Who Ald. Moore Really Screamed "F--- You" To

And now, the rest of the ugly story: On June 20, Chicago Alderman Joe Moore (49th Ward) screamed "F--- You!" when he was denied entrance to a VIP reception at an IVI-IPO dinner. Moore didn't have the right ticket, but His Excellency felt he was entitled. He was not, he was denied, he had a fit and he then yelled the obscene insult. But there is more to the story: Who Moore directed that obscenity at, and the rest of what he said. Bob Bartell is the IVI-IPO State Chairman. He is (was?) also a close friend of Moore. Sources tell Chicago News Bench that Bartell was a guest at Joe Moore's secret wedding (June 7, 2008). When Moore was denied entrance to the IVI-IPO's V.I.P. reception on June 20, 2009, he tried to over the gate keeper's head by appealing to Bartell to wave the rules for him. When Bartell upheld the rule, Moore went balistic. "F--- you," Moore hollered, "and your family." The insult was aimed at Bob Bartell personally, not at the room in general. Moore's meaning was clear: "Family" includes more than the spouse. It includes parents, kids, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. Joe Moore told Bob Bartell that he and his entire family should just get f---ed. This is just another reason why Moore will have a hard time finding party support for any bid he might make for re-election in 2011. IVI-IPO Chairman Bob Bartell, who is also well connected with the Northside DFA (Democracy For America), is probably not as charmed by Moore as he used to be. Other reasons include the fact that the Northside DFA itself has not been charmed with Moore for a while; it's difficult to find many people in their ranks who think highly of Moore. The SEIU is not as charmed as they once were, since Moore tried to effectively replace them with a Boys and Girls Club at a public facility in his 49th Ward. Moore has relied heavily on the SEIU for both campaign money and campaign workers. Having been betrayed by Moore, they may not be as willing to pony up as much cash or as many thugs next time around. Also see: Joe Moore Has A Meltdown at IVI-IPO Dinner Sidebar I once told Joe Moore to f--- himself, and I said it to his face at the Morse CTA station on a busy weekday morning in 2008. He was on the sidewalk handing out propaganda. As I walked past him, I said "f--- yourself" just loud enough for him to hear me. I kept walking, intent on catching a train, unaware that Moore had followed me into the dingy station. There, with the smell of urine all around, I suddenly heard Moore yell "What did you say?!?" I turned, saw Moore standing there, his normally pasty face all flushed and red. I stared at him, my eyebrows raised in a silent "Bring it on, Joe." He repeated himself, louder this time. People were watching. "What did you say to me?" he demanded. "I told you to f--- yourself," I said matter-of-factly. About a dozen CTA commuters laughed. Moore's red face became even redder, his chin wobbled horizontally, he stammered something unintelligible, his eyes rolled. I laughed. Moore turned heel and left the station, back to flashing fake smiles at constituents on the sidewalk. I tell you this to only to note that there was something that I did not say to Moore that morning, something that I would never say to him. Although I told Moore to f--- himself, I left his family out of it. None of Moore's spawn or blood relatives have anything to do with his (alleged) corruption or (proven) ineptitude (as far as I know), and they should not be dragged into the argument. (In Moore's case, however, wife Barbara is fair game since she brags that she tells Joe what to do and how to do it, even when she's sober.) Moore, being a yutz with no class, had no reservations about cursing out his dear friend Bob Bartell's entire family. Leave a Comment... Chicago News Bench RSS Feed We're on Twitter...

