May 3, 2010 - Back on April 18, Chicago News Bench broke the story that Scott Lee Cohen would run for governor as an independent. We did not say that he "might" run. Our headline said "Scott Lee Cohen WILL Run For Governor." No if's, and's or but's.
Six days later, on April 24, the wishy-washy local media finally caught up to us on that story - sort of. Even then, the media just couldn't bring themselves to say what CNB did - that Cohen would actually run. Nope, they couched their stories with "maybe" and "might" and "may," not wanted to commit to what CNB already knew. So today, more than two weeks after we scooped everyone else, it is with a big yawn and a "ho-hum" that we pass along the fact that Cohen made a public statement this morning, telling the world that he would run for governor as an independent. A big "thanks" to friend John Ruberry at Marathon Pundit for his post "Six days after Chicago News Bench reports it, Chicago Tribune says Cohen running for guv" on April 24.
But Cohen is a Democrat, regardless of the label he now uses. He has said repeatedly that he is a Democrat and that his values are those of a Democrat. He's been sucking up to Michael Madigan, the man who engineered his ouster from the Democrat ticket a week after he won the Lt. Governor position in the Democrat primary. Cohen has flaked out on a number of commitments, including the well publicized non-appearance at Erie Cafe on April 14, organized by William J. Kelly. Cohen never did call Kelly beforehand to say he wouldn't show up, nor afterward to apologize and offer an explanation. Cohen still has a lot of unanswered questions about his (allegedly) sordid past, and we'd all like to know what the threats were that Madigan made to him. Cohen has admitted that he received threats from the Illinois Democrat Party prior to his agreeing to drop off the ticket in February.
Will the Cohen vote split enough numbers away from the Quinn-Simon ticket to help Bill Brady in November? Yes, if enough Democrat voters are stupid enough to vote for him. Brady must be smiling.

Local Media Finally Catch Up to Us on Cohen's Run For Guv Story
April 24, 2010 - The big boys just can't keep up with us, I guess. Six days ago, on April 18, Chicago News Bench reported that Scott Lee Cohen will run for governor as an independent. Not "might," will. While some other blogs and some newspapers were speculating that he might, we reported that he absolutely planned to run. We cited William J. Kelly as our source.
Today, CBS 2 Chicago, ABC 7 Chicago, The Chicago Sun-Times, WJBD Radio, WLS Radio and The Chicago Tribune are reporting it as "news." Only the Huffington Post had the professional courtesy to acknowledge our scoop on this major story. On April 18, we reported this:
Chicago News Bench has learned that Scott Lee Cohen (photo, left) WILL run for governor - as an independent. (Note, 4/19/2010: We stand by everything in this post.) Rumors about this have been circulating for several days now, but a man in the know told us late this afternoon that Cohen told him two weeks that he will run. That man: William J. Kelly...

Everybody is welcome: Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, all are invited to discuss their issues about the City of Chicago. Anyone who attends will have an opportunity to speak. Open bar from 6:00 - 7:00 PM - Speakers begin at 7:00 PM.
Erie Cafe: 536 W Erie Street (free valet parking available); Tel (312) 266-2300 http://www.eriecafe.com/

REFORM CHICAGO NOW AGENDA
End corruption and demand full transparency in the political process:
1. Open up the public bidding process to small and medium-sized businesses that lack clout and personal connections. Enforce laws against fraud in public bidding process and clean up the minority contracting certification program.
2. Demand the immediate end of corrupt government benefit practices – including unused vacation payouts, early retirement, and double-dipping of benefits to name a few. We cannot create or maintain a privileged government class that has more privileges that the taxpayers that fund it.
3. Take legislative map-making out of the hands of political insiders and empower a non-partisan board to create maps for an up or down legislative vote.
Halt Chicago’s climb to bankruptcy and reduce taxes on families and businesses:
4. Institute a moratorium on adding new benefits or extending expiring pension benefit programs until true public pension reform addresses the ticking time bomb of unfunded mandates.
5. Bring Chicago and Cook County taxpayers into true tax parity with other taxpayers in Illinois.
Run government like a business and create new businesses:
6. Institute a real business-approach to government by using private sector firms to provide municipal, demand-driven services. Eliminate barriers for small business startups and put an end to insider bidding and privileges.
Run education like a business with a system of rewards and penalties:
7. Evaluate and rewards teachers based on student performance. We applaud the newly created school voucher program for Chicago children enrolled in low-performing schools.
8. Address wasteful bureaucratic education spending and bring spending into line with available revenue.
Don’t give criminals any more advantages:
9. Improve Chicago's Homeland Security posture by more more effectively coordinating with state and national intelligence.
10. Update Chicago's sex-offender registry through a public-private partnership and institute effective practices that require police to obtain arrest warrants to track hundreds of “missing” sex-offenders.

