FINAL UPDATE: MAJOR TALIBAN ATTACK ON NATO/ISAF IN KABUL PUT DOWN WITH FEW CASUALTIES

Afghan police to the attack in Kabul. Photo: Reuters
UPDATE, 12:50 AM CDT, June 10 -- "Today’s clashes in Kabul ended with all of the insurgents killed by Afghan security forces. Two insurgents were able to detonate their explosive-laden vests and five others were killed by security forces. The clearance operation inside the building is underway. Five suicide vests and some weapons were left at the scene. In this incident, civilians and security forces were unharmed. The situation is back to normal." - via ISAF: NATO forces in Afghanistan Facebook page, quoting Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior (MoI).

A report from Bakhtar News says that 7 suicide attackers were killed. "General Ayoob Salangi police chief of Kabul said BNA, at 5 am, seven suicide attackers armed with heavy and light weapons attacked Kabul International Airport from two under construction buildings near the Airport. According to him, two of the attackers exploded their suicide vest and five others were killed in 3 hour clash by security forces." There were no casualties among civilians or the security forces.

UPDATE, 1:08 AM CDT, June 10 -- "Kabul police saying that all 7 bombers whom were wearing Afghan Border police (ABP) uniforms were gunned down 2 civilians injured." via Sharifullah Sahak  (@sharifsahak)

The attack focused on the US Air Force facility and a nearby detention center where  drug traffickers are held. TOLO news reports the attack is on an area that houses an ISAF/NATO command center. (Via The Australian.) In related news, the British Embassy in Kabul said on June 9 that the Afghan detainees will be handed over very soon, reports TOLO.

Earlier Reports:
June 9, 2013 -- 7:30 PM CDT -- A major terrorist offensive is occurring now at Kabul International Airport. Large explosions and gunfire have been heard, suicide bombers are intruding, and there are reports of insurgents firing rockets. Targeted areas seem to include NATO and US Air Force areas, a counter narcotics building. The attack began around 4:20 AM local time. See current time and weather in Kabul.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. "Spokesman [Zabiullah] Mujahid in a text message to journalists claiming responsibility for #Kabul attack on military side of the airport," tweeted Sharifullah Sahak ‏(@sharifsahak), a journalist working for The New York Times in Kabul.

Chicago News Bench was the first to speculate that the attack might be reprisal for the arrest of a Taliban leader today: "An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and two other extremists during an operation in Kandahar City, Kandahar province, today. The leader oversees a group of extremists involved in improvised explosive devices operations in Kandahar City. He has a history of building multiple types of IEDs and directing his subordinates to carry out attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Kandahar City." (Source: ISAF news release, 9 June 20131TV Kabul apparently agrees with Chicago News Bench's assessment, later quoting the same ISAF news release. (Thanks for reading CNB, 1TV!)

"One insurgent detonated himself at compound entrance in the centre of the city at the start of fighting, which left several buildings destroyed or damaged by rocket-propelled grenades, gunfire and explosions," reports The Telegraph UK. "One policeman, two civilians and all four militants died in that attack, with the government lauding the response of the Kabul security forces for preventing further casualties."

The US embassy in Kabul was on lockdown for a while but seems to be in "all clear" status as of approximately 8:15 PM CDT. The embassy earlier confirmed an "on-going attack" in Kabul, the capitol city. The US embassy is located next to NATO's ISAF headquarters (International Security Assistance Force). SEE MAPAt 8:00 PM CDT, ISAF tweeted, "Shelter in Place lifted, Camp Lockdown still in effect at ISAF HQ."

Unique Video Documentary Examines the Sacrifices - and Physics - of D-Day Invasion of Normandy

June 6, 2013 - It was 69 years ago today that American soldiers, along with others from Allied nations, invaded the coast of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France in WWII. It was one of the deadliest days for Allies during World War Two, but one that turned the tide against Hitler's Nazi Regime. The invasion of Normandy was the biggest invasion ever made from the sea.

This video documentary (below) is a great look at the sacrifices made by so many soldiers on June 6, 1944. "Surviving D-Day: Omaha Beach 1944" not only examines the soldiers' struggles on that day, but gives us a fascinating look at "behind the scenes" factors that determined successes and failures: Magicians, the physics of water, breakfast choices and more. This is like no documentary about World War II that you've ever seen...

North Korea Threatens Nuclear Attack on U.S.