DFA's Cheney Math Challenge

Matt Blizek, Training Director for Democracy for America, seems to be math challenged. He sent an email blast out to his fellow DFA Deaniacs, in which he demonstrated a startling inability to deal with simple arithmetic. He had trouble with these math problems: - What is 2,000 times 200? - What is 500,000 divided by 5? Matt couldn't figure these out. Matt recalls "sitting in a University of Iowa computer lab and getting an email from Howard Dean issuing the 'Cheney Challenge'." (Clever, that alliteration, eh? Ch-ch-ch-challenge. It's what made the Chia Pet so popular.) Matt reminisced for his DFA readers about "Dick Cheney and his oil buddies," who were having a luncheon fundraiser. Now, here comes the difficult math challenge. According to Matt, Cheney & Company were charging $2,000 per plate to attend. The "challenge," writes Matt, came from Howard Dean, who "had a $5 sandwich online fundraiser and asked, 'could supporters raise more money than Cheney by the time Cheney's luncheon took place?' The luncheon event raised $250K from a couple hundred people while the online campaign pulled in over $500K from nearly ten-thousand donors." Let's review. The Cheney luncheon, Matt wrote, was at $2,000 per plate and, he wrote, "raised $250K from a couple hundred people." A "couple" is two, so "a couple hundred" is 200, and 200 times $2,000 is $400K, not "$250K" as math-challenged Matt wrote. Furthermore, Matt wrote that Dean's "online campaign pulled in over $500K from nearly ten-thousand donors." Hmmm. At $5 per sandwich, that would be 100,000 sandwiches, yet math-challenged Matt wrote that they got "$500K from nearly ten-thousand [sic] donors." Only if they changed the price fo $50 per sandwich, or if donors purchased an average of 10 sandwiches each. Neither seems a likely explanation. One wonders if Matt learned his math skills in a public school. Or, could this be some kind of Revolutionary Math that only a Democrat can understand? Matt goes on to invite you to DFA Night School on Wednesday, August 20th. "Night School is DFA's interactive online training program. Every month Night School brings top campaign experts right to your home at absolutely no cost to you." When a Democrat says they are going to give you something "at absolutely no cost to you," don't believe it. Run like hell. It is especially unbelievable when they can't figure out how many sandwiches they sold for Dr. Dean.

Rogers Park Parody Blogging

Someone is doing a funny parody of Rogers Park bloggers, and yours truly is among the targets. In fact, The Bench seems to be one of the primary targets of this satirical blog. This is fun stuff. I appreciate the attention. Keep it up! We all need a few laughs, and it's a pleasure to laugh at "The Broken Liver" blogspot. A recent post is entitled, "Rogers Park Will Soon Be Rid Of Michael James And His Band Of Smelly Hippies," and demonstrates that the author is an apologist for a repeat liquor law violator. Well, nobody's perfect. As one commenter on the site put it, "you are on top of all the important trivialities of rogers park. and we are so in need of more bloggers here. you are exactly what al gore had in mind when he invented the internets." The commenter, sadly, doesn't know how to depress the "Shift" key on her computer, and seems to think that Al Gore invented not one Internet, but at least two "internets." Well, the commenter, a spunky twelve year old girl in Rogers Park who paints with her fingers, is about the right demographic for The Broken Liver. Nevertheless, it's a weirdly entertaining read. Not as good as The Alderman's Intern was, but okay. Kind of.