Scott Lee Cohen Bashes Giannoulias, Regrets Dropping Out
Scott Lee Cohen is finally acknowledging reality. Some of it, anyway. In an interview this afternoon at the Fox Chicago studios, he finally shows sign of realizing that he was screwed by the Illinois (un)Democratic Party. Cohen criticized fellow Democrat Alexi Giannoulius for being inexperienced and unqualified to run for U.S. Senate, and called him out as a hypocrite for asking him to step off of the Democrats' Governor-Lt. Governor ticket.
The video of that interview, below, gives hints of Cohen's sprouting indignity at the unjust fate dumped upon him by the Political Machine. Fast forward to 3:38 into the video here for Scott Lee Cohen's withering attack on Alexi Giannoulius.
XXX | Cohen, as you probably know, is the man who was forced to resign from the race for Lt. Governor by the (un)Democratic Party in February, just days after he won the primary fair and square. Gov. Pat Quinn, running for re-election, didn't like the idea of a running mate with a tarnished past. Cohen has no criminal record and is a respected businessman, but his involvement with woman of - well, let's just say of questionable repute - was enough for Quinn's henchmen to lean on Cohen. |
One of those henchmen is current State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, running for U.S. Senate against Republican Mark Kirk. Giannoulias has his own multitude of problems, all of which are more serious than anything Cohen was saddled with.
Cohen told Fox News, "I see my past and my history and," (three second pause), "I look at a what people like Giannoulius have going on right now, and his scandal that's coming to light. Where did he have the audacity to ask me to step down? Uhm, it doesn't make sense to me. And, I think that had I given it more time and, and cleared my head a little bit, I may not have stepped down."
Cohen was asked why he felt it was wrong for Giannoulius to ask him to get out of the race.
"He has many more skeletons than I'll ever have," he said, "I believe that as time goes on and it gets closer to the general [election] other things will come to light with him." Cohen then criticized Giannoulias for not having enough experience to be a U.S. Senator.
I expect we'll hear more of this kind of talk from Cohen as he continues to regain his self confidence over the coming days and weeks. Scott Cohen will be a keynote speaker at the Reform Chicago Now meeting on April 14. It will be interesting to see how the Illinois (un)Democratic Party responds to Cohen in light of (a) what he is saying is true and (b) the Democrats of Illinois are nothing more than a gang of criminals and/or criminal enablers.

