Capitol Fax Finds Heather Steans "Refreshing"

I generally respect the political reporting on The Capitol Fax Blog, but am a bit disappointed as I read yesterday's "Inauguration Open Thread" by Rich Miller. Several things are disturbing, a lot really, about the item. Most disturbing is the velvet glove treatment of state senator Heather Steans, who has donated insane amounts of money to both Blagojevich and Emil Jones. Miller is generally an excellent correspondent and writer, and so the breathless, awe-struck Medill-journalism-student-like way in which he wrote the report makes one wonder if he had too little sleep the night before. The title of the post is odd. The subject matter of "Inauguration Open Thread" is not about the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama at all, except for one passing reference to it. Rather, it's about the action in the Illinois Legislature and the Senate's moves toward impeaching Blagojevich. The post is a presented as a timeline, of sorts, of Wednesday's action in the state senate. Let's look some out takes, with breathlessness and velvet gloves in bold red. Again, the atmosphere in the chamber is completely solumn [sic]. It’s a fascinating experience. The schedule is being adopted now, including a mandated respond by the governor by Jan. 20th - Obama’s inauguration day. I'm not sure why solemnity is so fascinating in this context. Miller might have been writing about a state funeral for a beloved national leader. Ellis is finished and now the chief justice is being escorted into the senate. He will then be sworn in as the trial’s presiding officer. I have never heard such quiet in this chamber. Very solemn. Again, Miller's odd fascination with the solemnity and "quiet" in the senate chamber. The moment was, after all, very serious. It would only have been remarkable had the senators in the chamber not been solemn, but for them to be quiet and solemn yesterday was only to be expected and only appropriate. Even the crooks of Springfield are civilized enough to not laugh at a man as he is being escorted in chains to the gallows. Sen. Steans has shown once again why she is fast gaining respect here. She just openly and refreshingly addressed the upcoming impeachment trial and Emil Jones’ failures. As for describing Steans' speechifying as "refreshingly," Miller might better have used adjectives such as disgustingly, hypocritically, self aggrandizingly or cynically. There are more adjectives that would have been better than "refreshingly," but we only have so much space and time to work with here. The big question is why Miller chose "refreshingly" to describe Steans' talk about the upcoming Senate trial of Blagojevich, a man to whom she and husband Leo Smith have donated some $200,000 to for his campaigns? "Openly?" Did Steans come clean about her mega-donations to Rod Blagojevich, Emil Jones and John Cullerton? Surely, Rich Miller is aware that Steans enabled Jones and has been a major donor to him. Surely he read the Chicago Tribune editorial, "The Blagojevich 26," on January 4, 2009. It said (emphasis added): We're in this disheartening situation because of choices Blagojevich has made. We're here, too, because so many members of the Illinois Senate have enabled him. They had the chance to let us vote him out of office. They sided with him, and against the people of the state. Why did so many senators kowtow to Jones and Blagojevich? What were these Democrats thinking? You can ask them. Here are the 21 Democrats who voted no or present (the effect was the same), denying you a choice on whether Illinois should have a recall amendment... The Trib listed the names of the Blago enablers. The list included the "refreshing" Heather Steans and Emil Jones. Steans has also given frantic funds to John Cullerton. Rich Miller thinks Heather Steans is "refreshing." Maybe his memory will be refreshed by these numbers: Money that Heather Steans and her family have given to Emil Jones, (Illinois Senate Democratic Fund, Emil Jones, chair) (2002 thru present): $53,500 to Jones from Heather Steans (and husband Leo Smith, 2002 thru present) $35,000 to Jones from Leo's PAC $ 2,500 to Illinois Senate Democratic Fund $91,000 so far (the January 20 reports may reveal more) Money that Heather Steans and her family have given to John Cullerton, (Senate Democratic Victory Fund [SDVF], John Cullerton, chair): $25,000 to SDVF from Friends of Heather Steans $15,000 to SDVF from Heather Steans and Leo Smith $ 2,000 to Cullerton from Heather Steans and Leo Smith $ 1,000 to Cullerton from Leo Smith's PAC $25,000 to Cullerton from Harrison and Lois Steans (Heather's parents) $20,000 to Cullerton from Heather Steans' sisters $88,000 so far (the January 20 reports may reveal more) "All but $3,000 was given in anticipation of Cullerton's presidency," a source tells Chicago News Bench. Miller's blog from Springfield continued: No applause at all for the guv’s entrance. Total silence, in fact. Yes, for God's sake, we get it, they were solemn, oh-so-solemn. And why would they applaud Blago, anyway? It's seems a waste of bandwidth to note the obvious. Although Miller has emphasized repeatedly that the event was solemn and quiet, as opposed to festive and boisterous, he ends his post with this curiosity: ....WUIS radio will broadcast the Senate’s festivities, which will be presided over by the governor. "Festivities?" Wait a sec, was this "solemn?" But the Senate trial will be "festive?" Solemn or festive? Unlike Heather Steans, Rich, you can't have it both ways. Cullerton New Prez of IL State Senate