Obama: Direct Response Not Allowed

Barack Obama endorsed 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore for re-election last fall. (How many U.S. Senators endorse city councilmen?) Obama recently responded to a letter from Rogers Park resident Margot Hackett (below). In part, Obama wrote, "Although the recent election was close and hard fought, I trust that all in the 49th ward can look forward to effective service by Alderman Joe Moore." He thinks Joe Moore is a swell guy. Obama also has amnesia bouts when it comes to Tony Rezko. Obama wants to be President of the United States. Dear Mr. Obama, My communication to you did say I was disappointed in your choice to endorse Mr. Moore. However the bulk of my communication was to inform you of organizations, such as the Edgewater Rogers Park DFA, who are opposing Don Gordon's right to file this suit and clearly don't support the right for fair and honest elections. As a U.S. Senator, you have no jurisdiction over the state court system. But as a Chicago native and a United States Senator, you could clearly take an active stand in allowing this case to proceed. You could take a stand on everyone's right to a fair and ethical election process You could take a stand on organizations, such as the SEIU and Acorn, that spread very slanderous literature, accusing Don of being a Republican, a racist and a homophobe. You could take a stand on mail fraud, postcards with the return address of an active Rogers Park citizen, from a nonexistent group "Republicans for Gordon", mailed to lower income citizens as a scare tactic. You could take this stand regardless of political ties or endorsements, because it is the right thing to do. As a prominent lawyer, United States Senator and Presidential Candidate, your word carries a great deal of clout. As to Mr. Moore's successes in his ward, I ask you Mr. Obama, when was the last time you took a stroll down Howard Street or Morse Avenue? For that fact have you ever been within the boundaries of the 49th ward outside of Loyola University? Joe Moore grandstands on issues that will get him press, Big Box, CTA reform and the like. But an alderman's first and foremost responsibility is his ward. I invite you sir to a guided tour of our ward any time you like. Sincerely, Margot Hackett Rogers Park, Chicago, IL -------------- Forwarded Message: -------------- From: senator_obama@obama.senate.gov To: dog-tired@comcast.net Subject: Message from Senator Barack Obama Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 20:07:10 +0000 Dear Margot: Thank you for your recent communication expressing your disappointment in my support for Alderman Joe Moore (49th Ward) in the recent City Council elections. Over the years Alderman Moore has made a significant contribution to Chicago City Council and his ward. My support for Joe has been based on his commitment to public service and his hard work on behalf of the residents of the 49th ward. Although the recent election was close and hard fought, I trust that all in the 49th ward can look forward to effective service by Alderman Joe Moore. Some constituents have called for an investigation into the procedures of the local election boards because of the narrow margin in the run-off election. In late April, the challenger, Don Gordon, filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court alleging that he should be declared the winner because of "fraudulent votes" in 22 precincts. As a United States Senator, I have no jurisdiction over the state court system. I do share your view of the importance of election reform. I have introduced S. 453, the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act of 2007, which I am pleased to report has gained significant momentum since the November 2006 mid-term elections. The bill criminalizes deceptive misinformation campaigns and other types of efforts to misinform and intimidate voters. Specifically, S. 453 prohibits anyone from knowingly distributing false information regarding the time, place, manner, qualifications, restrictions and requirements for voting. It also outlaws false statements regarding an individual's endorsement of any candidate running for federal office. This provision is targeted specifically at an incident in Prince Georges County, Maryland, in which the Republican candidates for Governor and U.S. Senator distributed flyers [sic] in predominantly African-American neighborhoods claiming falsely that the two nominees had received the endorsements of several prominent local African-American political figures. The bill imposes stiff penalties of up to $100,000 or five years imprisonment, or both, for those found guilty of violating the law. It also provides voters with a private right of action to seek relief from deceptive practices, and requires the DOJ to conduct immediate investigations into allegations of this type of fraud. Finally, the Act extends its purpose beyond mere deterrents and punishments by establishing a process for reaching out to misinformed and intimidated voters with correct information so they can cast their votes. While the various types of voter suppression targeted in S. 453 would either be prosecuted by attorneys at the Civil Rights or Criminal Divisions of the DOJ, the bill also provides optional authority for the Attorney General to create a "Voter Integrity Task Force." I am pleased to report some significant developments in the effort to get this legislation passed. The House version of the bill, introduced by Rep. Rahm Emanuel (R-IL), was approved by the House Judiciary Committee in mid-April. It is my understanding that the bill will be taken up for debate by the full House, and a vote will be held on final passage, in early June. Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee is planning to hold a hearing on S. 453 on June 7, 2007, which brings us one step closer to passage on the Senate side. I am becoming increasingly optimistic that we can get this bill signed into law by the end of the year. Protecting the right to vote has been a career-long focus of mine. Before joining the Senate, this issue was a central aspect of my work as a community organizer in Chicago, as a civil rights attorney ensuring compliance with voter registration law, and as a constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago. My commitment to protecting the rights of all voters in this country has only been strengthened by the new opportunities for involvement afforded by my position as a United States Senator. I assure you I will take full advantage of that privilege. I am optimistic that progress can be made toward ensuring that in American elections all eligible voters are able to cast their ballots free of any interference or intimidation, and have confidence that their vote will count. That is why I am also supporting legislation that includes requirements for "verifiable paper audit trails," also known as VPAT or "paper trails." Paper trail systems provide voters with a paper receipt of their electronic vote, and that receipt becomes the primary record of that person's vote. The receipt is deposited at the polling sites and is then used in the case of an audit. Thank you again for writing. I value the informed comments of my fellow Illinoisans. Sincerely, Barack Obama United States Senator P.S. Our system does not allow direct response to this email. MUST-READ from Rogers Park Inconsistent

