Photo du Jour - Bittersweet Departures

The trees bade farewell
to the snows of March...
They cried as thirst-quenching snow,
frozen water after all,
said a last goodbye
Hugs were exchanged
Tears were shed
They clung like lovers
being torn apart by
the wind of fate
Reluctant to let go,
unable to resist
"Come with me snow or you
both shall die!" cried the wind

The snow gave
itself up,
the ultimate
sacrifice
Goodbye snow,
you gave
us life

Photo du Jour 16 March 2009, Sucka

The likeness of Mister T peers out of a window made to look smashed out, in a building in downtown Chicago. I took this photo on March 14, 2009 from the Sky-Line Club at 307 N. Michigan Avenue.

The Carbide and Carbon Building, 230 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago. I took this photo on May 23, 2008. This is one of my favorite buildings in Chicago. Dark green in color (often mistaken for black), with genuine gold leafing. Construction completed in 1929, it stands just south of the Chicago River, a stone's throw south of the Chicago Tribune Tower. Read more about the building at ChicagoArchitecture.info. A pigeon enjoys a free CTA train ride on Christmas Day, 2006. (The humans on board had to pay full fare.)
After this photo was taken, another passenger and I shooed the bird off the train when the doors opened at the next station. Chicago News Bench RSS Feed Cool Stuff...

N. Clark Street, Rogers Park on Chicago's northeast side. (Click images to enlarge) The stretch of Clark from W. Devon north to W. Howard is heavily Latino, and there are a number of restaurants along those blocks worth trying. The street has no shortage of laundromats, legal help offices, taquerias, liquor stores, interesting discount shops and a surprising number of fair to excellent Asian restaurants. It's a photographer's dream. Every block holds some kind of visual reward. Colorful here, drab there, shiny and new to broken and abandoned, N. Clark Street is a street you should visit. Alderman Joe Moore reaches out to a voter - as the voter sits in a polling booth - during the April 2007 aldermanic run-off election in the 49th Ward. This is a clear violation of election law. At 10:30 this morning (March 10), Moore and two other aldermen will stage a cheap media stunt at City Hall, 2nd Floor. Moore, Toni Preckwinkle and Ricardo Munoz will pretend to want more honesty in government. Their March 9 press release says: "The ongoing parade of political scandals at the federal state and local level have increased the deep public cynicism about the honesty and integrity of those elected to public service. Adding to this cynicism at the local level is the legal provision that exempts City Council members and their staffs from the investigatory oversight of the City of Chicago Inspector General. Alderman Moore and his colleagues will present a proposed ordinance that removes the exemption and provides additional measures to strengthen the Inspector General’s independence." You mean like illegally talking to a voter while she's voting? Or like leaning on developers for campaign donations? That kind of stuff? Photo du Jour, 02-26-09 Black Squirrel

Are they an invasive species? A mutation of the grays? Imported from Canada? According to Chicago Wilderness Magazine, "In the Midwest, as far as has been determined, all of the black squirrels are actually morphs of the gray squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis." For more about black squirrels, see "Rogers Park: Home to Black Squirrels." Chicago News Bench Merchandise Chicago News Bench RSS Feed

We're starting a new feature. With the unoriginal name "Photo du Jour," we'll slap a picture up for your visual entertainment. Today's photo du jour was taken at Loyola Beach on Chicago's north side, Sept. 7, 2008. I got lucky with those clouds over the tree. (Click to enlarge) CNB RSS Feed
