Hallelujah! Ald. Sandi Jackson Quits Chicago City Council

They're creepy and they're kooky: The Jackson Family
Photo: Sandi Jackson for 7th Ward Alderman campaign
Jan. 11, 2013 - Sandi Jackson, wife of former Congressman Jesses Jackson, Jr. has - finally - resigned. Goodbye to bad rubbish. She will no longer be the alderman for Chicago's 7th Ward. According to the Chicago Tribune, she submitted her resignation letter "to Mayor Rahm Emanuel today. It is effective Tuesday," January 15. Jackson was first elected to the city council in 2007. In her letter to Emanuel, she cited "very painful family health matters" as a major factor in her decision to resign.

Emanuel took time to praise her in a statement he released in response to her resignation:

"As Sandi takes this time to focus on her family, we give her our deepest thanks and support for her service to our City and the residents of her ward. Her leadership has been greatly appreciated in the Chicago City Council."

"Leadership?" What leadership, Mr. Mayor? Sandi Jackson seemed to care more about living it up in D.C. than she cared about representing her own ward. How was she leading from 700 miles away?

Gold Coast Jihadi: Feds Arrest Chicago Man In Terror Plot

August 4, 2010 - From ABC7 Chicago: For nearly two years, counterterrorism agents in Chicago say they have been secretly following a 26-year old Streeterville man as he planned and plotted to become a global Jihadist and even dreamed of executing a suicide bomb attack on American soldiers. After determining that Masri had airplane tickets to leave Chicago this morning to carry out his mission, federal authorities say they stopped Masri and arrested him.... Masri is an American citizen born in Alabama according to details in a 24-page FBI affidavit unsealed Wednesday. From AP via MercuryNews.com: Federal prosecutors say a 26-year-old Chicago man was plotting to go to Somalia to become a suicide bomber with al-Qaida. Shaker Masri (shah-KEER' MAHZ'-ree) was charged Wednesday with attempting to aid a terrorist organization and use a weapon of mass destruction outside the United States. Authorities contend Masri told an FBI informant of his plans and asked the informant for money to help buy guns once they got there. According to WBEZ radio in Chicago, "Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown set the next hearing date for Monday, Aug. 9.If convicted, Masri could face up to 30 years in prison." • How Cook County Townships Waste Your Money

EXCLUSIVE BGA / ABC 7 NEWS INVESTIGATION: HOW TOWNSHIPS WASTE YOUR MONEY THE TAXING FACTS ABOUT TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT Chicago - November 26, 2009 - The Better Government Association and ABC 7 News have joined together to expose massive waste and mismanagement by the Townships of Cook County. Fed up and frustrated taxpayers can be grateful on this Thanksgiving holiday that the truth about this antiquated and highly-politicized layer of government is finally being told. BGA Executive Director Andy Shaw said, "The State of Illinois has more layers of government than any other state in the union and Cook County Townships are a seldom scrutinized bureaucracy spending millions of your tax dollars with virtually zero oversight. Until now, nobody's paid attention and taxpayers just continue to pay the bills with no questions asked. Today, the BGA, in an historic partnership with ABC's I-Team, are working to change that equation. We believe it is time for taxpayers to find out if townships are an unnecessary and unproductive drain on our limited resources." The BGA and ABC 7's Investigative Reporter Chuck Goudie combed through reams of data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act to reveal what few people have seen before. Working with a BGA forensic accountant, we are shedding light on where your money is being spent and how it is being wasted. We've assembled an interactive map and we're making a complete payroll database public because we think you should know what your government is doing or not doing. •Should it cost $50,000 to maintain one mile of road? •Should dozens of townships employ assessors at a cost of hundreds of thousands of tax dollars when those township assessors do NO assessments? •Should an Illinois State Senator making over $88,000 a year be paid an additional $70,000 a year to be Stickney Township Supervisor -- a part-time job? •Should the townships provide do-little jobs for friends, families and supporters of politicians? THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO LEARN MORE & HELP US STOP THESE ABUSES: 1. Go to BetterGov.org and use our interactive map to see what your township is up to. We've provided the name, telephone number and e-mail address for each of the township supervisors so you can speak out and tell them what you think about what the BGA and ABC 7 discovered during our ongoing investigation. 2. Watch ABC 7's video. 3. Go to BetterGov.org and click on Payroll Database to see the entire township employee payroll. While you are there, sign up to join the BGA in our fight to eliminate waste, fraud, corruption, malfeasance and mismanagement from all levels of our government. Updated: Jesse Jackson Jr Under Investigation