Great posting from Rogers Park Inconsistent, the title of which is, "Does DFA = Dense Foolish Aggitators? Pathetic DFA E-mail throws salt in wounds." Wow, tell us how you really feel, Lafew! This DFA thing is heating up real good, and there is signs of serious infighting at local DFA groups (see related below). RP Inconsistent wrote: Earth to DFA of the [49th] Ward . . . let the court decide! This is a democracy. Moore's antics are all over the internet in living color. He cannot hid behind an electronic fig leaf! He has yet to accept it and neither has "Moore's machine." FULL POSTING... Open Letters to Don Gordon, to DFA members

Yesterday RPB published "An Open Letter to DFA Edgewater/Rogers Park" from DFA member Beata Riedlmayer, a long-time Rogers Park resident and woman of courage. She was responding to an "Open Letter to Don Gordon" from several DFA members. Beata essentially rebuffed them, saying "not in our name" to them. THIS IS A MUST READ for Rogers Park residents. Today Beata wrote to RPB: Could you please follow up with a strong suggestion that anyone who finds the "Open Letter" unacceptable should contact Jim Dean at: http://www.democracyforamerica.com/contact They should hear from as many of us as possible.

An Open Letter to DFA Edgewater/Rogers Park

God Bless Beata Riedlmayer for having the courage to write this letter. She is responding to a shameful "open letter to Don Gordon," sent out by the Edgewater/Rogers ParkDemocracy for America, a local chapter of Democracy For America (DFA). It seems, however, that not all of the DFA agrees with the letter to Gordon. Ms. Riedlmayer sums it up well in her own open letter (below). She has lived in Rogers Park for more than 30 years (she graduated from Senn High) and is a freelance writer. She is a member of three DFA chapters: DFA-Evanston North Shore; Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA; and Democracy for Illinois. An open letter from one voter in the 49th Ward to Shannon Fisk, Jim Ginsburg, Carol Levy, Melissa Lindberg, Michi Schulenberg and Sandra Verthein Edgewater/Rogers Park Democracy for America Steering Committee You need to be aware that not every DFA member agrees with your letter and all of its messages. I have had conversations with more than a dozen people, none of whom is in favor of what you suggest. You do NOT speak for us. Whether you have our names from the Dean days or from MoveOn, the Democratic Party, or from some other source, you have no right to represent us without consent on this issue. DFA stands for "Democracy for America," and I believe that if the democratic process in the 49th Ward runoff was followed in compliance with the laws, you have nothing to fear from an examination of the facts. Many, many of us DO NOT want Mr. Gordon to rescind his suit. We have seen and heard from reliable sources much that bears investigating. Let the legal process do its job and satisfy all of us about the outcome and how it was reached. If Mr. Moore won the election fairly, you have nothing to worry about. I request that you send around another open letter, in which you acknowledge that you have not consulted your membership, but are acting only as a group of individuals who happen to be members of a committee -- and are not speaking for Democrats and Independents in this ward. Video: Todd Stroger Supporter Obama Speaks to DFA

Deaniacs For Anarchy (DFA) - oh, alright, dammit, it's actually Democracy For America - is a big group of, well, Democrats. They march to Howard Dean's orders. They back Big Machine candidates like Joe Moore of Chicago's 49th Ward. And Oback Barama - oh, alright, dammit, it's actually Barack Obama - actually endorsed Joe Moore. Yes, Joe Moore! Barack also endorsed Todd Stroger for Cook Country president, and man, aren't we happy with Todd! Well, "Last month, DFA members called upon the 2008 presidential candidates to take a stand on Iraq," according to the DFA web site. Barackorama gave a pat answer, nothing new, same ol' crap. Wonder if the DFA will ask him to clarify his tough talk on Iran...? Full Posting at DFA...