Late breaking news that State Sen. John Cullerton has been chosen by his Democrat Party to be the next President of the Illinois state Senate, replacing Emil Jones. (You remember the bigot Emil Jones, right?) Also, IL State Senate Republicans made a "very historic move" by naming the first woman ever to be a party leader in the General Assembly. That woman: Sen. Christine Radogno. (See? Dems aren't the only ones who can bring "change.") Source: CBS2-Chicago RELATED: Sen. John Cullerton wins state Senate presidency Ill. Illinois Governor Warns Obama

LO, THE DRAMA! Gov. Blagojevich, his veto pen, Illinois Senate President Emil "You're an Uncle Tom" Jones, the drama of the Do-nothing Democrats in Springfield (kinda like Congress, eh?), and the insertion of His Holiness Barack Obama into the fray! Illinois is fun, and Marathon Pundit points out yet more reasons to love it: Gov. Rod Blagojevich has a warning for Sen. Barack Obama. He predicts that before the presidential election, Obama will regret supporting ethics legislation that Blagojevich calls inadequate. "This is a Republican trap," Blagojevich said. "They're setting Barack Obama up by using this ethics issue in Illinois." More at Marathon Pundit... Gov. Paranoia? The Republicans are setting Obama up for this. Last time I checked, Obama is free to make his own decisions. But this is yet ANOTHER example of the indecisive Obama flip flopping. The Whole World is Watching

Today, the world is STILL watching Chicago, AGAIN for the wrong reasons. Forty years ago, the Democrats had their convention in Chicago. While delegates hid in their hotel rooms downtown, hooligans ran wild through the streets and parks of Chicago. Rioting engulfed large portions of the city. That's why the world was watching then. The world is watching Chicago again, ironically because of the current Democrat National Convention. It is ironic for several reasons. In 1968, Chicago's police had their hands full as lunatic nutjobs overturned cars, set fire to cars, pissed on cars, shat on cars... they liked cars back then. Chicago, it seemed, was about to self destruct. The world was watching Chicago, but for all the wrong reasons. Footnote to the 1968 Chicago Democrat Convention: Hubert Humphrey was the nominee. He lost to Nixon. In 2008, Denver's police have their hands full as lunatic nutjobs overturn cars, set fire to cars, piss on cars... you get the idea. There are worries about the safety, as in 1968, of the delegates and the nominees. Denver, it seems, could explode into real violence, but probably won't in any scale near what Chicago suffered in 1968. The irony: Chicagoan Barack Obama is this year's presidential nominee, a Black man who has built a career in large part on the false propagandist claim that a Black man cannot get ahead in this "racist" nation. His presence in Denver this week puts the lie to that. Another irony is that even though the 2008 convention is in Denver, the world is watching Chicago - again - because of bad things happening here. Tony Rezko. Joseph Cari, Jr. William Ayers. Reverend Wright. Father Pfleger. Cardinal George, the patron saint of child molesting priests. UIC-Annenberg. Delmarie Cobb, the Chicago political consultant that Illinois Senate President Emil Jones called an Uncle Tom. The mess in the labyrinth of Cook County "government." Inefficient schools. A murder rate that's nearly 20% higher now than a year ago. The highest taxes in the nation. The most corrupt city government in the nation. The dumbest City Council in the nation. City laws that make Chicago more restrictive than any other city in the nation. And so on and on. The world is watching. Again. More irony: The goofballs who were rioting in 1968 Chicago thought they were going to change the world, presumably for the better. Some, notably their "leaders," went on to become the very things they despised and spat on. The result of the 1968 riots, here and across the U.S., was a shake up in the political and social climate. That's the grist for twenty books right there, so let's just summarize by noting a few of the things that the Failed Revolution of the 1960's brought us: Tony Rezko. After all those broken windows and broken bones, broken dreams and broken promises, that's what their "revolution" has given us: More of the same with a dose of cynicism and resignation. Barack Obama was born in 1961, four years before the events in Selma that he falsely claims brought his parents together. He did not know the 1960's first hand; he was only nine in 1970. By the time Obama was 14, disco had replaced the protest music. Today Obama tells us that the United States is more racist than ever, more compassionless than ever, more despised by the world community than ever. Obama was only 14 when the United States pulled out of Saigon, Vietnam in 1975. The world's opinion of us was pretty low then, after it realized that the sudden withdrawal allowed the slaughtering of more than a million South Vietnamese by there "brothers" from the communist North. We were seen as irresponsible, uncaring losers. Obama wanted to repeat that script in the theater of Iraq. He may yet get the chance to produce that script. That, and so much more.