UPDATE: "A congressional ethics board has launched a preliminary inquiry into U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), related to President Obama's vacant Senate seat and the corruption investigation of ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.".... Is "the Man" trying to keep Jesse Jackson, Jr. down? No, I'm not talking about Senator Harry Reid blocking the appointment of three black men by Blagojevich last year to fill Obama's empty Senate seat, and instead pushing two white women. No, I'm referring to the ongoing federal Blagojevich corruption case, in which Jackson stands immersed up to his chin. Back in December, the Congressman Jackson (and a gaggle of other Illinois Democrats) was very busy denying any involvement in Rod Blagojevich's corruption "crime spree." The "spree" included the alleged attempted sale of Obama's vacated US Senate seat, for which Blagojevich was recently indicted. New developments, as reported in the April 7 edition of the Chicago Sun-Times, indicate that Jackson's denials were not enough to make the federal investigators lose interest in him: Federal authorities have asked U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson (D.-Ill) why former Gov. Rod Blagojevich believed he would get campaign cash in exchange for appointing Jackson to President Obama's vacant Senate seat, sources told the Sun-Times. More than a week ago, Jackson and his criminal defense lawyer sat down for an interview with investigators in connection with the ongoing corruption probe of the now-indicted Blagojevich. (Chicago Sun-Times) Junior's daddy, the "Reverend" Jesse Jackson, would probably be accusing the feds of racism by now. Daddy has been curiously quiet about all of this, however, and the race card would be difficult to play anyway. Most of those under investigation or indictment in connection to the Blagojevich scandal are white, after all. The Sun-Times quotes Daddy as saying "I've stayed a respectful -- but supportive -- distance from his political work." That's rather uncharacteristic for Daddy Jackson, a man not exactly known for being shy about expressing himself publicly. The Sun-Times continues: But the charges against Blagojevich include an alleged scheme involving Jackson's possible appointment. The ex-governor [Blagojevich] believed he would receive $1.5 million in campaign money in exchange for appointing Jackson to the seat, according to the allegations. Now, why would Blago have believed that he would get $1.5 million from Jackson? The Southtown Star points out in its April 7 edition that "Jackson's recent interview took place nearly four months after he publicly announced he wasn't a target of the FBI investigation and said he expected to meet with agents in a few days. Jackson isn't accused of wrongdoing and has said he never gave anyone authority to trade cash for the appointment." On April 5, the Chicago Tribune also pointed out that federal investigators "say Blagojevich was approached by an associate of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) who offered $1.5 million in campaign contributions in exchange for Jackson's appointment to the seat." It's amusing to see, in every major report about Jackson, a reminder that Jackson has been accused of wrongdoing. I suppose that's the work of the media lawyers. The federal investigators, on the other hand, seems less reluctant to come right out and say that "Blagojevich was approached by an associate of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) who offered $1.5 million in campaign contributions." Are federal investigators imagining that a Jackson associate approached Blagojevich and offered $1.5 million for that senate seat? Was Blagojevich himself so confused that he misinterpreted an alleged offer of $1.5 million? Did the federal investigators, all of them, completely misunderstand what they heard on the recorded Blagojevich conversations? The April 5 Tribune report also said: Blagojevich is accused of telling his brother, Robert, who led his campaign fund and who also was indicted Thursday, to tell Oak Brook businessman Raghuveer Nayak to begin the fundraising effort in exchange for Jackson's appointment. Raghuveer Nayak MS, RPh was a major money man for Rod Blagojevich. He lives in Oak Brook, a wealthy western Chicago suburb, and he owns the Rogers Park One Day Surgery Center at 7616 N. Paulina in Rogers Park, a Chicago neighborhood on Lake Michigan and at Evanston's southern border. The Trib had the following on December 12, 2008 (emphasis added): As Gov. Rod Blagojevich was trying to pick Illinois' next U.S. senator, businessmen, including Raghuveer Nayak, with ties to both the governor and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. discussed raising at least $1 million for Blagojevich's campaign as a way to encourage him to pick Jackson for the job, the Tribune has learned. Imagination? Fabrication? The Man keeping Jackson down? Seems not, if you can believe that December 12 report from the Chicago Tribune: Blagojevich made an appearance at an Oct. 31 luncheon meeting at the India House restaurant in Schaumburg sponsored by Oak Brook businessman Nayak, a major Blagojevich supporter who also has fundraising and business ties to the Jackson family, according to several attendees and public records. Two businessmen who attended the meeting and spoke to the Tribune on the condition of anonymity said that Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi privately told many of the more than two dozen attendees the fundraising effort was aimed at supporting Jackson's bid for the Senate. Among the attendees was a Blagojevich fundraiser already under scrutiny by federal investigators, Joliet pharmacist Harish Bhatt. An excellent article by Prof. Vijay Prashad on December 31, 2008 gave deeper insight into the fundraiser attended by Nayak (emphasis added): On October 31 [2008], a Konkani businessman, Raghuveer Nayak, booked India House for a private party. He hosted luminaries of Chicago’s business community, people such as pharmacy owners Harish and Renuka Bhatt, hotelier Satish “Sonny” Gabhawala, and prominent political leaders of the Indian-American community, such as Babu Patel and Iftekhar Shareef (both past presidents of the Federation of Indian Associations). Nayak, also a former head of the Federation of Indian Associations, owns a group of surgical centres. A highly regarded Democratic Party fund-raiser, Nayak is also a friend of another person who attended the lunch, Rajinder Bedi, an aide to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (the Governor calls Bedi “My Sikh Warrior”). In addition, among the few who are not Indian American, the party included Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.’s brother Jonathan. Governor Blagojevich made a brief appearance. (CounterPunch) (Vijay Prashad bio) Prashad continued: On December 4, the Governor met with “Advisor B” (as he is named in the criminal complaint) and told him that “Senate Candidate 5” (Jesse Jackson Jr.) would get “greater consideration” because of a surety that No. 5 would help Blagojevich raise money and that he would give him “some [money] up front, maybe.” Blagojevich wanted something “tangible” now because “some of this stuff’s gotta start happening now… right now… and we gotta see it. You understand?” Is Jackson, Jr. innocent? That will be for the legal system to figure out. Is Jesse Junior accused of wrongdoing? Not officially. Are the federal investigators keenly suspicious of him? It certainly appears so. Do they have reason to be suspicious? Seems so. Will Junior eventually be "accused of wrongdoing?" You can probably bet on it, then place another bet that he'll strike a deal in return for his testimony and cooperation. The phrase "sing like a canary" comes to mind. Feds Target Chicago Alderman Carothers

