Uptown Update's Unjournalism

Chicago - It is staggering to see this kind of frantic speculation, gossip and innuendo pass for "reporting," much less journalism. Let's keep this simple and leave the world "journalism" out. Let's just talk about reporting, something that a popular blog called "Uptown Update" has always had a difficult time with.

The anonymous bloggers (I know who they are) are good, I admit, at little posts about laundromat grand openings and free adverts for restaurants and cupcake shops.

Yes, by technicality that's "reporting." When it comes to reporting about "newsy" items, however, Uptown Update fails miserably. I know for a fact that the "UU" bloggers rarely visit the scene of a news story in their own neighborhood. Rather, for the vast majority of what they pass as "news reports," UU relies almost soley on frantically written, breathless emails and text messages from readers. Those "reports" are very often written by someone who "just passed by" an event and is - often by admission - guessing at what was going on.

A sadly typical example of UU's brand of "reporting" was posted just last Friday, Sept. 24, 2010. It involved a large group of cheerful, happy people marching through the streets of Uptown, cheering each other loudly and holding U.S. flags. A Tea Party rally, perhaps? Most people of average curiosity would have asked these obviously friendly people what they were up to, as I did.

I bring this up now because several people in the neighborhood have asked me about "the Tea Party rally in Uptown last Friday." The first time I was asked, I laughed and said there was no such rally in Uptown. Ever. I was told they read about it on Uptown Update. The second and third times I heard about it, however, I was irked by the inaccuracy of UU's "reporting" and by the misinformation that UU habitually disseminates.

I happened to witness this mystifying march myself. While walking along N. Sheridan Avenue last Friday morning, I saw the group of about 100 people a block away. As an active Tea Partier myself, I knew that there were no Tea Party rallies scheduled in Uptown. I followed the happy group for half a block as they turned west onto W. Lawrence. I asked one guy in the group, a middle aged man, what they were up to. He explained that they were having a combination birthday and retirement celebration for the founder of their group.

I don't remember the name of the group or of the retired birthday boy. I do remember the middle aged guy telling me that the founder was "a great mentor" for everyone in the group. No, not a cult thing, nothing weird, just inspirational financial and lifestyle mentoring. Not a Tea Party, not a political march per se, despite the handful of pro-caplitalism political signs. Remember, these folks were celebrating their mentor, a man who has helped them become financially successful. Given that, they would naturally also celebrate capitalism, the system that made their financial successes possible.

Enter Uptown Update. Or, rather, insert speculative gossip via email courtesy of Uptown Update. Their Sept. 24 "report," with no byline, was titled "Rally Reason?" The "report" starts with two quick admissions of ignorance. First, the anonymous person who posted the "report" wrote, "We had several readers write in asking about this rally near the Aragon this morning." That's all they wrote, too.

Then, the first reader quoted by UU said this (excerpts): "Does anyone know what the rally at the Lawrence L stop was about today? I was caught in the middle of it and honestly have no clue what it was about."

Let's pause for a moment. This dolt was "caught in the middle of it," yet has "no clue" what it was? We must assume that the reader wondered what was happening while "caught in the middle" of the walking celebration, yet his/her confession of not knowing is proof that he/she did not bother to ask any of the participants. In the reader's fourth paragraph, he/she wrote this:

The attendees seemed to be enthusiastic, but I couldn't decipher what about. Common calls were "Freedom is free" and "Freedom train." The most common sign I saw claimed "Jobs suck." There were a great deal of video cameras filming the entire debacle.

Again the reader admits that he/she could not "decipher" what the march was about. Had he/she taken 30 seconds to ask and hear a quick explanation, he/she would know that "Freedom is free" and the other slogans are about financial independence. Instead, what we were handed was a long admission of timidity and deliberate ignorance of that in which the reader was "caught in the middle." The reader ended with this (emphasis added):

I just wanted to get to work and they were in the way for absolutely no reason I can decipher. Since I was in no mood for any of it (remember, not a morning person), I turned up my headphones and managed not to make snide comments to these obviously enthusiastic people. A rally is fine, I suppose, but would it hurt them to make their purpose manifest to passers by?"

The reader not only over used the word "decipher," he/she made zero attempt to do so. In a seeming contradiction, he/she was in "no mood for any of it," yet he/she was interested enough to note several slogans and other details while observing them closely for at least several minutes. Not only did he/she not ask any of them for an explanation, he/she then deliberately ensured further ignorance by turning up his/her headphones to shut out information. Then, with astonishing hypocrisy, the reader asked "would it hurt them to make their purpose manifest to passers by?" Well, as I noted above, they were all very happy to explain it to anyone who asked.

That's sad, but even sadder is another commenter, a fool named "Stu." Here's what Stu wrote, in part (my emphasis added):

When asked what it was about everyone who was carrying signs that said "Stop Socialism" "Freedom" "Be an Entrepeneur" "America" said their "friend" who was a corporate recruiter who worked on in building on Sheridan road between Lawrence and Leland had retired at age 26. He was making 9,000 dollars a month...that's 108,000 at dollars a year! This was a tea party and the people were like zombies, goofy, lots of Wisconsin liscence plates....a right wing rally in Uptown. The crowd was diverse and therefore, no doubt Churchy. I told them this was Uptown and to get their right wing asses out of here...that's how I feel anyway. They lied about what they were doing. that's what I found so strange. The story of the 26 year old makes no sense at all...it was just a cover to prevent people from getting angry at them.

Stu, apparently, is one of the many, many overly medicated patients warehoused in Uptown who are allowed to stagger through the streets unattended, drooling on himself and regretting all day long that he forgot his tinfoil hat back at the nursing home. I think Stu got the age of the retiring birthday boy wrong, but we'll let that pass. Stu's comment is so wrought with inaccuracies and paranoia, however, that I cannot resist deconstructing it:

"This was a tea party and the people were like zombies, goofy, lots of Wisconsin liscence [sic] plates," wrote Stu.