Emil Jones: History of Racist Remarks

Illinois Senate President and Obama mentor Emil Jones is not new to the game of race baiting. Early in 2007, for example, he gave a thinly veiled racial justification for supporting Barack Obama: Lynn Sweet, in the Chicago Sun-Times, February 6, 2007: "And I know that Barack Obama is our son and he deserves our support." He made a similar race-based appeal to a group of black Democratic activists Friday at a closed Democratic National Committee winter meeting. FULL ARTICLE at Sun-Times...

Illinois NOW President Dissed Obama in Past

In the wake of accusations that Obama buddy Emil Jones called a Hillary supporter an "Uncle Tom," the president of the Illinois chapter of the National Organization of Women has called for Jones's to get out of town. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME that Grabenhofer has gone against Obama. Today: Bonnie Grabenhofer, the president of the National Organization for Women's Illinois chapter and a Clinton supporter said the remarks that Cobb alleged Jones made were symbolized "the incredible pressure that had been put on, particularly women, to support Barack Obama." "Women in Illinois had that pressure, and it was particularly hard for African-American women who were placed in the untenable position of having to chose between their race and between their gender," Grabenhofer said. [Source: The Swamp...] Late last year, Obenhofer criticized Obama for the way he voted on "reproduction rights" (abortion) while he was an Illinois State Senator in Springfield. Obama voted "present" instead of "yes" or "no." A report from PolitiFact.com in December, 2007 reported this: No one questions that Obama opposed the seven pieces of legislation; indeed, he is mentioned in news reports from the time as being against several of the measures. Rather, Obama's critics say he ducked a "no" vote; supporters say it was a tactical move. Those interpretations seem to have split the leaders of the Illinois abortion rights movement. Obama should have voted "no" on those bills, said Bonnie Grabenhofer, president of the Illinois chapter of the National Organization for Women, which has endorsed Clinton. Who Is Delmarie Cobb?

Is she an "Uncle Tom?" Cobb, a delegate to the Democrat National Convention in Denver, has accused Illinois Senate President Emil Jones of calling her an Uncle Tom because she continues to support Hillary Clinton. We know that Jones is one of Obama's top supporters, a mentor, an old friend. But who exactly is Delmarie Cobb? She is a major player in the Democratic Party and a popular political consultant in the Chicago area. Lightweights don't become the press secretary for the Democrat National Convention, as Cobb was in 1996. Among the luminaries she has worked for and with are Jesse Jackson, Sr. and Jesse Jackson, Jr., Bobby Rush, and others. This hardly makes her sound like an "Uncle Tom." A significant article on April 2 noted that "Over the last few months Cobb has been in an interesting and sometimes frustrating place. As an African-American from Barack Obama's hometown who supports Hillary Clinton, Cobb has been pulled into the national conversation on race, gender, and bare-knuckles campaigning. This afternoon she shared a few of her thoughts in an interview." FULL ARTICLE at Chicago Reader... (The Reader couldn't have known then how relevant that article would be today.) It seems, then, that the alleged Emil Jones slandering of her as an Uncle Tom is something that Cobb has had to deal with for a while. Back to that Reader article, in which Cobb is quoted as saying: Being a Hillary Clinton supporter, I don’t know why you have to tear down one person to be in favor of someone else. That’s the overall problem I have with this entire campaign. It’s not just been Jeremiah Wright—it’s with so many of Obama’s supporters. There’s the need to attack supporters of everyone else, and to make them into racists. Cobb did a radio interviewed on "Beyond the Beltway." Listen to that April 27 interview here (mp3 audio). EMIL JONES: I SAID "DOUBTING THOMAS"

Emil Jones is either a lousy liar or he thinks that we're all stupid. He is accused by Delmarie Cobb, a Hillary supporter at the Denver Democrat Convention, of calling Cobb an "Uncle Tom." Jones's response is that no, he actually called her a "doubting Thomas." (Watch the video here.) Huh? "Doubting Thomas" (four syllables) and "Uncle Tom" (three syllables) sound nothing alike. HOT: BIDEN'S REZKO TIES

The shite is hitting the fan fast today! THIS BREAKING STORY: According to the Chicago Sun Times Sen. Joseph Biden, his newly named vice presidential running mate, evidently has ties to Tony Rezko as well. Biden has described himself as a 30-year friend of a key figure in the Rezko trial who's pleaded guilty to a federal extortion charge in Chicago and is awaiting sentencing. Joseph Cari Jr., who took part in an $850,000 kickback scheme, was Joe Biden's Midwest field director. The Sun-Times reports that "Biden has deep ties to Rezko accomplice" and that Biden "won't give Obama much cover on the Tony Rezko front." WOW! Racist Emil Jones Disrupts IL Dems in Denver