March 7, 2013 - Could North Korea launch a nuclear attack on the United States? Probably not, but today a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said North Korea would do just that in a "preemptive" strike.

The reason: The United Nations Security Council today unanimously passed Resolution 2094 by a vote of 15-0. The resolution calls for strict new sanctions to punish North Korea for its most recent nuclear test, which was conducted on February 12. This is the fourth time the U.N. has slapped NK with sanctions as punishment for its pursuit of nuclear weapons. The U.N. vote has the lunatics in NK's capitol city, Pyongyang, in fits of rage.

Could China-Japan Dispute Over Tiny Islands Cause World War Three?

Chinese pilots and Jian-10 fighters (photo: Xinhua)
Dec. 27, 2012 - Will the tensions between Iran and Israel trigger World War Three? Many would bet on, and it is certainly an obvious situation that is ripe for military conflict. But some experts think an argument between China and Japan is a more likely scenario, one that could trigger another world war.

The China-Japan dispute over three seemingly unimportant islands is not getting the attention it deserves. Professor Hugh White of National University in Australia, a defense expert, has made news this week by writing that the disagreement over the islands could cause Japan and China to stumble into full-blown shooting war with each other. He says the United States, and possibly other nations, would probably get sucked into the fight. (More about Prof. White below.)

Japan says "Senkaku" but China says "Diaoyu."
Both nations say "hands off."
Both Japan and China are making provocative and self-serving statements for all of the usual reasons: Propaganda, bluster, and national pride. While the Chinese government says that today's "harassment" by Japan "was meant to escalate the situation," China itself has been doing its best to rathet up the tension as well. Back in August, Chinese citizens were whipped into a frenzy of nationalistic furor over the dispute, rioting in some cities after Japanese activists landed on one of the Senkaku / Diaoyu islands claimed by both Beijing and Tokyo (see video report). A survey showed that 87 percent of Chinese citizens have a negative opinion of Japan at the end of 2012, up from 65.9% in 2011.

The disputed islands are called "Senkaku" by Japan and "Diaoyu" by China.  The islands are in the East China Sea (see map), and are also claimed by Taiwan. They are tiny, but are on a strategically important shipping route. In addition, however, the tiny islands sit atop large deposits of hydrocarbon petroleum and natural gas, discovered in the 1970s. Not surprisingly, that's when China and Taiwan began claiming the little islands.

Japan has long claimed that it has controlled the islands from 1895 until surrendered to the U.S. in 1945, at the end of World War II. The U.S. controlled the islands until 1972, when it returned them to Japan’s control. China, however, claims to have discovered the islands in the 14th century and to have controlled them since then.

Today, China is accusing Japan of deliberately trying to escalate the already tense situation:
A Chinese government spokesman Thursday [Dec. 27] said a maritime surveillance plane was harassed by Japanese military aircraft while patrolling the airspace near the disputed Diaoyu islands," reports TwoCircles.com. "Shi Qingfeng, spokesman for the State Oceanic Administration, said Japan's action was meant to escalate the situation and it should bear the consequences, Xinhua reported. Shi said the Chinese plane was conducting a routine patrol in the airspace over the East China Sea about 150 km from the Diaoyu islands. He said the flight route used by the Chinese plane has been used by Chinese surveillance aircraft since 2007. "The Japanese side's disturbance was intended to cause confusion and distort the truth," he said.
Harbin Y-12, Chinese surveillance aircraft
For months, both China and Japan have been conducting military exercises near and over the islands, often getting uncomfortably close to each other. God forbid there is an accident or misunderstanding.

Earlier this week, says International Business Times (IBT), "Japanese and Chinese military made contact near the disputed islands. The Y-12, a Chinese maritime surveillance aircraft that was cruising around the disputed territories, was intercepted by several Japanese Air Self-Defense forces."

"Up to eight F-15 jets were scramble by the JASDF (Japan Air Self Defense Force) in the morning of Dec. 13 (02.00 GMT – 11.00 LT)," reported The Aviationist, "after a Chinese Harbin Y-12 maritime surveillance aircraft skirted one of the disputed islands in the East China Sea." Japan said China was violating its airspace. China, however, considers that to be their own airspace.

PROF. HUGH WHITE, "THIS IS HOW WARS USUALLY START"

Prof. Hugh White (see bio)
"Australian National University professor Hugh White," reports The Japan Daily Press, "also a former Australian defense official, believes that the recent violation of Japanese airspace by Chinese planes and Japan’s election of a new, nationalist-leaning prime minister are sure signs that the two Asian superpowers are heading to war within the next year. In an opinion piece for the Sydney Morning Herald, White writes that the tensions developing now between the two countries are the among the conditions that have led to war many times in history, even when conflict is in no one’s interest."