No, it was NOT a Tea Party, as I explained. Believe me, a Tea Party would not have happened in Uptown without my knowing about it. As for being like "zombies, goofy," I saw no evidence of zombiness. Some of the folks were acting a bit goofy, but in that fun way that we all get when we're in a celebratory mood and with a big crowd of likeminded celebrants. I have no idea where Stu saw "lots of Wisconsin liscence [sic] plates," because this was a march on foot. It was not a car parade, nor was it a "right wing rally."

Stu wrote that "The crowd was diverse and therefore, no doubt Churchy," which only makes my brain hurt. A diverse crowd is necessarily "Churchy?" Huh? What? Does this mean, then, that a large gathering of atheists, which is ethnically diverse, would undoubtedly be "Churchy?" Ye gods, the liberal mind is amusing. Scary, as we see so often, but amusing.

Brave Stu "told them this was Uptown and to get their right wing asses out of here," and seems convinced that "They lied about what they were doing." The were not lying and Stu has no proof that they were. But here's where Stu exposes himself as a hateful liberal: He told them to get their "right wing asses" out of liberal, tolerant, Left-leaning, "progressive," proud-to-be-diverse Uptown. See, that's how it works for liberals. They love everybody, as long as those they love have exactly the same political beliefs and suffer the same symptoms of over-medication.

Uptown Update never did answer it's own question, posed in their single sentence introduction to a diatribe of mostly-guesswork comments: ""We had several readers write in asking about this rally near the Aragon this morning." The conflicting opinions, suspicions, and paranoia within the response to UU's pitiful non-attempt to get to the bottom of the mysterious non-Tea Party event only led to more questions and confusion, providing no authoritative information. Uptown Update normally operates this way, and in this way provides a great disservice to all who read it.

This is what passes for "reporting" at Uptown Update. Good job, UU, you manage daily to show us all how not to do it, and why so many people still don't trust the Internet for news. Do us all a favor and stick to your little reports about chocolate mints and free cake. Oh, and stop using graphics from all over the web without attribution or links to their sources. I mean, you have a professional graphic artist on your staff, don't you?

Why should you vote this November? Here's the answer, in a 3:10 video. How should you vote this November. Again, here's the answer, in a 3:10 video. Ronald Reagan has a voiceover in this: "This is the issue of this election. Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves." Media Ignoring Jesse Jackson Jr's Challenger Hayes

Reverend Isaac C. Hayes
As is typical of Chicago's "mainstream media," the Republican running against the Democrat gets sparse - if any - coverage. Such is the case with Rev. Isaac C. Hayes, the Republican running against Democrat Jesse Jackson, Jr., the incumbent congressman in the 2nd Congressional District of Illinois.

Even with the stunning scandals swirling around Jackson - the blonde "social acquaintance" (ahem) and the recent allegations that Jackson micro-managed a pay-to-play attempt to bribe his way into being appointed to the U.S. Senate by Gov. Blagojevich, the local press hardly ever refers to Hayes. Even "conservative" talk radio station WLS 890 AM has hardly mentioned him, let alone had him on the air.

Don Wade and Roma, the morning drive dynamic duo, fawn all over Jackson, but have yet to interview Hayes. To his credit, WLS host Cisco Cotto, the one-man powerhouse who follows Don and Roma from 9:00-11:00 a.m., interviewed Hayes on recently. Oddly, however, the Hayes interview audio is not posted at WLS, while the Jackson audio is.Would it kill the "conservative" Don and Roma to give a little air time to Republican Isaac Hayes? Would it?

These are the reasons for Hayes's Sept. 22 press release. It had the header, "HAYES SAYS IT'S TIME FOR THE PRESS TO HOLD JACKSON ACCOUNTABLE."

And by gosh, he's right.

CHICAGO: Republican nominee for Illinois 2ndCongressional District Isaac Hayes issued the following statement regarding what he sees as a failure by the press to hold Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. accountable for recent scandals that have surfaced. "Over the course of this political season I have repeatedly heard that the Illinois 2nd Congressional seat is safe. The presumption is that Black voters don’t care about character and values. I find it quite condescending to suggest the ethical and moral disclosures that have plagued our current Representative will just be swept under the rug. "The Black community wants honest government like everyone else. We want jobs, entrepreneurship opportunities, great schools and safe communities.

After sixteen years of Mr. Jackson we have not seen that materialize. This is why it baffles me when I read Chicagoland newspapers that suggest my opponent has done a good job. Bringing home pork may be good politics, but the people in the 9th Ward, Harvey and Dixmoor remain economically distressed. His spending spree in Washington at taxpayers’ expense has contributed to the doubling of the national debt from $7 trillion when he first entered office to $14 trillion today. "From day one, this election has been about character and values. Do we want a continuation of the three-peat of political corruption that has plagued this district for the past 30 years, or do we want to chart a new path forward.

I find it personally offensive to Christian Democrats and moral Independents who expect their Representatives to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity. "Mr. Jackson can tout how much money he has redistributed at the expense of job creators, but the newspapers that allege he has done a good job as Congressman must face the reality of the indicators called jobs, small businesses, school performance and crime. For each of these he receives a failing grade and its time we stop the whitewashing and hold this man accountable!" Robinson Challenges Heather Steans On Quinn's AFSCME Deal