Barack Obama's mentor is causing trouble in Denver. Emil Jones, the retiring President of the Illinois Sentate, called a fellow Illinois delegate - allegedly - an "Uncle Tom." See folks, if you don't tow the hard party line in the Democrat Party, you're stupid, you're ignorant, and if you're Black you must be an Uncle Tom. Independent thinking will not be tolerated, by Emil Jones or anybody else. ABC7 has this startling report today: One member of the Illinois delegation is causing some controversy. The incident involved a conversation that allegedly occurred between Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, a star supporter of Obama, and Delmarie Cobb, an Illinois delegate and Clinton supporter. Okay, that's the set up. Delmarie Cobb, a Black woman, isn't on her knees bowing to the Obamessiah. She must, in the mind of Emil Jones, be an "Uncle Tom." That, to be blunt, translates to "race traitor," a term that the likes of David Duke frequently use. Cobb claims the two were bantering back and forth, when Jones allegedly called her an 'Uncle Tom,' a derogatory term implying she was betraying the black community. There were three Chicago aldermen who were present when the exchange supposedly took place, but Jones is denying that he ever made the comment. FULL STORY at ABC7-Chicago... Jones can deny all he wants, but it seems there were credible witnesses, according to Cobb: "Last night, I was called an 'Uncle Tom' by Emil Jones in the lobby of the hotel, right in front of [Ald.] Freddrenna Lyle and [Ald.] Leslie Hairston and [Ald.] Latasha Thomas," said Cobb, a member of Clinton's Illinois Steering Committee. "I walked over to him and asked him, 'What did you just call me?'" [Source: NewsBusters] The Chicago Sun-Times has this video of Jones's response to reporters. This will not play well at all with Hillary supporters, and it will not sit well with many Black voters either. For example: Here we go again, another person associated with Barack Obama has managed to call the wrong type of attention to himself. Jones is often referred to as Obama's "political godfather." Comment: Emil Jones Getting it Done

"Natasha" writes this in response to "Emil Jones's Next Move": Obama can't possibly touch Jones if he wants to become (and remain) president. But they could do for Jones what they did for the political nuclear waste that is Carol Ronen: Give Jones a job in the Blagojevich administration. By November, Jones' can double his pension AND still take the $500K in campaign cash he has banked. Jones is appointing his son on top of it all? Hasn't anybody checked the tally? Emil already spent (I mean was paid for) his appointment allowance. Her name is Sen. Heather Steans.

Emil Jones's Next Move

A highly intriguing post on the Daily Kos, by somebody with a pseudonym, discusses what kind of move Emil Jones might bust next. Jones is currently the President of the Illinois State Senate. He is well connected, as anybody in such a position would be, but Jones has some extraordinary connections. Illinois Governor Blagojevich likes Jones, after all, and not every state legislator is favored by his or her governor. There is talk of Blago offering Jones a nice position in his administration. This assumes, of course, that the same Tony Rezko who could still pull down Barack Obama does not take out out Blagojevich. Jones says he is not interested in being appointed to Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat if enough voters remain ignorant and actually elect Obama as president in November. That leaves another option: A big fat cushy appointment to a big fat cushy job in Washington D.C. Oh, and front row seats at the inauguration. I'm sure President McCain won't mind Emil Jones in the front row. McCain is good at reaching out across the aisle. RELATED: Comment: Emil Jones Getting it Done

Emil Jones: Good Riddance to Bad Trash

Former sewer inspector Emil Jones has announced his intention to retire from the Illinois State Legislature. For many of us, Jones can't leave too soon. John Ruberry writes that "Jones' retirement is not immediate. He will remain on the November ballot, so he can hand-pick his successor. And if Jones follows tradition, he'll probably pick a relative." John, of Marthon Pundit, was right-on, and indeed updated his post later today with this: "Surprise, surprise. Jones wants some guy named Emil Jones III to succeed him. You can't make this stuff up." MEANWHILE, a revealing and must-read post on Daily Kos indicates that Jones pal Barack Obama might give him a plum position in Washington if Obama continues to fool enough voters: My own encounters with Emil this year center around Obama's presidential campaign. We were in the same office in both Iowa and Wisconsin, and while I think he traveled with different aides to the two states, it was amazing how they (Emil's aides) pushed the same lines. The one that was the most memorable (and startling, given what I know about Barack) was that, when asked what job Emil would get in an Obama Administration, the answer was always the same: "Anything He Wants."
