BBC REPORT: WHAT HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING?

Gee, that's a good question. Wasn't it about 7 or 8 years ago that Al Gore said we had only 10 years left before the Earth became a big, hot, glowing ember because of global warming? Uh huh. I saw an awful lot of liberals shivering this "summer" in Chicago, and now this from the BBC: This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998. Wait, wait, hold on. That headline comes as no surprise to the level-headed people who did not attach their lips to Al Gore's rump years ago. We've been saying the Church of Global Warming is a false church for years, yet so many people simply would not listen... But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures. And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise. You must read the full article. Obama's Brother Arrested on Drug Charges

During his campaign last year, Barack Obama said we are all our brothers' keepers. He said it again in mid-December: "Now, more than ever, we must rededicate ourselves to the notion that we share a common destiny as Americans - that I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper." (Source) REALLY? What a hypocrite. Barack Obama has made millions of dollars from the sales of his books. Yet he has allowed some of his relatives to continue living in squalor. His half-brother George, for example, who gained worldwide attention during the campaign for living on less than $20 a year in a shanty town in Kenya. Now, poor George, half-brother of Barack Obama, is in legal trouble: Barack Obama's Kenyan half-brother, George, has been arrested by police in Nairobi on suspicion of possessing marijuana....President Obama's young half-sibling was in the headlines last year after it was revealed that he was living in a corrugated iron shack in a sprawling slum as his brother ran for the most powerful job in the world. (Source) So, is Barack Obama his brother's keeper? Perhaps he thinks not. Obama said, above, that we have a "common destiny as Americans." Hmmm. This is problematic, because Kenyan George is not an American. Furthermore, Obama did not say that he is "my half-brother's keeper," so that could be his loophole. Poor George, living in squalor and now in legal hot water, can expect no help from his wealthy and powerful brother Barack because he's not an American and shares only one parent. Perhaps, then, Barack Obama is only half sincere when he tells us that we're all the keepers of our brothers and sisters. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 24th, 7:00 p.m., at the Gale Community Center (Howard and Marsfield). I hosted a meeting last April at my Ward Office to introduce the arts project and explain the commissioning process. Howard El Grand Opening, El Flag Day Celebration and El Art Festival Headline Los Weekend Events!

Saturday promises to be a very busy day in the 49th Mental Ward.

Topping off the events is the official Grand Opening of the new Howard El Station. I actually had nothing to do with this project, but I'm going to hog in on the glory of it. Join CTA President Ron Huberman and me as we cut the ribbon for the new station on Saturday, June 14th at 2 p.m. The new station is located immediately north of the CTA parking garage at Gateway Centre.

Billions of CTA commuters have already used the station since its unofficial opening last Monday, and I've heard rave reviews from many. Oh, there are still drunkards and crackheads pissing and crapping in the stairwells late at night, and there is often life threatening danger on the street just outside. But it looks nice, doesn't it? It's certainly a significant improvement over the old station. If you haven't had a chance to visit the new station, stop by the ribbon cutting ceremony and check it out! Be sure to tell your life insurance agent that you're going to this dangerous part of Rogers Park!

Earlier in the day, Congresschick Jan Schakowsky will headline a Flag Day Celebration at the Lake Shore Rehabilitation and Health Centre, 7200 N. Sheridan Road (at Touhy). This makes even me laugh, because Jan is all in favor of letting people spit on the flag - or even burn it! The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 14th at 10 a.m., and will feature a flag raising ceremony and flag etiquette demonstration by cadets from the Rickover Naval Academy. This makes me laugh cynically, too, for Jan and I are both rabidly anti-military and secretly hate those little baby-killers-in-training. But it makes for good press, so what the hell.

Finally, stop by the "Artists Up Against the Wall Festival" in Loyola Park. This also makes me chuckle. To think that people are so freeking stupid that they pay $30 to be able to paint over a really shitty, chipping wall. Ha! Their pitiful "artwork" will look like crap before Thanksgiving. Anyway, the 15th annual fest runs from 9 a.m. to dusk Saturday and Sunday. More than 100 area artists and wanna-be artists collaborate on a 500-foot mural along a wall that was poorly prepared, same as they did last year. Thank God there are so many stupid, gullible people in the 49th Ward! THe wall extends roughly from the Pratt Pier to the Morse Avenue streetend. This year's theme is "Blow Me," inspired by my past efforts to obtain oral sex from women near a sculpture called "Wind Form." Appropriate, eh? Hey, while I have your attention, be sure to watch the little video below, done by my pal Tom Mannis over at The Bench!