Fake Grassroots, Coffee Party USA National Kickoff Day, March 13
The "Coffee Party USA" is having a sort of grand opening, if you will, this Saturday, March 13. It's been carefully orchestrated nationally to appear to be grassroots, but we'll see why it's not in a moment as we look at a Chicago event. That event, in the north side neighborhood of Rogers Park, is being coordinated by Baxter Swilley, 34, a very busy Democrat operative who most recently served as Scott Lee Cohen's downstate director. He was also a major player with U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky. (Also see Ron Paul Supporters Aiding Coffee Party USA)
The Tea Party movement - hundreds of groups across the country with no central committee or governing body - have been falsely criticized by the Left and Democrats as being controlled by the Republican Party. That is simply not true.
What is true, however, is that a bizarre response to the Tea Parties has arisen, and it is the spawn of the Democrats. They call themselves, laughably, "The Coffee Party USA." We'll call them CPUSA (which, of course, could also stand for "Communist Party USA").
While the Coffee Party USA attempts to make itself appear to be grassroots, it is not. In an attempt to be "grassroots," CPUSA has distributed hundreds of form letter press releases for local organizers to send out. Chicago News Bench intercepted one such press release, which announces a March 13 event in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood. It is quite amusing.
Click here to see the full press release for the Rogers Park event,
then click here to see the identical press release for a Kansas City event.
The cookie-cutter press releases are, of course, intended to be localized and personalized by the senders. Local organizers are suppose to put their own names on the releases, along with the times and locations of their events. In the case of the Rogers Park event's press release, organizer Baxter Swilley, neglected to add "Today's Date." Swilley sent the release as an MS Word attachment. In the body of the email, he accidentally admits that this event and all of the others on March 13 have been orchestrated by a higher authority. Swilley wrote this (emphasis added):
Swilley, by the way, is big-time Lib operative. He was behind Citizens for 2016, a group that supported Mayor Daley's bid to bring the Olympics to Chicago. He was the Political Director for the John Edwards-Campaign Organization - Missouri, where he is listed under the "Edwards for President, Inc. Missouri Leadership." His short bio summary there says that his experience "includes political director for US Representative Jan Schakowsky and campaign manager of Jackson, MS Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr.'s 2001 re-election campaign." (Harvey Johnson was the first Black mayor of Jackson.)
Swilley has also worked for U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Chicago, a former Black Panther. Oh, and Scott Lee Cohen, who won the Illinois Democrat primary for Lt. Governor in February, 2010 but was forced out of the race by the Illinois Democrat Party. Swilley was Cohen's downstate coordinator and spokesman. He's been a busy boy.
In 2002, as Schakowsky’s Political Director, Swilley was instrumental in creating a 2,500 person field organization to designed to give Democrats a landslide win that November. (Source: http://www.hicsocial.org/Social2003Proceedings/Judith-Rae%20E.%20Ross%202.pdf - page 13)
What we have in Baxter Swilley, is a devoted Democrat operative who moves around from state to state, organizing locals in "grassroots" efforts even though he himself is an outsider. Originally from Maywood, a suburb 13 miles due west downtown Chicago, Swilley embedded himself in Chicago's north side in Rogers Park in 2001. That's the same year, not coincidentally, that Jan Schakowsky hired Swilley as her Political Director. Ironically, his Democracy For America page shows that his favorite quote is "Keep it real."
The CPUSA, it is claimed, was "founded by" Annabel Park, a big-time Democrat operative. According to Frank Ross at BigJournalism.com, the CPUSA is, to paraphrase him, a front group for Democrat Party diversionary and fakery tactics:

I hope you all can join me at the Coffee Party USA kick-off on Saturday, March 13 at Charmers Cafe, 1500 W. Jarvis in Rogers Park - 10:30 AM. Clearly, this organization is not led by someone from Chicago. Otherwise they would know that we'd all be at a huge parade on this day and instead of drinking coffee we'd be drinking green beer. So, let's compromise... after a cup of coffee and civil dialogue on the important political issues in our communities we will go next door for one of those beers at the Poitin Stil - a quaint Irish Bar.So much for "grassroots." According to Swilley's own email, CPUSA ("this organization") is not led locally. That's no secret, of course, but it is an admission that they are getting their marching orders from some central authority. Namely, CPUSA, which performs a function that the Tea Party movement has no equivalent of: A controlling, order giving central authority. The CPUSA people are drawn to a central committee, whereas the Tea Party people are suspicious of any attempt to form such a body. Tea Partiers are independent thinkers. CPUSA appeals to those who look to a Big Uncle figure for guidance and thought suggestion.
Swilley, by the way, is big-time Lib operative. He was behind Citizens for 2016, a group that supported Mayor Daley's bid to bring the Olympics to Chicago. Yet there was nothing accidental about Park’s anti-Tea Party activism; the Coffee Party’s roots are about as grassy as the signature surface of the old Houston Astrodome; and Park’s facade of cooperation is undermined by her “tea bagger” epithets on Twitter. Meanwhile, her claim that the Coffee Party is “purely grassroots” and “independent of any party” is laughably rebutted by the fact that the registrant for the website was listed as “Real Virginians For Webb, 14461 Sedona Drive, Gainesville, Virginia 20155” until the information suddenly went private behind a proxy. That’s “Webb” as in Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, one of at least two elected Democrats for whom Park has actively campaigned (as evidenced by this campaign video, “Real Virginians for Webb”... Full Post at bigjournalism.com...To listen to Park herself, however, she did this all by her lonesome. She tells that lie in a video posted at the CPUSA's website. "Keep it real," as Baxter Swilley likes to say, just doesn't play with the CPUSA.

