McKenna Slammed in Party Ethics Investigation

by Warner Todd Huston Early this month Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady revealed that the state party decided to officially reprimand former GOP Chairman Andy McKenna for misuse of party funds and ethics violations. Despite his ethics violations as chairman, McKenna went ahead and launched his bid to become our next Illinois Governor anyway. Should McKenna win office we'll have gone from one ethically ignorant Governor (George Ryan), to a second (Rod Blagojevich) to a third (McKenna). Illinois is already a laughing stock of corruption, why vote for McKenna and make it worse? Anyway, today the State Journal-Register in Springfield (the State Capitol) released some more information about Andy McKenna's ethics violations and the party's reaction to it.
“The Chairman’s office never informed the Illinois Republican State Central Committee of intent to commission this poll, nor did Andrew McKenna ever request approval to conduct this poll from the … Committee,” the report by the ethics committee of the state party said of the poll, which was done by The Tarrance Group at a cost of $28,300. “At no point before, during or after this poll was taken did the ... Committee receive disclosure from Andrew McKenna pursuant to provisions of the … Committee’s Code of Ethics concerning potential personal benefit, appearance of potential personal benefit or appearance of impropriety.”
How can any Republican support Andy McKenna? With the regrettable political climate that the Democrats have foisted on us here in Illinois why continue that mess under a Republican administration as McKenna will surely do? With this 2010 election we have a chance for real, substantive change in Illinois. Let's not throw it all away by voting for your Judy Baar Topinkas, Jim Ryans and Andy McKennas. Let's not stay with the good old boy network that destroyed the Illinois GOP, shall we? Essay: Andy McKenna, Pay Up or Give Up

Andy McKenna, candidate for Illinois governor, hopes I'll give myself to him for free. I'm not that kind of boy, though, and I charge for what the Andy McKennas of the world want from me. So today, I told McKenna to pay up or give up. As politicians of all stripes gear up for the 2010 elections, many of them are already spending big money on campaign advertising. They are also cluttering up the inboxes of many a blogger with press/media releases. The Old Media have always gotten press releases, and in fact they welcome them because many are well written and provide free text with which to fill, for example, a newspaper. For TV and radio, press releases provide filler too, allowing a station to keep their talking heads talking for the full length of a news show without asking their own writers to actually, you know, write. I confess that I sometimes publish a press release, in full even, if it is well written and informative. I always make it obvious that it is a press release, unlike some who unscrupulously make it look as if they wrote "that brilliant story." I will publish a press release if I think it provides interesting or useful information to my readers in a well written manner, regardless of whether it's commercial or nonprofit. I'm especially partial to small businesses, whether they are for-profit or non-profit. It can give me a good post quickly and effortlessly. Ah, but political ads are different. Those guys are throwing obscene amounts of dough around and never ask for anything tangible in return, except - ultimately - votes, then bribes, then kickbacks. Now, I try to sell advertising on this blog, same as a newspaper or broadcaster. I'm a lot cheaper, of course, because I only have hundreds of thousand of readers, not the dozens that the bankrupt Chicago Tribune must have. Many bloggers are trying to sell advertising. Andy McKenna is one of many people running for a number of different offices for the 2010 Illinois elections. McKenna, like other politicians, sends a number of press releases to me every week, hoping that I will either publish them in full or re-work them; either way, it is hoped that I'll help get their message "out there." Look, even though I would never vote for a faux-Republican RINO like Andy McKenna, I would shout his message from my blog, you betcha, if it's in the form of a paid advertisement. Perhaps that makes me a mercenary of sorts; I don't look at it that way. I'm simply willing to publish an ad, even one that might not necessarily represent the views held here. I reserve the right to refuse certain ads, of course. I would refuse any ad from hateful organizations such as the KKK or the Democrat National Committee. However, if any Democrat wanted to pay me to place a campaign ad on this blog, for example, I'd accept it, with the understanding that it would not prevent me from continuing to call them out as greedy, corrupt, amoral, opportunistic, pseudo-collectivist lice. Same goes for RINOs (Republican In Name Only). I would, however, give them honest service and what they pay for and in a timely fashion and with a forced half-smile. That's better than what they give the voters, who end up paying their salaries. So, really, they're getting one helluva a bargain by advertising here. After all, they buy ads with Big Media, many of which are critical of them. Fair is fair, even in Illinois. By the way, I'm willing to take a check or PayPal deposit from a RINO. Democrats: I'll want cash in advance or we don't talk. Oh yes, Andy McKenna... I wrote back to the nameless McKenna flunky/ies that send/s email press releases to me and let him/her/them know that if he/she/they think I'm giving it away, he/she/they are wrong. To: press@mckennagov.com Dear McKenna for Illinois: Thanks for all the press releases. I see that your campaign is spending plenty of money for radio, television and print advertising. This blog, Chicago News Bench, accepts advertising just as they do. I would gladly run any message you wish on this blog, as long as it is in the form of paid advertisement. You can easily place an ad on Chicago News Bench by going to Blog Ads at this link. You'll find our rates to be very reasonable. We look forward to serving your advertising and publicity needs. UPDATED: GOP Rolls Over, Plays Dead in 5th Cong Dist