Joe Moore and liquor stores just seem to go together. He takes their money for his campaign chest, then pretends that he's tough on them. What a lousy actor this Alderman Joe Moore is. In Rogers Park, Soo Liquors is infamous on troubled W. Morse Avenue for loitering scumbags. Recently, Alderman Moore "got tough" with the liquor store. But his tough act is the stuff of wimp legend, and it ain't flying in the 49th Ward. We've seen this bullshit before. From this week's News-Star: The storeowners are also required to attend monthly CAPS beat meetings, join the business and economic development corporation for Rogers Park DevCorp North, and buy an awning sign. The memorandum does not name a specific time period that Soo Liquors has to get the business under control. Last Thursday, News-Star visited Soo Liquors and purchased a 24-ounce can of Colt 45 malt liquor and a $2.99 bottle of cheap rum. When asked why the store was still selling malt liquor after the owners agreed not to, the store manager said that "Colt 45 was OK" because it had slightly less alcohol content than other brands. Almost 1,000 dead from cold snap in Afghanistan Kabul (AFP) Feb 16, 2008 - Nearly 1,000 people have died in heavy snowstorms and severe cold during the harshest winter to hit Afghanistan in 30 years, the disaster authority said Saturday. Officials declined to say whether or not Global Warming was responsible for the deaths. NASA: Global Warming is "Natural"

No, NASA did not put that way. Not in those words, not exactly, but their very recent report essentially says that while global climate change is happening, it's not the way Al Gore says it is. Not at all, in fact. The climate changes are actually "the result of natural ocean circulation patterns." The report is titled "NASA Sees Arctic Ocean Circulation Do an About-Face." Reporting in Geophysical Research Letters, the authors attribute the reversal to a weakened Arctic Oscillation, a major atmospheric circulation pattern in the northern hemisphere. The weakening reduced the salinity of the upper ocean near the North Pole, decreasing its weight and changing its circulation. "Our study confirms many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming," said Morison. "While some 1990s climate trends, such as declines in Arctic sea ice extent, have continued, these results suggest at least for the 'wet' part of the Arctic -- the Arctic Ocean -- circulation reverted to conditions like those prevalent before the 1990s," he added. JPL: About Face on Arctic Ocean Oscillation Implications Yet another piece of global warming hysteria disappears. From JPL : "Our study confirms many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming."

NASA Study of Arctic Oscillation and Arctic Ocean..... "The events of the 1990s may well be a preview of how the Arctic will respond over longer periods of time in a warming world," he said.