Adam Robinson is openly challenging State Senator Heather Steans to explain her position on Governor Quinn's suspicious AFSCME deal. Robinson is the Republican nominee who is running against Steans, the incumbent Machine Democrat, in the 7th State Senate District. He called Steans's position on Governor Quinn's AFSCME deal "an election-year sell-out that hurts Illinois." The AFSCME deal provides further proof that the Democrat Party of Illinois is in bed with Big Union leadership, and puts their interests ahead of Illinois. In what may be his hardest hitting press release to date, Robinson questions the sincerity of Democrats like Quinn and Steans to bring fiscal responsibility to Illinois, which is in a severe financial crisis. Adam Robinson is a small business owner and community advocate whose campaign platform calls for "policies that cut wasteful spending, increase jobs, and promote transparency." See his website at http://www.electadamrobinson.com/. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 22, 2010Adam Robinson, the challenger for Illinois' 7th District State Senate seat, today called on Senator Heather Steans to state her position on Governor Quinn's AFSCME deal, as reported by Crain's Chicago Business. Under the tentative agreement reached this week, Quinn would agree not to lay off any of 50,000 unionized state workers, or close any facilities where they work, until at least mid-2012. The announcement of this deal came only days after the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees endorsed Quinn for governor. "This is yet another shameful example of Illinois' long-standing culture of corruption. Here we have a sitting governor who, trailing significantly in his bid for re-election, has decided to sell Illinois taxpayers down the river in order to pick up votes. Haven't we had enough of this nonsense? "With Illinois facing a $13B budget deficit, the last thing Quinn should be doing is locking us into a deal that prevents our state from taking necessary steps to trim the state workforce or close facilities. Our district's social service agencies have been decimated by budget cuts over the past two years. Should we be wasting our limited resources unnecessary state facilities, or on the services that 7th district residents care about?" "I call on my opponent to state her position on this shameful and irresponsible deal, which is nothing short of an election year sell-out. Voters deserve to know whether my opponent stands with them, or with the union bosses who are milking taxpayers for every last dollar - at the expense of our neediest residents." Exclusive: 9/21 Shooting in Uptown Was A Drive-By (Photos)

18 Hours Later, Sidewalk Still Bloody
Sept. 22, 2010 - Chicago - Last night's 6:00 p.m. shooting in Uptown was a drive-by. Two people were struck by bullets in front of Midtown Medical Center, 4527 North Sheridan Road (at the intersection of West Windsor Avenue). Nobody else is reporting this, but an eyewitness told Chicago News Bench today that the gunfire came from a "grayish" car as it drove southbound on Sheridan past the medical office. The witness said that there were "at least three people in the car." After the shooting, the car turned right onto West Sunnyside Avenue (see map) and made a U-turn. It then drove back, northbound, and passed through the scene of the shooting. Police were already arriving as the shooter's car passed by the second time, the witness said. There was no more gunfire after the first shots on the car's first pass. "They just drove right on through," the witness said, "because the police didn't know yet that this was the shooter's car. I told them what I saw, and then they started looking for that car." A readers tells us that the CAPS Beat 2312 meeting was told that police were on the crime scene in seconds because they were just up the street already. What the CAPS meeting was not told, however, was that the shooter casually drove right past them. The account that the witness gave Chicago News Bench today jives with what we reported last night. In our report, we said that the police are searching for a suspect "Pregnant Girl, Man Shot In Uptown"). whose name is Lonnie White, a Gangster Disciple and who "may be driving a silver/gray mid-sized Buick." Again, we are the only ones to have reported this so far. Note: Unlike Uptown Update, I actually get off my fat butt and walk the streets in search of information. We like commenters, but we don't like to rely on rumor and innuendo from anonymous emails. That's not journalism. It's gossip.

Updated: Chicago Tea Patriots Organizer Found Guilty

The organizer of a rogue Tea Party group called "Chicago Tea Patriots" is under court supervision since she was found guilty in June, 2010 of committing telephone harassment in 2009.

Update, Oct. 5, 2010: Also see ""Chuckie The Clown" Wojtowicz" - Portions of a vicious and threatening email sent by Wojtowicz.

Her name is Catherina Wojtowicz, and she works in the Oak Lawn campaign office of Illinios Senator Bill Brady, Republican nominee for governor. Brady, we're told, is aware of her bad behavior. Chicago News Bench has obtained a copy of Catherina Wojtowicz's Criminal Sentence Order (Case Number 2009CM006375-0001) dated June 17, 2010. Click here to see the Criminal Sentence Order.

Wojtowicz pleaded, and was found to be, guilty of "harassment by telephone." That's a violation of 720 ILCS 135/1-1 and is a Class B Misdemeanor. Wojtowicz was "sentenced to Court supervision" for one year, during which time she must "appear before the Court in person as directed." The sentence was handed down in the Circuit Court of the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit of Illinois in DuPage County.

The source who provided the Criminal Sentence Order says that Bill Brady is fully aware of Wojtowicz's behavior. "Brady is afraid of Catherina," said our source, "which is why she's still working for his campaign." It was not specified whether Brady is afraid of being slandered by Wojtowicz or considers her to be a potential physical threat.

Wojtowicz was accused by blogger Chuck Jines of Streetwise Pundi of threatening to shoot him(Note/Update: The Streetwise Pundit has removed and/or lost all references to Catherina Wojtowicz, but see the related note about this below.)

Wojtowicz's group was once part of the Tea Party Patriots Illinois until it was kicked out and excommunicated in 2009 for bad behavior in a notorious incident at a town hall meeting by U.S. Rep Dan Lipinski (D-IL) on November 14, 2009. There, Wojtowicz's group heckled Midge Hough, whose 24-year old daughter in law died nine weeks before the meeting. The daughter in law's unborn baby died with her. She blamed the death on a lack of health insurance and made comments supportive of Obama's health care "reform." The Wojtowicz group then mocked her, bringing the woman to tears. A video of that town hall went viral and has gotten more than 120,000 views on YouTube. Midge Hough's portion begins at 1:47 into the video.

I, too, am against "Obamacare." However, like 99.9999% of my fellow Tea Partiers, I would never heckle a political opponent by mocking the death of a loved one. That's not right. It is disgusting behavior and goes counter to the beliefs and morals of the Tea Party movement. The behavior of rogues like Catherina Wojtowicz is not typical of the movement, but gives a lot of fuel to those who try to paint us as savage cretins. We are not, but there are bad apples in every basket. We must toss them out like the rotten fruit that they are.