The U.S. could become embroiled in a China-Japan war because of "America's recent pivot to Asia, which has sought to increase its military presence in various parts of Asia, posing a threat to China," says IBT. "In return, China has pushed back against U.S. pressure. China's formidable military developments, including a new fighter jet and aircraft carrier, has both Japan and the U.S. anxious."

Prof. White, says The Japan Daily Press, "feels that China is attempting to challenge the U.S. and President Barack Obama’s 'pivot to Asia,' itself a response to China’s growing power and territorial claims in the region. He believes that the tit-for-tat dispute over the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea is what inevitably leads to someone opening fire."

THE OBAMA "PIVOT"

By "Obama's pivot," Prof. White was referring to the Obama administration’s strategic “pivot” from the Middle East to East Asia.

Prof. White wrote that warning in a column that was published by The Sydney Morning Herald on Dec. 26. It's ominous title was "Caught in a bind that threatens an Asian war nobody wants." The column start with, "THIS is how wars usually start: with a steadily escalating stand-off over something intrinsically worthless. So don't be too surprised if the US and Japan go to war with China next year over the uninhabited rocks that Japan calls the Senkakus and China calls the Diaoyu islands. And don't assume the war would be contained and short."

The vision of a China-Japan shooting war is not some lone, crazy vision held only by Prof. White. Many are worried about it, actually, as indicated by a Dec. 17 article at CurrentIntelligence.net (with my emphasis added):
As tensions persist between China and Japan over the disputed islands in the East China Sea, the United States faces the almost impossible task of simultaneously reassuring and constraining its regional allies, while ensuring that it does not escalate its own tensions with Beijing. On one level it is hard to see how China and Japan could become so consumed over a small set of remote islands and it remains unclear how serious the crisis is. Yet, over the past several months, Chinese and Japanese ships have been patrolling the same waters with both laying territorial claims to the area.  And, earlier this fall, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned that the escalating tensions and close proximity of Chinese and Japanese vessels could lead to some triggering event and conflict.

RIP, Charles Durning. War Hero, Actor Dead at 89

Charles Durning, 1923-2012
Dec. 25, 2012 - Actor Charles Durning, star of stage and screen, died yesterday in his New York City home at the age of 89. The Hollywood Reporter says that his agent "told The Associated Press that he died Dec. 24 of natural causes."

Durning was one of the greats of Hollywood, equally commanding in both comedic or dramatic roles. Durning's 50-year acting career included roles in film, television and Broadway. He played supporting roles in memorable movies such as "Tootsie," "Dog Day Afternoon," "The Hudsucker Proxy," "Home for the Holidays," "Dick Tracy" and more.

"Durning also was an accomplished stage actor and once said he preferred doing plays because of the immediacy they offered," reports Reuters. "He gained his first substantial acting experience through the New York Shakespeare Festival starting in the early 1960s and won a Tony Award for playing Big Daddy in a 1990 Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

Military Hero: Acting was not the most impressive aspect of Charles Durning. He was also a highly-decorated soldier in World War II. In real life, Durning's is a story of incredible heroism. For his service during World War II, notes Military Money Matters, "Charles Durning was awarded the Silver Star Medal and three Purple Hearts."

Durning's death came on the same day as that of another great actor, Jack Klugman, who died of natural causes in his home in Northridge, CA.

Taliban Attack On Pakistan Airbase Foiled

PAF Kamra - Photo: AFP
August 16, 2012 - Yesterday's assault on a key northern Pakistan airbase was successfully repelled. Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Minhas base at the town of Kamra outside Attock, was attacked by nine heavily armed members of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The pre-dawn attack happened at 2:00 a.m. on August 16, Pakistan time. The attackers were dressed in military fatigues. Most also wore suicide vests.

The militants used rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, reports Reuters today, "in a brazen challenge to the nuclear-armed country’s powerful military." Only one aircraft was damaged, says Reuters. A report at Radio Australia says that two Pakistani soldiers were killed in the attack and that the base commander was shot in the shoulder as he led the counterattack but is in stable condition.

When the attackers neared aircraft hangars, reports The Express Tribune, "Security forces opened fire when militants approached aircraft hangars, prompting other militants to fire rocket-propelled grenades from outside the base’s walls, said the air force spokesperson."

