Update 2: WLS's Don Wade Gets Chemo, Radiation After Brain Surgery

UPDATE, Dec. 14, 2012 - Sorry to see that Don Wade and Roma have decided to not return to morning drive duties at WLS-AM 890. It's understandable, though, as the stress would be difficult for Don, who is still on the mend after surgery for a brain tumor. It's the end of an era for Chicago radio.

Oct. 13, 2012 - WLS-AM (890) morning talk man Don Wade, 71, "will undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments following his recent surgery to remove a growth from his brain, according to a statement released Wednesday," reports Robert Federer at TimeOut Chicago. He will get a six-week course of chemo and radiation, to begin the week of October. 14.

Previous Post, Oct. 2, 2012:
Don Wade had "succesful" brain surgery on Thursday, Sept. 27.  The surgery reportedly went well for Don, 71 - the male half of the Don Wade and Roma show - and he is now recovering at home. He was released from the hospital on Saturday, Sept. 29. Don had a seizure on Sept. 13, and the surgery was performed to remove "a growth," possibly a brain tumor. (See previous report.)

"Don came out of it really well," said the Wade's agent Eliot Ephraim, reports Robert Feder at Time Out Chicago. The Don Wade and Roma show is broadcast live from 5-9:00 a.m., Monday-Friday. Send  get-well wishes to Don by email to getwelldon@gmail.com or by slowmail:

WLS Morning Man Don Wade To Have Brain Surgery

Don Wade and Roma (wlsam.com)
UPDATE, OCT. 2: Don Wade is recovering at home after successful brain surgery. More...

Sept. 25, 2012 - We are praying for the speedy recovery of WLS's Don Wade, the male half of the extremely popular Don Wade & Roma Show in Chicago, to pull through his health nightmare. After suffering a seizure on Sept. 13, Don will have surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. The surgery is scheduled for this Thursday. Don Wade is 71 years old.

TrueNewsUSA noted yesterday that "Don Wade, the popular conservative Republican leaning host of the morning show on WLS AM 890, will be off the air for at least a month, to receive treatment for a growth on his brain, the station announced on its website."  Don and wife Roma have been hosting the show for more than 20 years on WLS 890 AM.

Here is an excerpt from a statement released yesterday by WLS Radio:

"Don Wade had a seizure while traveling last week. After a series of tests, doctors discovered a growth on his brain. He is having surgery this week to remove the growth. Recovery from the surgery will keep Don off the air for at least four weeks. Don and Roma remain positive and optimistic..."

Send well-wishes to Don and Roma by email to getwelldon@gmail.com or by U.S. Post to:

While Don Wade is out on medical leave, the show will be hosted by self be-clowned Bruce Wolf and his anal retentive, pompous sidekick, "Cicero" Dan Proft. Why WLS allows its airwaves to be tainted by the likes of an oily weasel like Proft, who "allegedly" bullies women, is a mystery. Apparently, the management at WLS has no problem with those issues, or with the possible ethics problems of one of their talk show hosts "raising campaign funds for a second statewide political bid for governor while he is promoting himself on Chicago radio."

Herman Cain Will Replace Neal Boortz In January 2013

Neal Boortz in action
June 4, 2012 - It was announced this morning that former pizza king and GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain will replace conservative talker Neal Boortz when he retires from Atlanta's WSB Radio next January.

Cain will need little training: He has had his own talk show in the past. Cain, 66, had his own talk show on WSB radio from 2008 until 2011. That's when he left radio to run for president.

Boortz is widely known as “The Talkmaster” and “The High Priest of the Church of the Painful Truth.”

Cain posted this photo on Facebook this morning, along with this comment:

WSB Radio: I will replace Neal Boortz upon his retirement in January. The Herman Cain Show will debut on January 21, 2013! Major kudos to Neal for his 42 years behind the microphone being a bold, vocal advocate for what is right in the world...I am honored you kept my seat warm all these years. — with Neal Boortz.

“It’s time for me and my wife, Donna, to hit the road," said Boortz, to pursue their love of traveling. More at WSB's website.

Neal Boortz Faux Commencement Speech
Conservative radio talk show host Neal Boortz does not mince words, but some of his words have been given myth status by some bloggers who apparently never attended a journalism class.