Former Chicago Alderman Arenda Troutman (Democrat) was just sentenced to four years in prison for corruption. This morning, we noted that Troutman is just one more "long parade of Illinois and Chicago politicians" (as American Thinker put it) who have shamed Chicago and Illinois. The parade of clowns continues with 29th Ward Ald. Isaac Carothers, and his act promises to be even more entertaining than Troutman's. From today's Chicago Sun-Times (emphasis added): Last year, the Chicago Sun-Times disclosed that federal investigators had requested city records on four West Side zoning changes pushed by Carothers. He had received campaign contributions from two of the businesses seeking the changes. Now, a 2007 federal subpoena -- released in response to a Freedom of Information request -- reveals a demand for documents including seven years worth of aldermanic expense records; 29th Ward zoning changes; ordinances introduced by Carothers, and correspondence between Carothers and the mayor's office regarding zoning changes. This will be interesting to watch. In the meantime, when will Mr. Fitzpatrick please consider investigating 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore for similar alleged offenses? CNB RSS Feed

Exclusive Photos: Friends of Blagojevich Offices

This is the location of a Friends of Blagojevich office at 4147 N. Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago, 60613-2472. (Click picture to make it embiggered.) Chicago News Bench went there to grab some file photos on January 1, 2009. Lo and behold, 13 days later the Sun-Times reported that "Federal authorities used a video camera as part of their cache of tools to investigate Gov. Blagojevich in the final weeks of 2008 before his arrest, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned." Well well. The Sun-Times could have used CNB's photos of the place. (They didn't run any pix of the location.) Fortunately, our photographers did not have New Year's Day off. We are, after all, a non-union shop. Rest assured, however, that plenty of rum spiked egg nog was served to our photo team upon their return. "The camera, which likely was remote-controlled, was trained on the Friends of Blagojevich offices, 4147 N. Ravenswood, to help FBI agents identify individuals entering and leaving the campaign offices -- and to identify who was talking on bugs agents covertly planted inside." Full Story... Jesse Jackson, Jr.: Snitch