All nine attackers were killed by Air Force troops, the Tribune report says. Eight died inside the airbase boundary wall and one "exploded himself outside the perimeters where he was hiding," the air force said. The fighting went on for over two hours. Millitary spokesperson Tariq Mahmood confirmed the base was "totally safe," says the Tribune story.

AIR BASE NOT NUCLEAR: Nearly all of the media reports about this attack have said that Minhas Airbase houses nuclear weapons. This appears to be false, however. Reuters quoted an air force spokesman who said that the Minhas airbase has no nuclear weapons. In fact, Reuters quoted him as saying that, "No air base is a nuclear air base in Pakistan."

UPDATE 2: Taliban Attack On Pakistan Airbase Foiled

UPDATE 1: IT'S ALL UNDER CONTROL. A report by SiasiTV (Pakistan) says that the situation is "under control now. Terrorists didn't get to destroy a jet due to prompt action of forces." (See their video, below, and Siasi's page on Facebook for updates.)

Earlier Reports:

PAKISTAN - A Pakistan Air Force base is under attack, probably by Taliban militants. PAF Kamra Airbase (also called PAF Minhas Airbase) is thought to have nuclear weapons. [Map]

The gun fighting was ongoing, according to reports of 8:00 p.m. EDT/New York time. Earliest reports said that as many as nine militants "wearing military uniforms had attacked the airbase," according to Tribune.com.pk.

"The militants were said to be armed with automatic weapons, grenades and suicide vests," reports Dawn.com (Pakistan). "Intense exchange of fire between militants and forces ensued after the attackers infiltrated the base."  Dawn also notes that Kamra airbase "is a heavily guarded compound with the Pakistan Air Force’s Kamra Aeronautical Complex in its vicinity, where Pakistan assembles and overhauls fighter jets in collaboration with China. Located about 70 kms from the Pakistani capital Islamabad, the base is known to house the PAF’s JF-7 Thunder and Mirage jets."  Dawn says that "least 30 aircraft were on the base" according to sources.

The airbase, in Punjab province, is approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) northwest of Islamabad, Pakistan's capitol city. The attackers are most likely Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Business Insider reports that gunmen have "attacked and entered an air force base in central Pakistan." The attack came Thursday, Aug. 16 local time.

The Pakistani air calling the attackers “terrorists,” which the Pakistanis often call the Taliban and similar groups, says Reuters. Mulitple reports say that the "intense" and "heavy" gunfire has been ongoing for at least three hours. The Business Insider story cites multiple news sources.  For live updates, see "Kamra airbase attack: Live updates" at Tribune.com.pk.

Nukes: Come and get 'em
Intelligence knew that this specific attack was probable. Tribune.com.pk reported that the threat was great on August 10. "The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is planning attacks on the Pakistan Air Force Base and other military and security establishments in Lahore before Eid," reporter Asad Kharal wrote, "according to intelligence reports received by the Home Department."