NOTE: Do not confuse the outcast "Chicago Tea Patriots" with the legitmate "Tea Party Patriots Chicago" (TPPC), a legitimate and authentic chapter of Illinois Tea Party Patriots (ITPP). They, in turn, are part of the nationwide Tea Party Patriots. This should not be difficult to remember: Wojtowicz's group does not have the word "Party" in its name.

Even without her illegal bullying tactics, Wojtowicz is an embarassment to the Tea Party movement, as noted by Capital Fax. But Wojtowicz unwittingly demonstrates her own bizarre mentality daily in her weird postings on Twitter. One of my favorites is this:
Log cabin drop out, @chinewsbench, fronts 4 boytoy steve. ChicagoTeaPatriots sells most tix of all! http://tiny.cc/ChicagoTeaHostsGlennBeck 10:24 PM Sep 6th via web
For the record, I have no boytoy. I am not gay. I've never been a member of the Log Cabin Republicans. Not that there would anything wrong with that, mind you.

NOTE: Chuck Jines is "Streetwise Pundit" and he has multiple blogs, including "Republic Affair." On April 11, 2011, he posted this at republicaffair.com, in a criticism of the Tea Party movement:

"Then we have the Glenn Beck show with its own brand of crazy,  followed by the strange history of David Barton that causes most people to scratch their heads in bewilderment.  Here in Chicago we even have our own local crazy with, Catherina Wojtowicz, who threatened to shoot me in the head, and has gone on to build a history of harassment and strange behavior."

On Sept. 20, 2011, Jines claimed on Republic Affair that "StreetWisePundit was hacked and I lost years worth of content" and added "This is what I was able to recover on ol’ Catherina Wojtowicz. Chicago Tea Party Leader Threatens to Shoot Blogger." He then reproduced the text from that 2009 post. You can see it at this page. But here's the weird part: When I searched for "Wojtowicz" on Streetwise Pundit on May 27, 2012, it produced nothing. It seems very odd that the Wojtowicz update was not added to Streetwise Pundit, and that all reference to her was, apparently, removed.

The Goofy Protesters at Right Nation 2010

As attendees were still on their way into the Sears Centre Arena to enjoy the big gathering of conservatives, these protesters suddenly popped out of a yellow school bus. Their signs were all "hand made," but were curiously all in the same handwriting. Some of those signs said, "Stop the Hate!" Then, suddenly, a box of flags was broken out and voila, they were all holding identical, brand new U.S. flags! (Click image to enlarge) Andrew Brietbart confronted them. He challenged them to name "just one" example hate by the conservatives in RN2010. They couldn't, he said. One protester told Breitbart, "I don't want to get caught up in your trap." The protesters jumped back on the bus and vanished as quickly as they had materialized. They were only here for moments, and provided nothing more than laughs for the folks here.

Lunch With Anita MonCrief, Dick Armey at Right Nation 2010

The Right Nation 2010 bloggers had lunch with three heroes of the conservative movement today. It's part of the Activist Training Conference segment of RN2010 at the Marriott Chicago Northwest, which preceeds this evening's huge convention featuring Glenn Beck and Andrew Brietbart. Anita MonCrief is a former ACORN staff member-turned-whistleblower. She talked about her days with ACORN and the corruption and voter fraud that she witnessed while part of that organization. After lunch, Anita is a featured speaker at one of the seminars. Hers is concentrating on election fraud and how to recognize and fight it. Dick Armey, a former Congressman from Texas (18 years of service) and the current chairman of Freedom Works, added his usual dose of down-home humor to a brief talk that spanned a wide spectrum of topics. Like Anita MonCrief, he is also concerned about voter fraud. "If there's a Democrat in the race," he said, "you can expect at least five percent voter fraud." Armey cautioned that current "heroes" of the conservative movement cannot "do it alone" and that they need your support.

The Bloody Gutter of N. Kenmore Avenue

Blood flowed in the 4600 block of N. Kenmore at 4:00 a.m. this morning (see full story here). It quickly congealed, of course, but it flowed again hours latet at 9:05 a.m. when the Chicago Fire Department stopped by to spray down the reddened pavement. This is the usual procedure when the streets or sidewalks are stained with blood -- unceremoniously hose it down. It was off the street and into the gutter, but the process aerosolized it. The air on Kenmore, however briefly, was literally bloody.

Analysis: Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr's Opponent Demands His Resignation

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) told an interesting tale to Don Wade and Roma this morning on WLS 890 AM. Jackson talked about a meeting he had very recently with Rahm Emanuel, who is considered likely to run for mayor of Chicago. The real news, however, is Jackson speaking of himself as a potential candidate. Keep in mind that Jackson is currently running for re-election to Congress in the 2nd Congressional District. Listen to the entire phone call, as broadcast on WLS.

Jackson's opponent, Republican nominee Isaac Hayes, was quick to pounce on the congressman's remarks. The Hayes release is reproduced below, which I've interspersed with my comments and additional excerpts from the Jackson phone call to WLS.

HAYES URGES JACKSON TO RESIGN AND STOP THE EMBARRASSMENT September 17, 2010 - Chicago - Republican nominee for Illinois 2ndCongressional District Isaac Hayes today urged Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. to resign. Jesse Jackson Jr., speaking on WLS radio’s “Don Wade & Roma” show this morning about an Oct. 28, 2008, meeting with two Indian fund-raisers said, "another gentleman showed up and started having another conversation practically in Hindu, because I don't speak Hindu." He went on to say, "I didn't participate in any of that part of the conversation, nor do I even remember hearing it."

Jesse Jackson, Jr.
COMMENT:
Don Wade pointed out that the second Rod Blagojevich trial will be in early January, at the peak of the mayoral election campaign (the election itself is on Feb. 22, 2011). Wade then brought up the alleged case of an Indian businessman offering one million dollars to Blagojevich in return for naming Jackson to the U.S. Senate seat that was ultimately given to Roland Burris.

