5k-15k "Hot Chocolate" Run, Chicago Lakefront, Nov. 1
Where can you do a charity 5k or 15k run, then enjoy your share of 900 gallons of
Hershey's hot chocolate, 200,000 pieces of assorsted Hershey's candy, and 300 gallons of warm chocolate fondue?
At Montrose Harbor, on Chicago's north side, that's where. The Illinois Bone & Joint Institute presents the "Hot Chocolate 15k/5k" on Sunday, November 1 starting at 8:00 a.m. for 5k runners and approximately 8:30 a.m. for 15k runners. All runners are asked to line up at 7:30 a.m. and listen for announcements. Both the 5k and 15k runs start and finish at Montrose Harbor, a beautiful park of Lincoln Park, right on the shoreline of Lake Michigan. (download a PDF race area map). The weather is expected to be very much like today's - perfect for a jog through the park.
Chicago News Bench took these photos of the race site being prepared on October 31.

Fall Colors Come Early to Chicago (slideshow)
About a week ago, I noticed that a number of trees along Chicago's Lake Michigan shoreline are turning to their fall colors early. While it seems that less than one in 30 have undergone this seasonal metamorphasis, those that have are all the more stunning for standing out against the crowd. Despite Al Gore's delusional nightmares, we've have a cool summer in 2009, with night temperatures in 40's. This has caused some of the trees of Lincoln Park, which runs for miles along the shoreline, to dramatically go from green to reds and oranges, skipping the yellow phase. Here are some photos, below, that I took on Sept. 15. (You can also go directly to my online photo album to see larger versions of these images.)
Photo du Jour - Bittersweet Departures
The trees bade farewell
to the snows of March...
frozen water after all,
said a last goodbye
Hugs were exchanged
Tears were shed
They clung like lovers
being torn apart by
the wind of fate
Reluctant to let go,
unable to resist
"Come with me snow or you
both shall die!" cried the wind
The snow gave
itself up,
the ultimate
sacrifice
Goodbye snow,
you gave
us life