N. Korea Wants $65 Trillion From U.S. For Compensation

North Korea wants $65 Trillion (US dollars) for 60 years of "hostility." What makes the North Korean request so bizarre is the fact that they started the war for which they now want us to pay them damages. On June 25, 1950, the North Korean People's Army (NKPA) invaded South Korea across the 38th Parallel with 135,000 men. The South Korean military was badly outgunned and outnumbered and suffered heavy casualties. North Korean forces entered Seoul on June 28. The first battle between the U.S. Army and the NKPA was on July 5, 1950. (Source) In other words, North Korea started the war. Comrade Obama responded to the North Korean demand. The Associated Press reports today that "The Obama administration ridiculed North Korea on Friday for claiming $65 trillion from the United States in Korean War damages, saying the communist nation is an economic 'basket case' due its own failed policies." I do believe that this is the first time I have ever agreed with His Regime. Before the U.S. entered the war, however, it called on the United Nations on June 27th 1950, "to use force to get the North Koreans out as they had ignored the Security Council’s resolution of June 25th. This was also voted for and once again the Russians could not use their veto as they were still boycotting the United Nations..... On September 15th 1950, United Nations troops landed in an amphibious assault at Inchon. The landing was a huge success and the United Nations effectively cut the North Korean army in half and pushed them out of South Korea. MacArthur then advanced into North Korea – despite the warnings from Communist China. This resulted in a Chinese attack on United Nations troops and between November 1950 and January 1951, the Chinese managed to push back the United Nations force. After a clash with President Truman, MacArthur was sacked and the war degenerated into a war of stalemate with neither the United Nations or the Chinese managing to gain the upper hand." (Source) The fighting stopped in July 27, 1953, when the UN and North Korea signed an armistice. A permanent peace treaty between South Korea and North Korea has never been signed (source). It has been more than 50 years since the Korean War Armistice Agreement was signed "and what was intended to be a temporary measure is currently the only truce that prevents resuming the war. In 1954, an unsuccessful attempt was made to create a formal peace agreement. To date, no peace treaty has ever been signed and the demilitarization zone (DMZ) is still defended today by South Korean and American troops on one side and North Korean troops on the other." (Source) No peace treaty. Only an armistice, or cease-fire. Technically, we are still in a state of war with North Korea. (Be sure to watch the video below.) Since then, South Korea has rebuilt itself with U.S. aid and trade, and a lot of hard work and ingenuity by the South Koreans. Their recovery could not have happened without having a democratic and capitalist system. On the other hand, North Korea remains Communist and has been patronized and "protected" over the past 60 years by the communist Soviet Union (USSR) and China. No attempt was ever made by either of those powers to democratize North Korea or to improve their economic system. It remains a heavy handed dictatorship living in isolated paranoia and bitterness. And now they have the nerve to ask for compensation? If anybody should ask for compensation, it's South Korea, the United States and the other nations who joined the United Nations in keeping South Korea free from the boot heel of communist tyranny. South Korea was damaged directly, obviously, while every participating nation defending it lost men and women in battle, as well as considerable treasure. North Korea should be apologizing still for its unprovoked aggression and its continued beligerence and its attempts at nuclear blackmail. On a personal note, I'd like to sue Egypt for compensation for more than 3,000 years of continuous hostility toward my Jewish father's ancestors. How Israel Should Have Handled The Free Gaza Flotilla

If I had been in charge of the Israeli response to the recent, ill-fated 'Free Gaza' Flotilla, I would have handled it much differently. As it happens, Israeli soldiers boarded the Mavi Marmara, one of the ships in the flotilla, and all hell broke loose when they were violently attacked. The actual violence is not Israel's big problem. Rather, it's their own failed public relations and the fact that so much of the world is eager to condemn them without even a fair hearing. What would you have done? Let's say you're a high-ranking security person in Israel's government. Three ships are heading toward your country, which is surrounded on all sides by hostile nations and has hundreds of thousands of terrorists inside its borders. The organizers of the ships are known to be sympathetic toward the terrorists, but they claim that they're only bringing "relief" materials to them: Medical supplies, toilet paper, and other items. They make it known that they will put to port in the portion of your country that is controlled by terrorists sworn to destroy you, but all you ask of the ships is that they dock elsewhere first so that you can inspect them to be certain they are not carrying weapons the your enemies. You stand firm and insist that your country be able to inspect any ship, as allowed under international law, that comes into your territory. Does that sound unreasonable? It doesn't, if you happen to be reasonable. If, however, you are an islamist muslim who hates Israel, it might irritate you. Unless, however, you're an enemy of Israel and you want to bait them into an international incident. How to do that? You load three ships with some faithful crew who are in on the plot, bring a few hundred useful idiot passengers on board, and defy the reasonable requests of the Israelis to inspect your ships. Oh, and you have a bunch of items that are "not weapons" stacked on the decks of the ships that actually could be used for mayhem. Items such as axes, long knives, steel pipes. No guns, of course, because guns would be too incriminating. Remember, your objective is to force Israel into an embarassing and "violent" encounter with "peaceful" relief workers. Israel's response was weak, and also stupid. Sure, hind sight is 20/20, but I'm amazed that Israel did not do what I'm about to say I would have done. I would have surrounded the flotilla with my naval forces and prevented them from proceeding until they allowed us to board the ships one by one and be searched. In a crucial difference from what Israel did, I would have done this in broad daylight, not at night, and made sure that the international press was present. I would have have my media people make it known that the ships were violating international law by refusing inspection. I would have kept the flotilla sitting where we stopped them, at sea, for weeks or months if necessary, providing them with food and water and medical supplies until such time that they allowed our forces to board them and peacefully inspect them. If no weapons or contraban was found, they would be allowed to proceed. If, during this standoff, any of the ships fired on our forces, we would respond with deadly fire. Instead, Israel walked into trap with its eyes wide open. The night vision videos released by the IDF are difficult to see because color and detail are washed out. The IDF videos are open to criticism of doctoring and editing. Had the international press been present, embedded if you will, it would be much more difficult for the critics of Israel to condemn video from, say, BBC or CNN or AFP. Israel might get another chance, but I fear they will blow that as well. A June 1 report in The Jerusalem Post quotes a "top Navy commander" as saying that "Israel will use more aggressive force in the future to prevent ships from breaking the sea blockade on the Gaza Strip." Did they learn nothing in the past 48 hours? They were baited into appearing violent once, and now some idiot Navy commander promises "more aggressive force?" I agree that aggressive force, if warranted, should be applied. But Israel must remember that, fairly or unfairly, they are judged differently than other nations. They must take extra care to avoid the appearance of using violence wantonly, and only the most convincing evidence will hold their critics at bay. (No pun intended.) Update, June 3: Ironically, Hamas has since refused to allow trucks filled with "aid" items from the ships into Gaza. “Hamas has refused to allow those trucks to go in,” a senior official from the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) told The Jerusalem Post, “and if the aid is so urgent, my question is, why are they not allowing it into Gaza?” (JawaReport) RELATED: Video Shows Passengers Attacking Israeli Soldiers‎ WCBS-TV Israel Transfers Mavi Marmara Cargo to Gaza‎ Arutz Sheva Israeli Boarding of Blockade Busting Ship Was Legal Fort Liberty Helsinki Principles on the Law of Maritime Neutrality Peace activists acted more like provocateurs Calgary Herald