The Privilege of Voting in Illinois
by Sandy Goldman
Sandy Goldman writes a blog called "The Rogers Park Community Curmudgeon." It's about events in Rogers Park (a neighborhood on the far northeast side of Chicago, just south of Evanston). He's a longtime community activist and a Rogers Park resident since 1958. He recently wrote a column about voting in Illinois, Scott Lee Cohen, and Democrat leadership. He's also a helluva nice guy.
Some excerpts from his column:
For generations citizens have died to protect the sanctity of our Constitution and to protect our right to vote. Illinois is not a third world country whose citizens are required to vote as their leaders determine. This is characteristic of countries like Iran and the former Soviet Union. Many voted for Scott Lee Cohen for Lt. Governor of Illinois in the Democratic primary recently and he won! Now the Democratic combine has negated those 212,900 votes....
Just who do Governor Pat Quinn, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Speaker of the House Mike Madigan, Senator Dick Durbin, Congressperson Jan Schakowsky and the rest of the gang think gave them the right to essentially reverse the Democratic Primary results?...
Each of these manipulators should look deep into their own souls...
This may well turn out to be the year of the Republicans in Illinois and the Democratic “leaders” have no one to blame but themselves... Read the full post here

Scott Lee Cohen and Barack Obama's Office Space
February 7, 2010 - I was just looking at video about Scott Lee Cohen, the duly elected
Democrat candidate for Illinois Lt. Governor who was shamefully forced off the ticket. Cohen resigned tonight, but that's not what this post is about. As I looked at the video, shots of the interior of Cohen's campaign office looked very familiar.
The top photo here is a frame from an ABC7 report. The photo underneath is was taken by me in the same office space on Sept. 20, 2008. Notice the wood of the pillar.
I felt as if I'd been there before, and a search of my photographs confirmed that I had - when I visited Barack Obama's volunteer center in September, 2008. Yep, same ceiling, same wood pillars, same wall. Same space, same address, in the basement of 566 W. Lake Street, Chicago.
A June 3, 2008 press release from Cohen:
"While other candidates are positioning themselves and evaluating the playing field, Scott Lee Cohen, a Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor, will host a job fair on Thursday, June 4th from10am – 4pm at 566 W. Lake Street in Chicago. Cohen is taking a break from the campaign trail to transform his campaign office into a job resource center for Chicagoland residents."
Of course, this means nothing. It's just one of those weird moments, a sort of deja vu ... and the fervent hope that the same political fate will befall a previous tenant.

SCOTT LEE COHEN GIVES IN, QUITS ILLINOIS RACE
SUNDAY, FEB. 7, 2010 - CBS2 Chicago reports: Embattled lieutenant governor nominee Scott Lee Cohen said Sunday he is quitting as a Democratic candidate in the November election, following the controversy over accusations he abused his ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend.A tearful Cohen made the announcement to reporters at a Far North Side bar and said he came to his decision after meeting with House Speaker Michael Madigan, who chairs the state's Democratic Party. Full Story, CBS2...
Cohen made his announcement while in a bar packed with people watching the Super Bowl. What shameful political party. What travesty.
Cohen should have stayed in the race for these reasons: (1) To honor the votes of those who cast their ballots for him; (2) To show Michael Madigan that he and the Democrat Machine are not gods; (3) To get a better book deal.