UPDATE, SPECIAL NOTE, 11 April 2009: Although America's Independent Party (AIP) is linking to my post below, originally published on March 11, 2009. I want to make it clear that AIP's National Chair, Tom Hoefling, was badly mismanaging Pulido's congressional campaign after her March 3 primary win in the IL 5th Cong District. Hoefling alienated Pulido's supporters and ran a campaign that was not savvy to the workings of the Internet. In short, an already poorly run campaign was made worse by the ineffective, unresponsive "management" under Hoefling. For AIP to cite the post below is a purposefully deceitful act on their part, for they are well aware of my subsequent criticism of Hoefling, AIP and of my public un-endorsement of Pulido. Shame on AIP. Shame on Tom Hoefling. Shame on Alan Keyes. ALSO SEE: About Rosanna Pulido's Trouble Campaign Special Pulido Bulletin From John Curry Pulido Gets Another Un-Endorsement Open Letter to Rosanna Pulido Q&A About Rosanna Pulido's Campaign ORIGINAL POST, 11 March 2009: Shame on Andy McKenna, Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party. Shame on the entire party, which seems hellbent on continuing its dismal record of losing elections. Although the Illinois GOP has won more "games" than the Chicago Cubs have over the past 100 years, at least the Cubs can honestly say they've been trying. The Illinois Republican Party seems content to roll over and play dead. Rosanna Pulido won the Republican special primary election in the Illinois 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, March 3. The election is being held to fill the seat vacated by Rahm Emanuel. You might not know this, however, from looking at the Illinois Republican Party's website (http://www.weareillinois.org/), where there are only two brief mentions of Rosanna Pulido. Pulido will face Democrat candidate Mike Quigley and Green Party candidate Mathew Reichel on April 7. We're not talking about a minor elected office. We're talking about a seat in the US Congress. Although it is unlikely that Pulido can defeat better funded Quigley, the GOP should at least be touting their candidate in the 5th. Barely a mention on their website. The GOP is making a lot of noise in support of a special election to replace Roland Burris, who was appointed by Gov. Blagojevich to fill the congressional seat vacated by Barack Obama. Yet the GOP is all but completely ignoring an ongoing special election in the 5th Congressional District. That's hypocritical and cowardly. It takes no courage to scream for a special election that will most likely not happen. It is cowardly to not support your own candidate in special election that is actually taking place. The Republican National Committee (RNC) is equally guilty of ignoring the 5th Congressional District election. GOP Chairman McKenna has a Facebook page. Did McKenna congratulate Pulido on Facebook? Did he even mention her? Nope. One person did post this to McKenna's Facebook page: I know a lot of people may feel that the 5th District is a lost cause, but they shouldn't. There is a strong GOP candidate here. Rosanna Pulido needs all of our help. I know it's not election season, but that is more reason for people like us to step up and show the Democrats that not only do we exist, but we can be contentious. All around ... Read More voter turnout for the April 7th special election will most likely be low. Democrats expect that and they expect that the "silent" Republicans that reside in the district will not turn out. We CAN mobilize ourselves! We should be doing our part to turn up at the polls. This is something that is bigger than our district and our state. One more seat in Congress is one more step towards preventing the socialization of our country. If you live in the 5th you need to make the effort to mobilize yourself and others like you to vote! This election is not something that is lost for us. It is something we have gained! Why no such words of support for Pulido from McKenna and the Illinois GOP? Why are McKenna and the GOP "leaders" not thinking like the guy who wrote on McKenna's Facebook page? Not a word from either the RNC or Andy McKenna. Nada, zilch. There will be more about this next week. Much more. IL GOP Chair on New RNC Chair