IDF Videos Show Closeup of Violent Ship Passengers

In the top video here (taken by an Israeli Defence Force naval boat) we see the "peaceful" passengers of the Mavi Marmara, one of the ships in the 'Free Gaza' Flotilla, violently attacking IDF soldiers "who were trying to board the ship after having sent repeated requests for the boat to change course." The voices you hear in the first video are IDF personnel speaking Hebrew. In the second video, (no sound), IDF provides a closeup view. "Large groups of passengers surrounded soldiers and beat them with metal poles and chairs," writes the IDF, "and threw one soldier over the side of the ship. Some passengers grabbed pistols from the IDF soldiers and opened fire. As a result of the attacks, seven IDF soldiers were injured, and nine of the passengers were killed. The 'Free Gaza' Flotilla had publicly insisted on their non-violent intentions, however their violent attack on the IDF soldiers was clearly premeditated. They had knives, metal rods, firebombs and other items ready to use. " The IDF posted these videos on YouTube on May 31, 2010. Update, June 3: Ironically, Hamas has since refused to allow trucks filled with "aid" items from the ships into Gaza. “Hamas has refused to allow those trucks to go in,” a senior official from the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) told The Jerusalem Post, “and if the aid is so urgent, my question is, why are they not allowing it into Gaza?” (JawaReport)

JAMAICA IN CRISIS, "AT WAR WITH ITSELF" (UPDATE 4)