Federal prosecutors indicated that they thought Jackson was aware of, as Wade put it, "the efforts by his allies to swap campaign cash for his appointment to the Senate seat." That led Wade to ask Jackson, "Were you sitting down with some important Indian businessman in a Loop restaurant.... [having a] discussion over money for you to get that Senate seat?"

In response, Jackson said, "Let me be clear about this," but went on to give an answer that only caused more confusion - and further damage to his credibility. He acknowledged that both his name and Rahm Emanuel's name came up in the first Blago trial, and that "I'm not on any tapes, uhm, but he is. But neither one of us has been accused of any wrongdoing. In addition to that, I'm not alone in the meeting."

Jackson said he did meet with the Indian and others at the restaurant "for 30 minutes, in the presence of other people, and discussed the third airport when another gentleman showed up and began having a conversation practically in Hindu, because I don't speak Hindu or Swarmi, and I did not participate in any part of that part of the conversation, nor do I even remember hearing it." I believe that Jackson lied through his teeth, and I'll explain why after we finish with the Hayes press release:

Hayes responded with perplexity to the Congressman's statement, “If Congressman Jackson wants us to believe that he participated in a meeting with Indian businessmen who discussed a $1 million bribe on his behalf but failed to tell him about it, he needs to have his head examined because it is clear he lacks the cognitive capacity to serve as a United States Congressman. He should resign now and save himself further embarrassment.”

Jackson said he did meet with the Indian and others at the restaurant "for 30 minutes, in the presence of other people, and discussed the third airport when another gentleman showed up and began having a conversation practically in Hindu, because I don't speak Hindu or Swarmi, and I did not participate in any part of that part of the conversation, nor do I even remember hearing it."

One of the participants in the same meeting, Rajinder Bedi, testified at Blagojevich’s trial that Jackson was sitting with him and another fund-raiser, Raghuveer Nayak, when the $1 million was discussed. Bedi, a government witness, did not say he was speaking in Hindu. Bedi then testified he paid a visit later that same day to Rod Blagojevich’s brother, Robert, and passed along a message that the then-governor would receive campaign money if Jackson were appointed.

Back to my comments. You'll recall that Jackson said he with the Indian and others at the restaurant "in the presence of other people," which he later called "witnesses." He was saying that had he done anything wrong, those "witnesses" would know about it. The logic flaw there is simple: Al Capone had plenty of meetings in which he plotted illegal activities "in the presence of other people," and everyone at those tables was always a "witness."

This statement by Jackson is completely devoid of any real meaning. It's a red herring, a diversion, a smoke screen. This makes me believe that Jackson is lying. Furthermore, he claims innocence by virtue of not being on any of the Blagojevich trial tapes. But how many conservations, in which crime is plotted, are actually ever taped? The lack of tape does not mean a lack of guilt. Again, more smoke.

Jackson not only shows himself to be a bad liar, but an ignorant, uncultured fool. He said that "another gentleman showed up and began having a conversation practically in Hindu, because I don't speak Hindu or Swarmi." That is sadly amusing. "Hindu" is a religion, not a language. Jackson probably meant to say "Hindi," India's official language and one of many spoken there. As for "Swarmi," there doesn't seem to a language anywhere by that name. Was Jackson thinking of "swami?" That's "a Hindu religious teacher; used as a title of respect," according to Princeton University's Wordnet

There is one more reason to believe that Jackson was lying on WLS. He went to some length to say that he "did not participate in any part of that part of the conversation" in which one of the men was speaking "Hindu or Swarmi." Oddly, however, Jackson said of that portion of the meeting "nor do I even remember hearing it." Really? He has no recollection of hearing it, yet he's certain it was in "Hindu or Swarmi?" Now, how can that be? Anybody?

Pollak, Robinson Team Up For "Super Sunday" Campaign

Joel Pollak and Adam Robinson are getting together to do a big literature distribution push on Chicago's north side. They are seeking to pull 40 people off their easy chairs for this neighborhood walking event to cover the entire 7th State Senate district in one day. Joel Pollak and Adam Robinson are Republican nominees for office. Robinson (right) is running against incumbent Heather Steans (D) for Illinois State Senate in the 7th State Senate District. Pollak (left) is running against incumbent Jan Schakowsky (D) for Congress in the 9th Congressional District. The 7th State Senate District is within the 9th Congressional District. Volunteers are urged to join the district-wide canvassing effort on Sunday, September 19th. They need drivers to help transport volunteers in their effort to canvass 500 households. If you can't drive, the campaigns help volunteers get hooked up with a driver and canvassing team. This is two events in one: One group will meet at the Starbucks at 5300 N. Clark Street (at W. Berwyn on Sunday at Noon and will canvass until 4:00 p.m. Each driver will be given a map and a list of addresses by his or her team captain. Each driver will then guide a squad of volunteers as they deliver the Pollak and Robinson campaign literature. The other group will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Pollak Campaign Office at 8722 W. Dempster, Niles (sign up here). They will use the same game plan and will work until somtime between 3-4:00 p.m. Best part: There will be a party afterward at 4:00 p.m. at the Pollak Campaing Office.