When Boortz delivered the "commencement speech" to the graduating class of Texas A&M... uhm, wait, hold on.

Boortz did write a killer commencement speech, but he never delivered it at Texas A&M or anywhere else during an actual graduation ceremony. Oh, it was a real speech, and he really did deliver it (once), but it was never given as an actual commencement speech. Confused? Sure you are, but that's okay. Boortz himself titled his video "Faux Commencement Speech."

(Update, 2019: Despite exhaustive searching, we no longer find a video of Boortz's speech. Read the full text of the "Boortz Faux Commencement Speech" at Patriot Post.)

Boortz himself explains it best: "The speech was actually delivered one time .. but not at a commencement. A few years ago we filled up an auditorium at Kennesaw State College to give me the chance to don a robe and just … pretend."

The fact that Boortz never gave this speech to a graduating class in no way diminishes its power. Boortz is a brilliant writer and a talented speaker. Enjoy the speech, and share it, but please don't spread the myth that he gave it to a bunch of Aggie graduates.

Tony Peraica's New Radio Show on WIND 560 AM

Cook County Commish Tony Peraica (R-16) is one busy guy. Omnipresent on the Internet, campaigning for re-election to the Cook County Board, fighting corruption, taking care of clients in his law office, Twitter master, Facebook ninja, playing a wicked golf game, and more. Now, he's got his own, brand new radio show. "A lot of our vapid local radio political talk shows promise to be 'hard hitting,' 'in depth' and 'provocative' but never come close. Now one will. Oh baby, this one will!" So writes the admittedly biased Chicago GOP. Biased or not, their assessment of Peraica's new show has merit. Peraica, arguably, has more knowledge of Cook County than anybody else. You can listen to the show live two ways: Online or on your radio at WIND 560 AM. WIND says this about the show on their web site: Do you want open honest government and lower taxes in Cook County and Chicagoland? The Tony Peraica Show is a full hour of lively talk about everything political affecting you. It’s The Tony Peraica Show, hosted by Cook County Commissioner and Attorney Tony Peraica and co-hosted by his daughter Anisa Peraica. The show features guest interviews, listener feedback and more. It’s the Sunday night spot to get the type of intelligent talk, with a conservative twist you expect from AM 560 WIND. Tune in tonight and you'll hear me as one of Tony's guests! Obama's Assault on Broadcasters

Fairness Doctrine? Might happen, but what is already happening, however, is far more dangerous, as we see in the video below. Mark Lloyd is the FCC's new Chief Diversity Officer. Lloyd started his new job on July 29 and is already busy trying to figure out how to tax radio stations out of business. It's not a joke. That's what Lloyd is up to. Lloyd and Obama hope to destroy privately operated radio stations, eventually to bring them under government control - if not literally, then effectively. It's just one more step in Obama's march toward dictatorship. Crazy? Consider: Why else would a national leader be so eager to take away our guns, limit our free speech and bring banks, industry and health care under his control? It's as though Obama is a master sleeper agent from an enemy nation, finally fulfilling the secret mission he was given decades ago. Watch the video - it should scare the bejeezuz out of you. Get ready for state-controlled radio - and television. See related items below the video. WLS and Mancow: WTF???

UPDATE, FEB. 11, 2010: Pink slip for Erich 'Mancow' Muller - Chicago Tribune Chicago talk show host Jerry Agar no longer has his Monday-Friday gig at WLS 890 AM Chicago. That's a shame. Agar, a native of Canada, has an all-American attitude and was a welcome voice of reasoned political critique on the local airwaves. WLS, however, seemed to thing differently. Agar, a smart, decent and funny man, is being replaced by a Mancow Muller, a guy who for years had a sidekick named "Turd." Mancow debuts on Monday, Oct. 27 in the 9-11:00 a.m. slot. Let us hope that Mancow - and WLS management - will keep "Turd" off the new show. But then, a turd by any other name... ChicagoRadio&TV.com wonders what the hell the geniuses at WLS were thinking, too. They present some of the back story: It was the rumor that wouldn’t die. For over two years, the rumblings within the Chicago broadcast community had been that Mancow Muller would be resurfacing on WLS after being unceremoniously bounced from Q101. The signs all seemed to be pointing to the certainty of such a move. After all, WLS PD Kipper McGee came to WLS from Talk Radio Network, where he helped launch the national syndication of Mancow Muller. At the same time, WLS was facing the prospect of having to replace its heritage morning show of Don Wade & Roma, who have held sway in morning drive for nearly two decades. FULL ARTICLE.... If True, WLS 890 AM Now SUCKS