Andy McKenna is the Illinois GOP Chairman. His comments about Michael Steele's election as the new chair of the Republican National Committee: ILGOP Chairman Statement on Steele election to RNC ChairmanshipShare Today at 3:13pm "Today, Republicans sent a message to Americans that our party is ready for a new generation of leaders focused on the future. Michael Steele will lead a Republican Party that reaches out to every citizen, regardless of political persuasion, in every city, county and town in America. ”In Illinois, Republicans share that message because Blagojevich Democrats have embarrassed our state and the people of Illinois are hungry for change. ”The same message of lower taxes, less government, higher ethical standards and reform we are talking about in Illinois are the principles embodied by Michael Steele and embraced by the overwhelming majority of our country. ”Pat Brady and I are proud to be a part of the leadership team involved in Michael Steele's historic election as are the thousands of grassroots supporters in Illinois who are eager for Chairman Steele's first visit to our state.” ---Andy McKenna ILGOP Chairman CNB RSS Feed

Burris: Just Anotha Playa

Roland Burris was sworn in today as Illinois' junior U.S. Senator. Score one for Blago, score another for pay-to-play. Burris is no innocent when it comes to tit for tat. To wit (emphasis added): Burris and his companies have donated over $20,000 to Governor Blagojevich, his lobbying clients have donated over $100,000, and Burris himself endorse Blagojevich for re-election in 2006, saying, “I think he’s doing a helluva job”. Just recently on NBC’s “Today Show”, Burris refused to call on Governor Blagojevich to resign. So writes Andy McKenna today at We Are Illinois. McKenna, chairman of the Illinois GOP, continued: Burris has been amply repaid for his loyalty. His consulting firm received almost $300,000 in state contracts under Blagojevich, his lobbying clients received over $3 million in state contracts, his nephew was hired for a cushy state job, and finally, Burris received a Senate seat that he could never have won in an election. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Subscribe to Chicago News Bench

Blagojevich Wife: Scrutiny and More Scrutiny

Rod Blagojevich. So nice they've impeached him twice, and Democrat leaders all around Illinois still insist that they didn't know who he was until his federal arrest on December 9, 2008. Apparently, none of them read the papers, as IL GOP Chairman Andy McKenna points out today.
The Illinois Democratic leadership cannot plausibly plead innocent when it comes to knowing that Blago was up to no good. Take Mike Madigan, for example, who was just today elected to his 13th term as Speaker of the Illinois House.

Madigan, for God's sake! He co-chaired Blago's re-election campaign in 2006! And he claims that he and other top Dems “didn’t know the intensity of the federal inquiry.” Incredible, and now Madigan will preside over the legislative body that will conduct the trial to remove Blago from office. You gotta love Illinois politics.