Well, well, well. The Bench said recently (as did a lot of others) that US Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s career was "toast" because of implications that he may have been involved in the ongoing Blagojevich corruption scandal. Well, well, well. We were right, but accidentally and for the wrong reasons. Let me explain. On Dec. 16, I wrote that Jackson "is protesting his innocence just a leeeetle bit too much," and I stand by that. However, I (nor you) knew not that Jackson has been acting as an informant for the US Attorney General's office. In other words, Jackson was narcing out his colleagues. Now, I'm all in favor of a guy risking his well being to root out corruption. (Did Jackson wear a wire?) It's not exactly like he was spying on the Mafia, but damned close. Rather than kill you outright, instead of smashing your knee caps, Illinois Democrats do worse - they destroy careers and reputations and, thereby, lives. (Death is permanent but relieves you of suffering. Democrat grudges last forever, lingering on for years and years until you die, and then after you die your name is eternally besmirched.) Assuming that Jackson was spying on fellow Democrats, why would he publicly blab about that? I mean, shouldn't he go into some kind of witness protection program? So, let's go back to the whole "his career is toast" thing. His career is burnt toast, crispier than previously thought. If Jackson is not shunned by fellow Democrats, from this moment on, it will be a surprise. Can you imagine Mayor Daley ever again confiding in him? Or Howard Dean? Or Rahm Emanuel? Or any other Democrat? "Hey Junior," they'll say with squinty-eyed smirks, "you wearing a wire? Maybe we oughta pat you down, you know?" According to the Guardian (UK), "In the latest development, a spokesman for Jackson told the Associated Press last night that Jackson has been talking to federal investigators about his dealings with Blagojevich before the latest scandal" and he "had told investigators about another alleged incident that predated the present scandal." (Source) The Guardian quoted ABC-7 Chicago, which reported that "since late last summer, the congressman has worked with federal prosecutors, informing on an alleged Blagojevich administration scheme two and half years earlier. The meeting in June of 2006 at a Gold Coast hotel included Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Blagojevich fundraiser Antoin 'Tony' Rezko." (Source) Okay, but... Why was Jackson doing this? Two possibilities immediately come to mind. First, that he was altruistically willing to risk his career in the Democrat Party to fight corruption. Second, that he might have been cooperating with the Feds in order to take the heat of off himself in a private deal. You know, like mafiosi do when they know the game is over and their only chance is to sell out their fellows. I'm not saying that this is what Jackson was up to, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. EbonyJet.com is even harsher on Jackson: Forgetting for the moment that Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s odd “I can’t be guilty because I’m a snitch” defense is just a bizarre addendum to an already bizarre case, why is it that nobody’s talking about the real oddity here? (Source) Good question, and EbonyJet asks more good questions (emphasis added): Forget all this hullabaloo about Blagojevich. Patrick Fitzgerald already said Jesse Jr. is not a subject of the investigation. So why is Jesse Jr. focusing on this so much and drawing attention to himself when he needs to be focused on the very serious career-damaging issue posed by my question above. What has he done or not done -or not achieved (at least in the minds of his colleagues)- during his tenure that would warrant a complete lack of consideration such as this? Jackson Junior is still protesting an awful lot for an innocent man. Suddenly, after letting his reputation be ravaged nationwide for days, he reveals through a spokesman late in the day that he's been a snitch for the feds. Suddenly, without full explanation, we're supposed to just accept that and not ask why he was a plant for The Man. Suddenly, Jackson not only still looks like an idiot, he now looks like a foolish idiot that none of his mostly-crooked fellow party hacks will ever trust again. Repeat: Jesse Jackson's career is toast. Pass the jam, Jesse, you can't win for losin'. Ask Supreme Court to Remove Joe Moore, Too