UPDATE, FEB. 11, 2010: Pink slip for Erich 'Mancow' Muller - Chicago Tribune Now even conservative WLS 890 AM in Chicago is joining in the Dumbing Down of America. In a bizarre move, management of WLS has decided to replace funny, intelligent host Jerry Agar with vulgar, idiot host Mancow Muller. The Chicago Tribune reports today: Erich "Mancow" Muller, who lost his last full-time Chicago radio job 27 months ago, has agreed to host a weekday talk show for Citadel Broadcasting's WLS-AM 890.Mike Fowler, WLS-AM's president and general manager, confirmed that Muller will replace Jerry Agar in the 9-to-11 a.m. slot, beginning Monday. For his first week, he will be paired with Pat Cassidy, who joined WLS from WBBM-AM 780 this summer. Tragic. I guess I'll have to start listening to WIND 560 AM more. Sorry WLS, you've lost a lot of listeners with this stupid move. Agar has been a frequent sit-in for nationally syndicated talk show host Mark Levin. I have a feeling that we haven't heard the last of Jerry Agar. RELATED: The Bench - On the Air at WLS * Agar the Magnificent * Jerry Agar, Regular Guy

Agar the Magnificent

Jerry Agar is a rising star. You may not know him yet, but he's a guy to watch. He follows the popular Don Wade and Roma on WLS-AM 890 here in Chicago (from 9 to 11 a.m.), but that blow torch gets his voice out over most of the Midwest. Agar also does fill-in duty for national talk show hosts, too, such as a recent stint filling in for the nationally syndicated Mark Levin Show. This morning, Agar talked about the ongoing battle to keep the Children's Museum from moving into protected Grant Park. On his own blog, Agar writes that he and his production staff "attempted to get the Chicago Aldermen to state their position on whether or not the Children's Museum should be allowed to relocate to Grant Park." They called each Chicago alderman more than once, and you can see the results at Agar's blog. He urges his listeners and readers to "Call the aldermen yourself, especially those who didn't call us back and give your opinion." IT'S "BURMA," NOT "MYANMAR" Prior to Agar this morning, Don Wade talked about Burma, and why those in the American media insist on calling it "Myanmar." We shouldn't, said Wade, because the name was changed by executive fiat nearly 20 years ago by the military junta, without it being voted on. That's the same group that's denying international aid from coming into Burma to help millions of people suffering from the effects of the recent cyclone that killed over 100,000 people. According to the CIA World Fact Book, "Despite multiparty legislative elections in 1990 that resulted in the main opposition party - the National League for Democracy (NLD) - winning a landslide victory, the ruling junta refused to hand over power." The opposition parties in Burma still call the country "Burma," not "Myanmar," and "Burma" is the accepted colloquial name used by most Burmese people. The name "Myanmar" has been recognized mainly by a few neighboring countries, but mostly by Communist countries such as China and Russia. "Burma" is still the name officially recognized by most Western democracies, because they know that "Myanmar" is a name imposed on the country by a vicious, tyrannical military junta. To call it "Burma" is to symbolically oppose those tyrants. So why do the American media call it "Burma?" My own theory: To sound hip and worldly. Think National Public Radio, for example. How many times have you heard an announcer on NPR pronounce "Mexico" as "May-hee-koh," or "Chile" as "Chee-lay?" Now, how often have you heard an announcer on NPR refer to Germany as "Bundesrepublik Deutschland," or pronounce "France" as "Frahnce?" (And by the way, I'll start pronouncing "Mexico" like a Mexican as soon as everyone in Mexico starts calling us "The United States" and not "Los Estados Unidos.") They try so hard to sound worldly, but media do it selectively. The communist nations call it "Myanmar," so NPR and other media trendyites think it's cool to do so as well. But what these media idiots do not understand is that calling the country "Myanmar" is to give a little bit of legitimacy to the military dictators there - the ones the same media are reporting about now, about the injustices and horrors being inflicted on the Burmese people. So quick to be trendy, so slow to be correct, that's the mainstream media for you. RELATED: WLS 890 AM Chicago