Bob Beckel and Scott Lee Cohen Both Have PPP
Scott Lee Cohen is not the only guy in the news with PPP: Past Prostitute Problems. Liberal commentator Bob Beckel has PPP, too.
The Illinois Democrat Party is freaked out about Scott Lee Cohen and his alleged relationship to a woman they claim was a prosititute. Cohen, who won the Democrat primary for Illinois' Lieutenant Governor on Feb. 2, is now by law the running mate of incumbent governor Pat Quinn. Cohen, by the way, claims that he thought the former girlfriend was simply a massage therapist. The irony here is so rich that it's positively artery clogging.
The prostitutes and whores who run the Illinios Democrat Party sell themselves to the highest bidders as a routine matter of conducting business. Just as Illinois State Senator Heather Steans, for example. You think Rod Blagojevich was an exception? Nah, he was just dumber than most of them and got caught. To call Cohen unfit to run because he once had a relationship with a prostitute is the height of hypocrisy, even if by analogy and metaphor.
The liberal media are hypocrites, too, as typified by Bob Beckel, one of the most annoying men ever to disgrace himself on America's television screens. Why Beckel is a frequent guest on Sean Hannity's show at Fox is beyond me, but there he was on Monday, February 1, falsely calling journalist Hannah Giles a "ho." For those of you in Kankakee, "ho" is slang for "whore," which is slang for prostitute.
Lori Ziganto, a fine journalist herself, wrote this about that on iOwnTheWorld.com:
For those who didn’t see the show, the creepy Bob Beckel called Hannah Giles, Queen of the awesome ACORN take-down, a Ho during his Monday night appearance on “Hannity.”
Yes, THAT Hannah Giles, the beautiful young woman who pretended to be a prostitute in those ACORN sting videos. Giles herself wrote a wicked response to Beckel's slur against her, and posted it at BigJournalism.com:
In the summer of 2002 Beckel came to know 20-year old “Tiffany,” a professional hooker who, after establishing a business relationship with him, attempted to extort $50,000 in exchange for her not exposing their relationship to his ex-wife and employers.
Whoa! I mean, Ho! Beckel was involved with a whore, uh ho, uh prostitute, uh sex worker. I guess his involvement with an actual prostie disqualifies him from ever running for public office as a Democrat in Illinois, because the virtual prosties at the Democrat Party couldn't possibly have someone like him disgracing their untarnished reputations.
Columnist and CNB contributor Warner Todd Huston wrote about the criminal nature of Illinois politicians in January, about three weeks before Cohen won his primary race:
Illinois has had three governors sent to prison and a fourth, Rod Balgojevich, waiting to find out if he will become the next to take up residence behind bars. The “Land of Lincoln” has had over 80 legislators sent to prison since the 1970s. But Cook County deserves special recognition for its corruption and criminal politicians.... Full post at American Conservative Daily
The Christian Science Monitor had a good report about the sliminess of the Illinois political sewer in late 2008:
Three of the state’s seven previous governors have been convicted and served time. Since 1971, by one count, 31 Chicago aldermen and some 1,000 public officials and businessmen have been convicted. “We’re the corruption capital of the United States,” says Dick Simpson, a political scientist at the University of Illinois in Chicago and a former Chicago alderman, who maintains that state corruption count. “We have more [corruption] even than New Jersey and Louisiana, which are our competitors.”
Bob Beckel and Pat Quinn will continue disgracing themselves by committing character assassination on people who are not corrupt, or not as corrupt, or no more corrupt, than many of the lawmakers who currently sit in the Illinois Legislature, the Chicago City Council and the Cook County Board of Commissioners.
God forbid somebody like Scott Lee Cohen should want to stand next to the squeaky clean, non-corrupt, anti-vice Illinois Democrats. Somebody might get dirty.