Blago's wife Patti has also been under public scrutiny, and for a long time - it's a family affair, as demonstrated by this August, 2008 flashback from Chicagoist (emphasis added):
Patti Blagojevich Accepts New Job Rod Blagojevich's wife (and Dick Mell's daughter), Patti, accepted a job with the Chicago Christian Industrial League. The non-profit homeless organization announced....that she would become their new development director next month, after Labor Day. "Patti's commitment to Chicago and her knowledge of the development community will help highlight our services," the group’s executive director, and former Daley staffer Judy McIntyre, said in a statement. The group, which was forced to cut staff last year due to a dwindling budget, has received about $350,000 a year from the Illinois Department of Human Services. Illinois' First Lady, a licensed real estate agent, has been under federal scrutiny recently for real estate deals involving people with state contracts. Mrs. Blagojevich denied she's leaving real estate due to the scrutiny.
Flash back even further, to a May 20, 2005 Chicago Tribune article:
First lady of Illinois linked to developer A controversial fundraiser and adviser to Gov. Rod Blagojevich has had a business relationship with First Lady Patti Blagojevich for eight years, the governor's office acknowledged Thursday. Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a Chicago developer who has been influential in shaping Blagojevich's administration and policies, has "worked on various projects" with Patti Blagojevich since 1997, said Cheryle Jackson, the governor's spokeswoman. The disclosure marks the first time that the governor's administration has acknowledged the governor's family has a personal financial link with a key adviser who helped shape the administration and is now tied to a variety of controversies involving allegations of cronyism.
Democrat leaders claim they didn't realize how intense the federal investigation of Blagojevich was. Were they not reading the same newspapers that the resut of us have been for the past several years? When Illinois Democrats like Mike Madigan, Roland Burris or Heather Steans try to play dumb when it comes to the stink around the Blagojevich Family, such roll your eyes and hold your nose. The whole lot of them stinks.

Mike Madigan, Blago Enabler

Illinois GOP Chairman Andy McKenna (left) asks a question to which many of us would like an answer:

As Mike Madigan prepares today to impeach for a second time the man whose re-election campaign he co-chaired in 2006, the people of Illinois have two questions: why didn’t you do this sooner? And why did you co-chair his re-election campaign?

McKenna goes on, hitting the jugular:

Madigan recently tried to explain his crucial part in reelecting Rod Blagojevich in 2006 by saying “we didn’t know the intensity of the federal inquiry.” (Chicago Tribune, House panel unanimously approves report accusing Gov. Rod Blagojevich of wide range of offenses, January 9, 2008).We don’t know how Speaker Madigan could not have known the “intensity of the federal inquiry”. Below is only a small sampling of press reports of the federal investigations surrounding the Governor’s office. They all appeared before Blagojevich’s re-election in 2006. "Friends of Blago" Group Push For Special Election

Andy McKenna is a busy guy, even in normal times. With the Blagojevich scandal still fresh and still developing, he's especially busy. As Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, McKenna is suddenly adjusting his schedule to respond to widespread corruption charges of Democrat governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich. McKenna has formed a new online group called "Friends of Blago" (www.friendsofblago.com), which features a petition that urges asks Illinois lawmakers to authorize a special election to fill the US Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama. McKenna says it would be better to allow the people to decide who should fill that seat rather than allow "Blagojevich Democrats" to make the decision. "How can Blagojevich Democrats appoint the nest U.S. Senator," the web site asks, "when they are part of the problem?" McKenna, through the web site, says that the Democrat-dominated political system that empowered Blagojevich, who has been charged with trying to "sell" the Senate seat, should not be allowed to name another of their own to fill it. The site also says, "Governor Rod Blagojevich has put a 'For Sale' sign on the Illinois state capitol for years. Now he has put a 'For Sale' sign on the important job of filling the seat currently held by President-Elect Barack Obama." Republicans are not the only ones calling for a special election. Democrats like Barack Obama and US Senator Dick Durbin favor a special election, too. For that matter, even Blagojevich is toying with the idea of a special election; since he can no longer sell the seat, he's got nothing to lose by giving it back to the people. The Sun-Times has an editorial today that also calls for a special election: "It is time to go beyond partisan politics," says the editorial, "to let the voters select who they believe can best represent Illinois in the Senate -- with diligence, competency and, above all, honesty. A special election will be costly, but it is absolutely necessary now to lift the confidence of voters in their government." According to Rasmussen Reports, most Illinoisans favor a special election: Sixty-six percent (66%) of all Illinois voters say the state should hold a special election to fill Obama’s Senate seat rather than let Governor Rod Blagojevich or his successor appoint a replacement. Twenty-one percent (21%) disagree, and 13% are undecided," says the December 11 report. (Source) Friends of Blago urges people to sign their petition for a special election "giving the power back to the people" and "We can't let more Blagojevich Democrats make this decision for the people of Illinois. Join the fight - Bring change to Illinois."