Republican Election Judges Needed to Fight Democrat Voter Fraud

With a current shortage of Republican Election Judges, the Dems will try to steal votes yet again. Democrats love to steal elections. It's historical fact. Heck, it's an ongoing bad joke in Chicago and other big cities: Dead people voting as registered Democrats, Republicans mysteriously showing up on voter lists as Democrats or Independents, illegal aliens voting, and so on. We still wondering where a ballot box disappeared to in the April, 2007 aldermanic run-off election in Chicago's 49th Ward - and what Alderman Joe Moore's goons did with it for several hours before it reappeared without explanation. With all of that in mind, the following message from the Chicago Republican Party is especially important: A desperate Chicago Democrat Machine will be down to its last ditch strategy: steal the election in Cook County. But YOU can help stop them! Your Republican Party in Chicago and suburban Cook is very short of Election Judges for polling places on Election Day, November 2, 2010. If these positions are not filled by “real” Republicans by next Monday, September 20, 2010, the Republican Judge slots will be filled at random by those applying over the counter at the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners and the Cook County Clerk’s office. These people are not required to be actual Republicans, and few if any will be. Any remaining slots in the City will be filled by Chicago Aldermen for the respective Wards. You can count on those “Republican” judges to be Democrat hacks.

Hold on a minute: That bit about fake "Republican" judges is true. On July 14, 2010, Canada Free Press wrote that "American Thinker published an article by Lee Cary about an interview with a Chicago political machine insider. It contained the following warning: 'In Chicago, the Precinct Captains watch to see who votes and who doesn’t. Then, at the end of the day, others will cast votes for those who haven’t shown up to vote, all under the direction of the Precinct Captain. If the actual voter shows up later, they’re given someone else’s card. The Republican poll watchers don’t stop this. Hell, most of them are actually Democrats'."

Allegations that Ald. Moore's campaign committee committed ballot fraud, mail fraud and bribery still float around Chicago. Local bloggers published a picture of Moore standing right next to a person as they were voting in 2007 (photo, left), a clear violation of election law. Moore is hardly the only Democrat in Chicago who plays dirty.

[Back to the Chicago Republican Party message:] Can you serve as an Election Judge in your neighborhood on November 2, to change Illinois forever for the better? Judges of Election conduct the voting in their precinct. Every candidate on the ballot, and every voter in the state, depends on you to do your job well. It is a long day, from about 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., but you earn $125 from the government, and more If you receive official training. The greatest satisfaction is a country served, a community protected from fraud and a republic finally moving in the right direction. If you can serve, or would like to hear more, please contact us at info@chicagogop.com, or call Peter Bella, Executive Director of the Chicago Republican Party at 773-235-9467. Thank you! Oak Lawn’s “Careless Vote” Heats Up Red Light Protests

Cook County Red Light Camera Protests Continue Saturday CHICAGO – September 16, 2010 – Undeterred by a disappointing red light camera vote this week in Oak Lawn, Cook County Campaign for Liberty activists and concerned citizens will again take to the streets Saturday at an 11 a.m. planned protest at the intersection of Devon and Northwest Highway in Chicago. Organizers aim to raise awareness of the proven ineffectiveness and corruption of Cook County’s red light camera program in the second in a series of public actions planned for this fall. The event will cap a week that saw the village of Oak Lawn on Tuesday unanimously renew its red light camera contract with a five-year extension despite strong public opposition. Trustee Jerry Hurckes reported to the village board receiving multiple calls on the issue, all of which were in opposition to red light cameras. “Despite public disapproval, Oak Lawn officials did not blink as they roped local taxpayers into another long-term scheme with a failed, fraudulent technology,” said Scott Davis, Cook County Campaign for Liberty coordinator. “This careless vote is yet another stark reminder of our elected officials’ warped priorities – bottom-line tax receipts chief among them. Residents are an afterthought, at best. “Clearly, we must step up our red light advocacy efforts to promote real safety and oppose these unjust taxes.” Cook County Campaign for Liberty’s protests are part of a continuing backlash against unmanned traffic enforcement technology in Illinois. Stunned Cook County municipalities balked in June after the county board unilaterally voted to install 30 additional red light cameras countywide. Facing public outcry, Cook County subsequently permitted municipalities to opt out of the program. High-profile efforts by Schaumburg activists, led by the Schaumburg Freedom Coalition, forced the village to abandon its lucrative red light camera program in 2009. A measure to ban most red light and speed cameras statewide even made it to Springfield last legislative session in form of State Sen. Dan Duffy’s SB 2466. A 2007 study by the University of Illinois Chicago conducted by Professor Rajiv Shah concluded that red light cameras in Chicago actually increased accidents by 6 percent. The City of Chicago, which saw $63 million in fines from red light cameras in 2009, strongly challenged Shah’s findings. For more information about Cook County Campaign for Liberty’s protest schedule, which will culminate in a downtown rally in late October, visit http://www.chicagobanthecams.com or contatct Scott Davis at 630-544-0847 - scott.m.davis@gmail.com RELATED: Matt Harrington's Red Light Camera Letter to IL Senate Committee Recommends Sweeping Changes (Full Text)

Democrats For Bill Brady

Will any Democrats vote for Bill Brady over Pat Quinn in the Illinois gubernatorial election this November? You betcha, according to Carol Felsenthal, who wrote about this for Chicago Magazine's online edition. "A friend called to tell me that Democrats are secretly supporting conservative Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady," Felsenthal wrote, "because they predict he’ll be a one-termer. So they’ll grit their teeth for four years and then run a Democrat (who is not Pat Quinn) who can keep the office for multiple terms." Ah, but that's not the real meat of the story.... "Turns out my friend was half right. There are Democrats working for Brady; but they are working for Brady because, they say, he’s just what’s needed by the state of Illinois, which is teetering on fiscal insolvency. He’s a proven businessman, they say, while Pat Quinn is nice and well meaning but ineffectual and indecisive—the anti-businessman, so to speak." According to Felsenthal, there is a "ring leader" (two, actually) behind the Democrats for Brady movement. They are none other than the Vallas brothers - one whom is Paul, the former Chicago Public Schools Superintendent. He is currently the Recovery School District Superintendent in New Orleans. Felsenthal tells us that Paul Vallas has taken some heat for supporting Republican Brady. "When he threw his support to Brady," wrote Felsenthal, Vallas's friends asked him, "What are you, Karl Rove?" The full story can be read at ChicagoMag.com.