Scott Lee Cohen's Ex-Wife DEFENDS Him on WTTW
The Democrat Party insiders are pressuring legally-elected Lt. Governor candidate Scott Lee Cohen to remove himself from the ticket he legally shares with Gov. Pat Quinn. They claim he's an embarrassment and not fit to be on the ticket. They have launched a full-blown slur campaign against a guy who has gone through tough times and turned himself around. He has never been convicted of any of the charges they can dig up in his past. To hear the Democrat Party of Illinois, Cohen's ex-wife hates him .
Newsflash: Cohen's wife defended him and supported him in this amazing interview on WTTW (video below). It is becoming more clear every day that Cohen is being shunned by The Machine because he's not one of their own. Now they're trying to destroy the character of a man who has had troubles in the past, but he's worked them out. He is divorced, but his ex-wife goes on TV and defends him. He owns a pawn shop, which loans money to people outside of the systems and sells merchandise at low prices, both of which help the downtrodden. To remove Scott Cohen is to slap everyone who voted for him.
Even Chicago Mayor Richard Daley - a Democrat - refuses to call for Cohen to step aside. According to Fox Chicago, "Daley called the whole Cohen situation a 'constitutional dilemma,' but said neither he, nor any newspaper, nor anyone in Illinois could ask Cohen to resign just because they 'don't like him anymore.'" I'm not sure why Daley would consider the Cohen Affair to be a constitutional dilemma when there is nothing in the state's charter that prevents Cohen from either running for the office or holding the office. Even so, Daley's point is clear: Cohen should not be bullied off the ticket.
The Democrats have more than their share of corrupt and sometimes convicted members. Compared to many of them, Cohen is a Boy Scout. Shame on the Democrat Party of Illinois for attacking a man who has every legal right to remain on the ticket, and shame on the people if they allow them to force him out or buy him off. Cohen should be demanding that Quinn leave the ticket, because it is Quinn who is acting dishonorably in all this. It is ironic, coming from a political party that claims to be so concerned about giving people second chances and preaches compassion and equality. Apparently, those values apply only to dues paying members of the Machine.
In Defense of Scott Lee Cohen
by Michael Coyne
I don’t like to make a habit out of defending the opposition party, but it seems that our side needs to seriously get a better grip on things.
Recently, I was forced to defend Rahm Emanuel against Sarah Palin. Now, I may very well be forced to defend the new Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, Scott Cohen, from media criticism and conspiracy-hunters on my own side of the aisle.
Cohen was apparently arrested five years ago for a domestic abuse allegation. The charges were dropped, and the accuser was a known prostitute. Now, Cohen is being called on to explain the allegation and may very well be forced to recuse himself of his party’s nomination.
This is ridiculous. If the allegation is true, Cohen is a monster. Welcome to Common-sense-land. But, given that the charges were dropped because the so-called “victim” failed to even show up to court—notwithstanding the known credibility of the prostitute community—we should be willing to move past this nonsense and onto matters of actual significance.
Cohen vehemently denies any wrongdoing, and says that he did not harm the woman. It is understandable, from a journalistic standpoint, to follow this story. But it is unlikely that anything substantial will come of it. In the realm of reasoned debate, this is a non-issue.
Cohen should not be Illinois’s Lieutenant Governor. However, I reached this conclusion because his party has failed the state. It has nothing to do with a supposed controversy.
Let’s let cooler heads prevail. Debate the issues, not a five-year-old dropped case. The past is the past; let’s live in the present.

Leave a Comment * Conservative T-Shirts * Follow CNB on Twitter * RSS FeedScott Lee Cohen, the Democrat’s newly named candidate for Lieutenant Governor, is again being questioned about his 2005 domestic battery arrest.
Although the case was dropped, apparently due to the failed appearance of the victim, concerns remain. It is alleged that Cohen, who was going through a divorce, held a knife to his girlfriend’s throat. A filed police report shows that the victim, a convicted prostitute, had cuts on her throat and hands...(read more)
