over 25 years with the Chicago Police Department whose previous assignments include District Law Enforcement, the Public Housing Section, Gang Crimes Section, Vice Control, the Intelligence Section, Patrol Division Administration and the Gang Intelligence Section.” (Source) As noted above, Sobczyk is a terrorism expert. He has extensive experience working with “intelligence fusion,” the latest model of intelligence sharing between agencies. The model is also used by police departments, such as the CPD, to share information quickly between units within those departments. “Resources and databases are combined and critical crime-fighting information is shared, allowing law enforcement agencies big and small to be on the same page.” (Source) The motivation behind intelligence fusion is to “fill in gaps in intelligence-gathering that were discovered after the Sept. 11 attacks.” (Source) "The whole object is to change the investigative culture of what we do as a department, whether it's related to violent crime or Homeland Security, and we do a very good job of that," said Cdr. David Sobczyk of the Chicago Police Department. "Things that normally would have taken days, weeks or months to provide, we give instantaneously." (Source) Perfect. The new commander of the 24th District can now give us information “instantaneously” about local crime that “normally would have taken days, weeks or months to provide.” We look forward to 24th District crime statistics being “instantaneously” provided. While that would make residents happy, it would probably displease tight-lipped CPD spokeswoman Monique Bond. As for Ald. Moore, he’ll be oblivious to any difference. Chicago Police Shoot, Kill Man

Mourning Officer Richard Francis, Chicago Police Department

I hope you will all join me in mourning the loss of one of Chicago's finest. Chicago Police Officer Richard Francis was shot and killed with his own gun early this morning. He died while on duty, out there in the tough streets of Chicago. He was willing to put his life on the line for you and for me, people he did not know. Officer Francis, like every other Chicago police officer, was there to do a tough job. Very recently, I had an unpleasant experience with an individual police officer. I filed a formal complaint with him, sitting in the office of 24th District Commander Steven Caluris as I gave my statement to a very polite lieutenant. I feel it is every citizen's duty to file such a report when one is merited. They won't say it publicly very often, but the good cops resent the bad ones, and the citizenry must step forward now and then to help the good cops maintain a good police force - and improve the one they already have. Having said that, I'll tell you that I was mugged in a Chicago subway station in the mid-1980s by two black guys. I don't hold their behavior against all black people. That would be irrational and unfair. They were two individuals acting badly. Similarly, I don't hold the actions of any individual police officer against all law enforcement personnel. That, too, would be irrational and unfair. We should never doubt that the vast majority of law enforcement officers are doing a job that 99.9999999 percent of us would not only refuse to do, but would not be capable of doing. They are extraordinary men and women. Listen to a police scanner sometime and you will hear dispatchers calling out to the officers on duty. A typical call: "Five males fighting, caller says two of them have guns. Any units nearby?" Would you eagerly put your life on the line to drive over to a bunch of guys, some with weapons, and that's all you know about them? Would you? The police officers do it regularly, every night. Without hesitation, I hear officers jump on the air to tell their dispatcher that they are on their way to what could be their last action. These men and women eagerly walk into danger, knowingly putting their lives in potential jeopardy with every routine traffic stop, domestic intervention, curfew stop, and so on. It's been said many times that the only thing keeping chaos at bay is the police. Listen to a police scanner some night, and you'll know that this is true. I have never been one those who call law enforcement officers "pigs." I have never hated the police. Here in Rogers Park, the Chicago neighborhood in which I reside, we have more than our share of people who do call police officers "pigs" and openly express their dislike for our police officers. You can bet that there will be at least a few patrons at the Red Line Tap and the Heartland Cafe tonight breathlessly expressing their pleasure at the death of another police officer. I hope those patrons get home safely tonight, but if they encounter trouble, will they call 911 to come save them? Or, perhaps, one of the many cop-hating supporters of 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore?

Blogger Blows Police Operation

The Bench would like to correct an error from yesterday's post, "Crack Den Dispersed at 1135 W. Lunt Avenue." We reported that "36 Cook County Sheriff's deputies" were amongst the law enforcement officers that busted up an alleged crack den at 1135 W. Lunt. In fact, it was three deputies, not 36. Damned typos!!!

It is unknown whether any of the officers are gay, but at least one gay man is known to reside in the building.

HOT: U.S. Attorney Sutton Linked to House of Death

Leaked letter links U.S. Attorney Sutton to cover-up in House of Death Let's see how long it takes the MSM to pick up on this. So far, only Narco News has it, with one pickup by a news outlet in New Zealand. And, of course, The Bench. Thanks to Narco News for this September 15th report, linked to here... A document known as the Joint Assessment Team report, or JAT, was put together in the wake of a DEA and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigation into the government’s role in the brutal murders — which nearly cost the lives of a DEA agent and his family...Narco News has recently obtained a new document that proves the JAT was provided to the office of U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton in San Antonio, Texas. That new document is a letter written by a high-level DEA official to the chief of the criminal unit in Sutton’s office. FULL ARTICLE...