How is Governor Rod Blagojevich different from Alderman Joe Moore (Chicago, 49th Ward)? Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (Democrat) today asked the state's Supreme Court to prevent Governor Blagojevich from doing virtually any of the important functions of his office. Madigan wants to "make sure the people of Illinois have a governor who can legitimately fulfill the duties of that office." Blago has been charged by federal authorities with seeking cash in exchange for naming someone to Barack Obama's vacated US Senate seat. Keep in mind, however, that Blago has not been found guilty of anything. The case, still forming, has not even gone to court yet. In other words, Madigan acted against Blago because she believes he is guilty of corruption and because she feels that Blago cannot carry out his duties properly. She believes that the charges against Blago are so ugly that Blago should, in effect, be removed from office, if only temporarily. The feds have audio recordings of Blago and his top aides squeezing people for money in exchange for political favors. 49th Ward bloggers have published a photo of Joe Moore violating election law, shaking the hand of somebody while they are voting. Madigan believes Blagojevich is not capable of performing his duties. Residents of the 49th Ward know and see everyday that Moore is incapable of even getting a pile of gravel picked up. That pile of gravel has been partially obstructing a bus stop for nearly two years now. Madigan believes that charges against Blago are "severe," and so she is acting fast to contain the Governor. 49th Ward residents have severe charges against Moore, which include leaning on local developers for campaign donations, and more. Moore and Blagojevich are both Democrats. They are both cogs in the same Machine. They both engage, allegedly, in "pay to play" politics. Both have backers and promoters who are criminal scum, not the least of which is Robert Creamer, convicted felon husband of Cong. Jan Schakowsky, another Democrat. Madigan, and nearly every other Democrat in Illinois, is suddenly an avenging angel, surprised and shocked that Blago engaged in activities common to Illinois and Chicago political life. They are merely covering their asses, or trying to anyway, in a vain attempt to fool Illinoisans that they themselves are pure and never engage in such loathsome behavior. We know better, and we'd like to know why Madigan et al waited so damned long to this. We'd also like to know when she will ask the Supreme Court to remove the likes of Alderman Moore from their offices. Madigan says that Blago can no longer perform his duties "with any legitimacy." Last time we checked, Blago has not been charged with stealing an election. At least half the residents of the 49th Ward believe that Joe Moore stole his re-election in February, 2007. While we're at it, we'd like to know when federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald will put handcuffs on Mr. Moore. MUST READ: Is Fitzgerald Going Easy on Obama?

A must-read post by Christopher J. Adamo hints that Obama is being given more slack than he deserves. The giver of slack: Federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. With a speed vastly exceeding even Armitage’s confession of guilt, Fitzgerald has, without any two-year investigation of Blagojevich’s every acquaintance going back to kindergarten, already pronounced Obama entirely innocent and clear of any suspicion. The ugly picture painted by this affair reveals the decline and likely extinction of “old justice” in which right and wrong played the supreme role, as compared to its “new law” substitute, in which the legal system has become the ultimate tool by which the state manages the people. JESSE JACKSON POINT MAN POINTS FINGER

It seems that Jesse Jackson, Junior is not a squeaky clean, naive, totally innocent cherub, as he tried to portray himself yesterday. Jackson, referred to by Blago as "Senate Candidate 5" in the federal complaint against the Governor, has a suspicious past. CBS 2 Chicago reports today: Former city worker Frank Coconate was Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.'s Northwest Side point man when Jackson flirted with the idea of running against Mayor Daley. Now, Coconate says, he's not shocked by federal wiretaps in which Blagojevich discusses selling Barack Obama's Senate seat to someone described as a Jackson emissary. "He was always looking to deal," Coconate said. "If he couldn't get it outright, he'd buy it."... In short, Jackson's office was selling endorsements, Coconate said. He said the Jackson aide he dealt with is likely the one referred to in the Blagojevich case. Full Report...