Hayes Has Plan To Bring Jobs To IL 2nd Cong. District

Chicago - Republican nominee for Illinois 2nd Congressional District Isaac Hayes released the following "Jobs Plan" to create employment and economic development. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. continues to sell the citizens of Illinois Second District the promise of “the airport is coming.” Sixteen years later we are still waiting. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for some in the Second District exceeds 30%. We need someone who can do more than one thing at a time. People need jobs today, not ten years from now. More specifically, the Second District needs jobs in the Second District and not the Eleventh District. While the airport could certainly bring some regional investment, the residents of South Shore and Hegewisch need jobs in Chicago and not Peotone. I have long called for incentivizing manufacturing jobs to our district. Because of the failed policies of the last sixteen years, the Pullman community has suffered through a 30% unemployment rate. Today, they have hope of economic development because of the recently approved Wal-Mart - which I supported from the beginning. This development will bring $1 billion in investment and 12,000 jobs. However, we need more than Wal-Mart. Pullman was once a manufacturing powerhouse and can once again help America become a producer-nation by manufacturing green technology. This site once provided 12,000 jobs. Chicago Heights is another community in the Second District that has experienced unemployment upwards of 20%. I have supported this community as a prime location for one of President Obama’s clean coal plants from the 2009 Recovery Act that would bring $1 billion in investment and 2,000 jobs. [Editor's Note: See "Gangs, Crime, and Unemployment"at ProgressIllinois.] For the past 16 years the members of the South Shore Community have experienced poverty, failing schools and gang violence. This community houses the former U.S. Steel South Works facility. Through tax incentives we can bring manufacturing jobs back to this site. U.S. Steel once employed close to 20,000 people. Instead of using TIF dollars we can provide companies who move to economically distressed communities like South Shore with a lower tax rate as an incentive to bring jobs to our district. America has the second highest corporate tax rate in the world at 38%. I support lowering that rate to 25% for companies that are willing to invest in under-served communities. Expediting the I-57 connection to I-94 will also bring an economic boon to the communities of Dixmoor, Harvey and Posen. It is a clear choice for the members of the Second District. Wait for an airport in another Congressional district and hope to get a few of the promised jobs, or support a vision to bring twice that number right to our own district. This is in addition to my plan to encourage entrepreneurship by waiving federal taxes on small businesses for one year. I can do more than one thing at a time and my Jobs Plan is comprehensive. More importantly, those jobs will be right in the Second District and not 35 miles away. Contact: Janet D. Restivo - janet@isaac4honesty.com - 312-504-4085

Joel Pollak Holding Town Hall Meeting on Sept. 16

PARK RIDGE, IL - Joel Pollak, Republican candidate for the 9th Congressional district of Illinois, will hold his third town hall meeting on Thursday, September 16th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The meeting is open to all, will be held in Park Ridge at the South Park Recreation Center at 833 Talcott Ave. The meeting will be hosted by FOX News Contributor and radio host on Chicago’s WYLL radio, Sandy Rios. “While Jan Schakowsky mocks with derision and laughs with glee at the thought of destroying the American healthcare system, Joel Pollak brings a serious and able intellect to restoring it. This long ago ceased to be a battle between Republicans and Democrats...it is a fight for the survival of the nation,” said Rios, who is the President of Culture Campaign. “Destructive Leftists like Jan Schakowsky must go and candidates who will fight FOR this country like Joel Pollak must prevail.” A serious challenger to decades of single party domination, Joel is offering a fresh start, well-conceived, practical, non-ideological solutions to the problems of our time—recession, pervasive joblessness, escalating government debt, increasingly brazen foreign enemies and increasingly anxious foreign friends. This town hall is one of a series for Joel to hear what is on the minds of all the voices in this diverse district that ranges from Evanston to Des Plaines. At previous town halls in Evanston and Skokie, he fielded hard questions and sometimes passionate arguments from both supporters and devotees of his opponent. On the massive unemployment in the nation in the district, Joel advocated the following positions: “Job creation must be Congress’s most urgent priority. I will propose an investment tax credit and lower business taxes and capital gains taxes to help businesses invest in new capital to create new jobs. . . I will oppose laws and government interference that hurts economic recovery and destroy jobs. . . We need to show entrepreneurs that the U.S. is once again a nation committed to free enterprise, job creation and economic growth.” Joel will answer every question, down to the very last one. Like previous town halls, this promises to be a packed house. The above is from a Pollak For Congress press release, Sept. 14, 2010 For further information, contact Shalom Klein: shalom@pollakforcongress.com or 773-547-3822