More bullshit from 49th Ward Alderman Joe "Stumpy" Moore. In spite of the fact that Moore's office removed me from their email list, a number of people always forward theirs to me. Here's the latest load of crap. From: "ward49@cityofchicago.org" To: The Bench Subject: Alderman Moore's City Council Report Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2007 ALDERMAN MOORE'S CITY COUNCIL REPORT Dear Neighbor, For most of October, my legislative life has revolved around the Mayor's proposed City Budget for 2008. I've spent countless hours reviewing multiple books issued by the Mayor's Budget Office, attending budget briefings and hearings (held all day, every day, from October 15th to October 22nd), and listening to the comments and suggestions that so many 49th Ward residents have shared by e-mail and phone. THE BENCH COMMENT: Moore wrote, "For most of October, my legislative life has..." Huh? Shouldn't he have left out the word "has" in that sentence? The report was emailed out on Tuesday, November 6. So either Moore is still high on the pain killers from his recent backyard defingering or he has a very poor command of the English language. Or, maybe, he wrote this about a week ago and just got around to sending it yesterday? But the actual budget vote is still at least one week away-- tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, November 13th. In the meantime, a more routine City Council meeting was held on Wednesday, October 31st, where the main business was the approval of resolutions and commendations, as well as new appointments. As is sometimes the case, the pre-and post-meeting activities were of greater substance. Before the meeting, SEIU Local 880 held a press conference along with Aldermen Ed Smith (28th), Denise Dixon (24th), and myself, to call on the City's Purchasing Department to deny future funding to a large for-profit home care agency, Family Home Service, which has a history of poor senior care and bad labor practices. Needless to say, when the well- being of seniors and workers are both endangered by a single cause, it is time to take action and challenge the source of the problem. THE BENCH COMMENT: The SEIU had dozens of outsiders in the 49th Ward campaigning for Moore in the last election cycle. The Bench has photos of several of them violating polling place rules. Moore is deeply indebted to the SEIU and this probably influenced his reaction to this situation. At the conclusion of its meeting, the City Council held a public hearing, in which members of the public were invited to offer their opinions about the proposed budget. This is the only time of year when the public is invited to testify before the full Council committee meetings. Approximately 35 speakers signed up to testify, with some also answering multiple questions from aldermen. Among those speaking were the president of the Civic Federation (against any new taxes, for more privatization), a Wrigleyville bar owner (explaining how increasing the liquor tax could hurt small businesses like hers), and many speakers on behalf of the Chicago Public Library (fearing that library funding would be imperiled if the property tax is not increased). THE BENCH COMMENT: Will Mr. Moore ask Harold Washington Public Library to stay open past 5:00 p.m. on weekdays so that working stiffs might be able to use it? The issues of taxes vs. services, waste vs. efficiency, and out- sourcing vs. city jobs are complex and not well-served by simplified blog-like arguments. I voiced three concerns at the public hearing: 1. I find it unfair that the libraries are being singled out in the tax debate. Ten years ago, the libraries were successful in obtaining a dedicated source of funding through the property tax, which has helped them tremendously to expand (including the construction of our own Rogers Park branch). It is simply wrong to put them on the front lines of the current fight, and I would propose that if the property tax proposal is scaled back, the burden should not fall on the libraries. 2. Privatization is not a panacea for budget woes. We have all seen with such City scandals like "Hired Truck," where private companies, especially when they are politically connected and poorly supervised, are far more costly to taxpayers than operations staffed by City workers. THE BENCH COMMENT: Privatization is not a panacea when it is supervised by corrupt public officials. The "Hired Truck" scandals stem from government officials, elected and otherwise, allowing and encouraging the corruption. 3. I've said it before, but it bears repeating: It is imperative that the Inspector General receive adequate funding and staff to carry out his mandate, not only to address corruption, but to address waste and inefficiencies in the departments. THE BENCH COMMENT: Joe Moore, like most of his colleagues on the Council, is full of crap. If he really meant this, he would call for the City Council to overturn its rule that prohibits the Chicago's Inspector General from investigating Aldermen. Pretty hypocritical, huh? Already, the hearings, the discussions, and the input from city residents are remolding the final budget. Just yesterday, Mayor Daley and his City Council allies introduced revised tax and budget proposals (reducing most of the initial proposed tax increases, including the property tax), as well as restricting new hiring, adding unpaid furlough days for City workers, and eliminating vacancies. Unfortunately, the City is also proposing delaying much needed new services, such as a six-month wait before the blue-cart recycling program is allowed to expand to additional wards, including the 49th Ward. THE BENCH COMMENT: "Much needed?" The blue-cart recycling program, which is a big cluster boondoggle, is "much needed?" Is Joe Moore kidding? Or is he correct to assume that you're really that stupid? Again, the issues are not simple and the answers not easy. I promise to keep you informed as the budget process continues. The next City Council meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, November 7th, at 10 a.m. THE BENCH COMMENT: Hey, Mister Moore, why not propose that the meetings be at 7:00 p.m., so we working stiffs can attend? The Global Warming Chill

Is the hysteria over global warming losing momentum? Maybe. "Prominent Scientists Reverse Belief in Man-made Global Warming - Now Skeptics," says the headline on The U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works's web site. Posted on May 15, the subheader says, "Growing Number of Scientists Convert to Skeptics After Reviewing New Research." Whew! This is gotta be a challenge to some people's worldview, especially those who have already swallowed Al Gore's entire PowerPoint presentation. The article on the Senate web site names prominent scientists, once advocates of the global warming scare, who are now skeptics warning us not to jump to conclusions. The site quotes them. One example: Botanist Dr. David Bellamy, a famed UK environmental campaigner, former lecturer at Durham University and host of a popular UK TV series on wildlife, recently converted into a skeptic after reviewing the science and now calls global warming fears "poppycock." According to a May 15, 2005 article in the UK Sunday Times, Bellamy said “global warming is largely a natural phenomenon. The world is wasting stupendous amounts of money on trying to fix something that can’t be fixed.” “The climate-change people have no proof for their claims. They have computer models which do not prove anything,” Bellamy added. Wow. Bellamy has, no doubt, already been labelled a know-nothing by the Goreans. The site continues: The media's climate fear factor seemingly grows louder even as the latest science grows less and less alarming by the day. Shocking! "Less alarming?" You mean, we don't have to lay awake at night anymore, losing sleep, as we worry about the coming global superstorm?