    Jackson Emissary: Daddy Jesse

The Bench speculates: Jesse Jackson, Sr. is the "emissary" who approached Governor Blagojevich about naming Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) to fill the US Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama. Daddy Jesse, we believe, did that without his son's knowledge. Is Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. "Senate Candidate 5," one of the people that Blago referred to in secretly recorded phone conversations of the Governor? Junior says no. We say, not so fast. Yesterday, Junior joined a flurry of Democrats who tripped all over themselves in a rush to deny any involvement in Governor Rod Blagojevich's "crime spree," as federal prosecutors are calling it. The "spree" includes the alleged attempted sale of Obama's vacated US Senate seat. Junior's father, the "Reverend" Jesse Jackson, Sr., is a man with a long history of extorting money from corporations. Squeezing people is just business to Daddy Jesse. His ego is enormous and he would undoubtedly like to see Junior become a US Senator, which would enhance his potential to one day become a viable presidential contender. Daddy Jesse ran for president but failed miserably. Like a non-athletic father who lives vicariously through his son the high school football star, Jesse Jackson, Sr. has personal high hopes for Junior in the game of politics. We don't hold the sins of the father against the son, but Junior's tightly crafted denial yesterday of any involvement in Blago's Senate seat scandal was less than satisfying. In fact, it was not a complete denial. Excerpts from his remarks on Wednesday, with analysis: JACKSON, JR: "I want to make this fact plain: I reject and denounce pay-to-play politics and have no involvement whatsoever in any wrongdoing." ANALYSIS: Perhaps... JACKSON, JR: "I did not initiate nor authorize anyone -- at any time -- to promise anything -- to Governor Blagojevich on my behalf. I never sent a message or an emissary to the Governor to make an offer or to propose a deal about the U.S. Senate seat (period)." ANALYSIS: This may be strictly, literally true. However, notice that he never denies knowing about someone approaching Blago on his behalf. In other words, just because Jackson "did not initiate nor authorize anyone" to pitch him for the Senate seat, does not necessarily mean that he did not know that someone was doing it. Furthermore, Jackson stated that he "never sent a message or an emissary to the Governor" about it, but Jackson said nothing about sending a message or an emissary to any of the Governor's agents. Most importantly, Junior never said that he himself never made "an offer or to propose a deal about the U.S. Senate seat." He said nobody else did, but did not deny doing it himself. "I never sent a message" is not the same as saying "I never said." (If I hand you a gift, did I "send" that gift to you?) JACKSON, JR: "I thought -- mistakenly -- that the process was fair, above board and on the merits." ANALYSIS: Did Junior just land on Planet Earth last week? Merits? Since when did the Machine or the Combine care about merits? Is Jackson really not aware that during Blago's re-election campaign in 2006, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said publicly that Blago was being investigated for fraudulent hiring practices? Did Jackson miss the news that Tony Rezko, Blago's top fund-raiser and adviser from the 2002 election, was indicted on corruption charges? Did Junior miss all the coverage of the Rezko corruption trial? Did Junior not grow up with a father who is up to his buggy eyeballs in the corruption of Chicago and Illinois? Does Jackson really want us to believe that he is so naive about the nature of local political corruption? Is he really as naive as that? JACKSON, JR: "I wanted to be considered for the appointment because I believe in public service....That's what I shared with Governor Blagojevich on Monday, when I had the opportunity to meet with him for the first time in about four years. I presented my record, my qualifications and my vision. Despite what he may have been looking for, that's all I had to offer. And, that's what we discussed." ANALYSIS: That may be true (although I doubt it), but once again it does not present a specific denial. JACKSON, JR: "I spoke to the U.S. Attorney's office on Tuesday. They shared with me that I am NOT a target of the investigation and that I am NOT accused of any misconduct." ANALYSIS: Now, really, if Junior is a "a target of the investigation," and if he is being investigated, do you think Patrick Fitzgerald and his team would tell him that? Junior may not be accused of any misconduct at the moment, but as the investigation continues there is always the possibility that new charges will be brought against more individuals. JACKSON, JR: "In the days ahead, federal law enforcement officials want to meet and discuss what I know about the process." ANALYSIS: No doubt. It remains to be seen whether after Junior has met with the feds, he is still not accused of any misconduct. Junior did not mention his father in his remarks. Jesse Senior has enough contacts with deep pockets that he could, in theory, make an offer to Blago on behalf of his son. If that happened, it could have happened without Junior's knowledge. Blago: "Vengeful and profane"