Kingston, Jamaica - Jamaica's capital continues to be a war zone, as more than 1,000 police and soldiers "assaulted a public housing complex occupied by heavily armed gangsters defending an alleged drug lord wanted by the U.S., waging a major offensive in the heart of West Kingston's ramshackle slums." (Associated Press) The man they are after is Christopher "Dudus" Coke (photo). Update: Siege in Kingston now "quieter," but continues. Could flare up again any moment... BBC video report (updated at 2:08 GMT, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 3:08 UK) In another report, by AFP, hospital sources "said they saw more than 60 bodies, although police put the death toll at 27. But Prime Minister Bruce Golding warned the figures would likely rise, and police late Tuesday reported several murders." Gunshots and large explosions can be seen and heard in the capitol city, and the violence is said to be spreading. The Kingston airport was closed intermittently yesterday and is reportedly closed again today. (Press TV) Some excellent video reports to bring to your attention: The first, by CNN, posted today at 9:36 a.m. EDT. The others are posted at Jamaica News Network (JNN) Nightly News (via RadioJamaica). JNN has a series of reports posted, allowing you to see the history of this story as it developed. The Jamaica Gleaner reports this morning that "The armed forces yesterday strongly repelled the relentless firepower of gunmen, allegedly from Fletcher's Land, who launched an assault on the Central Police Station in Jamaica's capital, Kingston.... The gunmen, apparently emboldened by the attacks on six police stations a day earlier, turned their venom on the Central Police Station. But alert crime fighters hit back with a vengeance, resulting in a fierce gun battle around the headquarters of Kingston CIB. A day earlier, the Hannah Town Police Station was attacked, pillaged and burnt. So too were the Fletcher's Land, Darling Street and Denham Town stations in western Kingston. The Spanish Town and Cross Roads stations were also fired on." The Jamaica Observer gives a chilling reports that "criminal gangs aligned to the Opposition People's National Party (PNP) in the Maxfield Avenue area of Whitfield Town are being paid up to $100,000 per day to join in the.... resistance to the security forces' attempt to arrest Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke." This has frightening implications: If Coke can hire more criminals, and if the anti-government sentiment is flamed, this bad situation could become much worse. AFP reports that his supporters say Coke "is a local hero for helping residents pay bills, and even send children to school. Coke himself says he is merely a businessman. His supporters have stockpiled arms, attacked police and set up barricades around Tivoli Gardens, which is also the parliamentary district of Prime Minister Bruce Golding." The U.S. Dept. of State has warned Jamaican officials that "The possibility exists that unrest could spread beyond the general Kingston area." The State Dept. also warns travelers to avoid Kingston and surrounding areas. Jamaica's Ministry of National Security issued a statement on May 24: This Joint Military/Police operation is aimed at executing a warrant issued by the Courts of Jamaica for the arrest of Michael Christopher Coke otherwise called "Dudus" as well as to restore the area to stability after three consecutive days of barricading by criminal elements and wanton attacks on the police force. Full Statement... MiamiNewTimes reports that Dudus "has turned a Kingston slum into his own personal bunker to avoid extradition to the U.S, has forced his country into a state of emergency. To local law-enforcement officials, the situation appears all too familiar. Coke's ultra-violent cartel, called 'The Shower Posse' for its members tendency to indiscriminately shower enemies and bystanders alike, seized South Florida in the late-'80s."

Israel Preps for War with Iran, Syria Beats War Drums

Meanwhile, Trouble in West Bengal, India (with video)

Trouble in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal continues. According to the Press Trust of India today, "The West Bengal government is considering banning the CPI (Maoists) after the Centre's suggestion to the state government in this regard following the Naxal violence in Lalgarh." Maoists are left-wing extremists (radical communists). In West Bengal, the local Maoists are also called "Naxalites." Several days ago, according to Naxalwatch, "Groups of Left-wing extremists, which have taken control over almost 50 villages in Lalgarh, consist not only of cadres operating in West Bengal but also from neighbouring Jharkhand and Orissa, Central security agency sources said." A report in The Economist explains that "Naxalites" get their name from "the district of Naxalbari in West Bengal where they staged an uprising in 1967, they are these days almost a nationwide force. Greeted by China's People's Daily at the height of the Cultural Revolution as “a peal of spring thunder”, they were almost wiped out in the 1970s, as the Indian government repressed them, and Maoism went out of fashion, even in its homeland. In India they splintered into various armed factions, of which the biggest were the People's War Group and the Maoist Communist Centre. These merged and formed the CPI (Maoist) party in September 2004. P.V. Ramana, of the Observer Research Foundation in Delhi, estimates the Naxalites now have 9,000-10,000 armed fighters, with access to about 6,500 firearms. There are perhaps a further 40,000 full-time cadres." Update - Tamil Tigers "Defeated"

It seems to be "over," but some small pockets of fighting remain in Sri Lanka. As of 15:45 GMT, these are some of the latest headlines we have found:

Sri Lanka Wiping Out Tamil Tigers

Update, 16 May 2009: Click for updated headlines about Tamil Tigers "Defeated" The "tigers" of Sri Lanka are endangered - finally. Not cats but terrorists, the Tamil Tigers are a terrorist group that has fought a bloody war against the Sri Lankan government for 26 years. Now, the government is engaged in a big push to wipe out the rebels in a bloody and frantic campaign. "Sri Lankan troops have captured the last patch of coastline held by the Tamil Tigers and the rebels would shortly be left without any territory, a top military source said" - Agence-France Presse Over the years, Tamil Tiger bombings, assassinations and other atrocities have occasionally spilled onto mainland Asia, to nearby India. Since 1983, more than 70,000 people have died in the on-again-off-again civil strife in Sri Lanka, which became independent from Britain in 1948. (See a timeline of the civil war here.) Sri Lankan troops seized the entire coastline for the first time in its 25-year war with the Tamil Tigers, the military said, cutting off escape for separatist rebels now facing total destruction. Two divisions marching from north and south sealed the coast, while a third completed the encirclement of the Tigers and their leaders, now trapped in barely a square kilometre and without their umbilical access to the sea. Full Story at ABC News Australia. The Sri Lankan strategy seems to be working, according to an Agence-France Presse report in the National Post (Canada): "They are slowly giving up. They are blowing up whatever arms and ammunition they have," Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said of the remnants of the once-powerful separatist Tamil Tiger army. A military spokesman said about 10,000 civilians had managed to flee to government areas on Friday, and that there was now "hardly anybody left" in the rebel zone on the northeast coast. 1,000 Murderers Hunted in Bangladesh