Terrorists Suspected of Spreading Anthrax in Bangladesh

Authorities in Bangladesh and neighboring India (map) fear that anthrax is being deliberately spread in Bangladesh. It is widespread and spreading fast. Very fast. "The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) confirmed on Thursday [Sept. 9, 2010] that 447 people in eight districts had been infected with anthrax in the last three weeks. IEDCR virologist A.S.M. Alamgir said treatment facilities had been made available in all affected areas and claimed more than half the infected people had already been cured." More at The Hindu... As of Sept. 10, the total has risen to 479 people who are know to be infected. The outbreak began on August 18 in the Sirajganj district of central Bangladesh (map) contracted anthrax by consuming beef from infected cattle. Blitz Magazine (online) reports that "Eight districts have confirmed human and cattle anthrax infections and meat consumption ahead of the Islamic festival of Eid. Health officials in Bangladesh have described the Anthrax outbreak as biggest in country's history. The disease was first detected last month in northwestern Sirajganj district, where 38 villagers reportedly became infected after consuming beef from sickened cows, the news agency reported. It then spread to neighboring districts... But Is This Terrorism? Blitz: "Counter-terrorism experts fear that, Anthrax germs might have been intentionally put on animals in certain areas in Bangladesh by one or few of the separatist and militancy groups to create a massive headache for the current government in Bangladesh. It is also suspected that the spread of Anthrax might have connection with trial of war criminals in the country, which has already put Islamist group like Jamaat-E-Islami into visible offensives from the government. A number of top ranking Jamaat leaders are already behind the bar and books of spiritual guide of this Islamist group, Moulana Abul Ala Moududi have already been banned in Bangladesh." This is not the first time that Bangladesh has had an outbreak of anthrax. In April, 2010 there was a small group of 11 people who became infected. The suspected cause in that case was a diseased cow. According to The Daily Star (Dhaka, Bangladesh), "All the patients were attacked with the disease at Gala village in Ghatail upazila. Villagers said, Sujat Ali slaughtered one his sick cows and processed the meat with the help of his family members and several neighbours on April 6 last and distributed the meat among his relatives and others." The huge scale of the current outbreak, with nearly 500 people infected, is suspicious and provides reason to suspect terrorism. Then again, it may simply be that a number of infected cows were slaughtered and sold as meat. BioPrepWatch.com reports that the cause "was traced to anthrax-affected cows that were sold for meat to nearby villagers. All of the reported infections so far have been cutaneous [on the skin] and no deaths have been reported." A big part of the problem is the "jurisdictional mess" and "inspector shortage" in Bangladesh. In another article, The Daily Star reported that "the government directed livestock department officials to remain on highest alert to prevent spread of anthrax," but it's not working as it should becasue "the efforts seem to be dogged down by a lack of proper coordination among different relevant agencies, and an acute shortage of veterinary inspectors." (Updated) Photos of Chicago's 9/12 Rally With Joel Pollak

The turnout was small, but the message was big: Smaller government, less interference in our lives by politicians, lower taxes, and... well, you get the idea. Updated: See "Post Script" below. Also: Chicago Tea Party 9/12 rally photo essay at Marathon Pundit There were about 300 people at today's 9/12 Rally, sponsored by Chicago Tea Party. Slideshow below! It's hard to compete with the first day of the official NFL season, and I'm sure a lot of people were enjoying one more good weather weekend of the season. Adam Andrzejewski of For The Good Of Illinois gave a great speech, as always. Rogers Keats, as always, gave a lackluster speech. The real star of the show was Joel Pollak, candidate for U.S. Congress, IL-9. He's running against incumbent Jan Schakowsky, and that's the reason why the Chicago Tea Party had their event up in Morton Grove: That's Schakowsky Country. Pollak's speech was strong. He's a dynamic speaker, and he did not disappoint. "We must win in districts like this one," he told the crowd with wife Julia behind him on stage, "because this is Ground Zero in the struggle for American freedom today. Jan Schakowsky is the most extreme left-wing member of Congress. She is also the number one biggest spender in the House of Representatives, costing each family in America an extra $10,000 per year. She is the worst in the House on economic growth and national security. She represents the worst of Washington." The crowd clapped and cheered, and Pollak pushed on. "Like many ideologues, Jan Schakowsky is a hypocrite. She attacks big banks and oil companies, but she owns shares in them through her extensive mutual fund portfolio. She wants to raise taxes on the rich, but she just took a private plane on her summer vacation. She even breaks her promises to her liberal constituents. She promised to vote against a health care bill without a public option, but voted for it in the end anyway." Read the entire speech here... Julia Pollak also gave a good speech. With husband Joel standing behind her on stage, she talked about growing up in South Africa and seeing discrimination at its worst. Julia is a U.S. Navy reservist and spoke about why she loves the United States. "I am proud to be here with you today–as a black woman, as a Jewish woman, as an immigrant, and as a future sailor in the U.S. Navy Reserve. I signed up for the Navy for the simple reason that I want to defend freedom, and because I know that the U.S. armed forces are the greatest force for freedom in the world today. I value that freedom, and I do not want to see it destroyed by enemies abroad or bad government at home. "I grew up in South Africa. When I was born, black people could not vote. I was born in a segregated hospital for “coloured” people. I was turned away from public schools that were set aside for “whites only.” My mother was part of the struggle against apartheid. I remember the day when she voted for the first time. Nelson Mandela appointed her to be on South Africa’s human rights commission. We fought for, and believed in, freedom. "I am not yet a citizen. I am a legal immigrant. Soon, hopefully, I will take my citizenship test. One of the questions on that test is as follows–number 41: “Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the federal government. What is one power of the federal government?” There are only four correct answers: 'A: to print money; B: to declare war; C: to create an army; D to make treaties.' That’s it! Anything else is the wrong answer! "Today, in Chicago and across the nation, people are gathering to support the Tea Party because we know we have to stop what is happening in Washington. We have to stop spending money we don’t have. We have to stop apologizing to regimes that oppress their own people. We have to stand up for the U.S. Constitution and for the American people and our future. That is why I am here with you today, together with my husband." Read all of Julia Pollak's speech here... POST SCRIPT: A reader left this simple-minded comment: "Suppose they gave a tea party and nobody came." Well now, that would be strange. I'd hardly call 300 people "nobody." The commenter is obviously a Lefty. Perhaps they're envious of the strength of the Tea Party movement. Perhaps they're fearful of it. Probably, it's both. The commenter probably knows too well that the Tea Party continues to grow even as the much weaker "Coffee Party" displays a flacid impotence on the political stage. To wit, an article from the California Independent Voter Network (CIVN). Excerpts: The Tea Party’s ability to make a noticeable presence in Sacramento says something about the movement’s ability to resonate with voters. It will be intriguing to see how much the Tea Party can chip away from the Democratic vote in California come the 2010 midterm elections.... Meanwhile, while the Tea Party movement seems to continue gaining strength, alternatives to the Tea Party movement seem to be quite weak. For instance, while the Coffee Party may have skyrocketed to nearly 300,000 members on their Facebook group, they have yet to hold a rally as big as the recent 9/12 events or even as large as the Glenn Beck “Restoring Honor” rally held in D.C. just a few weeks ago.