Before he was arrested yesterday, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (Democrat) was well liked by something around 13 percent of Illinois voters. That's less than half the ratings for Pres. Bush, but still much higher than the ratings of Congress as a whole. The sad, weird, tragic yet sadistically funny events of Blago Tuesday have probably since lowered his favorability ratings to somewhere in the single digits. There are always die-hard supporters; even serial get offers of marriage while they're behind bars, and people still buy Michael Jackson albums. Even Michael Jackson, however, was never caught on tape calling colleagues motherf#@%ers, as Blagojevich was. Hearing Blago use nasty language was apparently shocking to many, perhaps especially to those not old enough to remember the raw Nixon Tapes, which were aired on network television uncensored. Nixon could swear like a sailor, but he pales in comparison to Blago the Foul. Yes, Blago was once the Golden Boy of the Illinois Democrats. But, as Susan Saulny explains in the International Herald Tribune, "Tuesday changed all that." Indeed. It was not simply the extortion and venality with which he was charged that left mouths gaping, but the ruthlessness and grandiosity revealed in the federal wiretap transcripts, even as he knew he was being investigated...Whatever his current motivation, he came into office with a very different persona. As a young congressman representing the North Side of Chicago, Blagojevich was pegged as a rising star with a populist touch. Undistinguished as a lawmaker but with proven likability in and out of Chicago, he seemed hellbent on pushing reform and cleaning house in a state with an embarrassingly overt culture of political corruption. Full Article... Hmmm. He was a "rising star with a populist touch," eh? Isn't every Democrat billed as having a "populist touch" these days? Hmmm. "Undistinguished as a lawmaker," she says? Remember, she's talking about Blagojevich, not Barackobamavich, who was also a "rising star" with a "populist touch" who was/is, nevertheless, "undistinguished as a lawmaker." Let us not get off point, however. Saulny's article is poignant and important. It's about politicians who present a kind face while running for office, but take their masks off, sooner or later, after they get into office. It all brings to mind an old Who song. You remember the lyrics, perhaps: "I get on my knees and pray we don't get fooled again....Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Culture of Corruption Update: Luis Gutierrez

The Bench front page... Luis, Luis, Luis, loo ah, Luis, Luis, the F-B-I, Luis, Luis, Luis, you're gonna cry. U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez is a man of mystery, and federal investigators want to unravel the mystery of his fantastically profitable business dealings. Rezko, of course, is part of the mystery. The FBI has obtained the letter Gutierrez wrote in July 2004 to Daley. Gutierrez, a former alderman and 1st Ward Democratic committeeman, wrote the letter on behalf of developer Calvin Boender. Months earlier, Boender had lent the congressman $200,000 in a land deal.Gutierrez has bought and sold properties with five campaign donors, including convicted political fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko. Blagojevich: I'm 'always awful'

The Bench front page... Oh, I'm sorry, there's a typo in the headline of this post. The correct headline should have had Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich uttering, "whatever I say is always lawful." (Ha!) Federal prosecutors are busy looking into the wheelings and dealings of Blago. Recently, a Blago buddy's business was raided. We know Tony Rezko was a benefactor and friend. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Many insiders are expecting an federal indictment by Christmas. The Chicago Tribune reports today: Gov. Rod Blagojevich responded today to the Chicago Tribune's report that he has been recorded by federal investigators, saying people should "feel free" to tape him because everything he says is lawful. (Source) He went on to say that "I can tell you that whatever I say is always lawful." Boy, there's a slick phrase, and it depends on what the meaning of "is" is. While everything he says may be "lawful," the feds want to know whether everything he does is lawful. The governor's comments to reporters were the first since the Tribune reported Friday that John Wyma, one of his closest confidants, had cooperated in the federal corruption probe of him and his administration, and that Blagojevich has been taped as part of the investigation. (Source) Federal investigators don't investigate somebody because they believe he's "always lawful." Their mission is find facts that may - or may not - tie a person to criminal activity. It's then up to a court to decide innocence or guilt. Don't miss the fun videos below.

FLASH: FEDS CLOSING IN ON BLAGOJEVICH

The Bench front page... Questions of the Day: What's on the tape that the feds made of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich? What did the feds find when they raided a business owned by a Blago fundraiser? Here's your morning water cooler conversation starter: The Chicago Tribune reported that John Wyma, whom the newspaper describes as "one of the governor's closest confidants and former aides," helped with an investigation that led to tapings of Blagojevich and others. Wyma was Blagojevich's chief of staff when the governor was representing the Illinois' 5th District in Congress. His name has surfaced repeatedly in connection with possible illegal fundraising, and even the probe into First Lady Patti Blagojevich. More at CBS2 Chicago...