The aftermath of the failed paramilitary rebellion in Bangladesh last week is ugly, very ugly. It shows the poor, overcrowded nation to be much less stable than widely believed. The group, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), is not merely a group that tried to take over the government, it was - apparently - a planned slaughter. BDR was unhappy about wages and other conditions. More than 1,000 border guards were charged Sunday with murder and arson in a uprising that left at least 148 people dead or missing, most of them army officers whose bodies were hurriedly discarded by the mutineers. The details of what the prime minister called "a planned massacre" emerged after the government withdrew its promise of amnesty and sought to repair its increasingly tense relations with the military. More from AP/Yahoo! News... The mutiny caught many Bangladeshis by surprise. Ashik Uzzaman is a software engineer in Bangladesh, and wrote this on his blog: Just when I was thinking we (Bangladeshis) are moving forward with the newly elected Govt bringing hopes for a better democracy, I was shocked with this week's BDR Mutinee and massacre killings of Bangladesh Army's high officials in Pilkhana right in the enter of the capital city Dhaka. This is so sad that it can't be described in written words. ABC Australia reports that any captured mutineers will be executed. Troops have spent the weekend recovering bodies from shallow graves at the headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles and the Government is calling on the United Nations and Scotland Yard to assist in the investigation and the identification of bodies. The two-day mutiny was sparked by a dispute over pay and conditions and began last Wednesday when members of the Bangladesh Rifles opened fire on their own officers. More from www.abc.net.au... It should be noted that the prime minister of Bangladesh is also asking for assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (United States). RELATED: Pakistan Connection to Bangladesh Mutiny? BREAKING, 0600 GMT: They thought it was over on Wednesday, but a paramilitary mutiny in Bangladesh has flared up again, and it's spreading throughout the counrty. Excerpts from late news reports: Dhaka (AP/The Hindu): Police and witnesses say gunshots have rocked several border guard posts across Bangladesh, suggesting a spreading insurrection over demands for better pay despite the surrender of many mutineers in the capital. Police official Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury says mutineers fired shots at the commanding officer's residence at a border guard post in the southern town of Tekhnaf early Thursday, sending him fleeing. Dhaka (24/7 News Network): Even as the rebel soldiers who revolted against the officers at the BDR Headquarters in Dhaka yesterday, surrendered after being assured of amnesty by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the mutiny spread to other areas of the country. The rebel soldiers at BDR Headquarters laid down arms and surrendered before the Army yesterday. However, fresh gunbattle reported from Rajshahi, Feni and Chittagong, as rebel soldiers are still holding up in these cities. FLASH: Sec. Rice Hints at Punitive Attacks Against Pakistan

The Bench front page... In what may be her last, and perhaps boldest, move as the US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice told Pakistani leadership that they cannot wash themselves of any responsibility for the Mumbia terrorist acts that originated from Pakistan. Punitive military strikes were threatened. The Times of India: Although US officials have not outright approved immediate punitive Indian strikes against terrorist targets in Pakistan, it is clear Rice has bought time for Islamabad to prove its bonafides and promise of cooperation. (Source) That's Rice grabbing Pakistan by the balls. Pakistan has a ''special responsibility'' and needs to act ''urgently'' she said, even as India has indicated it will wait for a Pakistani response to its demands before any punitive action. "Before any punitive action" is Rice squeezing hard, very hard. The response would be not the US alone, not India alone, but a coalition of sorts. The Times quotes Robert Kagan, a Carnegie Endowment analyst, as saying that "international community [could] declare that parts of Pakistan have become ungovernable and a menace to international security," which would theoretically provide a justification for those punitive strikes against Pakistan.
