New Rock Song Celebrates Andrew Breitbart

Oct. 13, 2012 - We all miss the late, great Andrew Breitbart. A couple of our buds over at iOwnTheWorld.com (IOTW) are responsible for a new song about Breitbart.

The song is "Breitbart Is Here," and it's a nice rock tribute to Breitbart. The song was created, produced and recorded by "Irony Curtain" (his nom de blog). IC was spurred to action by "Big Fur Hat" (another pseudonym; they hate real at IOTW). iOwnTheWorld is a very popular website of conservative commentary, incredibly brilliant visuals and some of the most wicked snark and satire on the Internet.

"Big Fur Hat asked me to write a tribute to Andrew Breitbart," wrote IC on his website. "The inspiration was a memorial gathering we attended for him in a little out-of-the-way bar in New York City."

You can hear and download "Breitbart Is Here" for free (no catch, no strings attached, no weirdness here). For the love of Andrew Breitbart, tell all of your friends about it.

R.I.P., Scott McKenzie. Thanks For The Music.

August 20, 2012 - Singer Scott McKenzie died on August 18 in Los Angeles. He had been hospitalized for an illness for two weeks before passing away at home. McKenzie is best known for his huge worldwide hit tune, "San Francisco," in 1967.

"San Francisco" (videos and lyrics below) is one of the most beautiful ballads ever. Well, that's my opinion. Yes, it's a "hippy song," and I'm a conservative, but who can really object to wearing flowers in one's hair and celebrating love? Not me.

A statement on a website maintained by friends of McKenzie said this today: "In retirement Scott lived in LA and became a big fan of Facebook where he had many friends in his "Asylum". Scott was in and out of hospital since 2010 after falling ill with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease affecting the nervous system. It is thought he may have had a heart attack in early August, 2012. Staff did not want him to leave the hospital, but he wanted to be at home and passed away on 18th August 2012."

It was the innocence of the moment, in that "Summer of Love" in 1967, that I still hold dear. "San Francisco" captured it perfectly.

For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

Sure, the hippy peace movement metastasized into something unpleasant, but at that moment, in 1967, when I was 12 years old, it was still bright and shiny and warm. It seemed to hold such promise. Today, I shed a few tears for Scott and his beautiful spirit. May God take Scott McKenzie into Heaven.
If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

For those who come to San Francisco

Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

All across the nation such a strange vibration

People in motion
There's a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion, people in motion

For those who come to San Francisco

Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

If you come to San Francisco

Summertime will be a love-in there

Tony Bennett Blames War On Drugs For Whitney Houston's Death

Houston  (L) and Bennett (R)  (AP photos; via salon.com)
February 14, 2012 - Non-genius Tony Bennett, 85, is a great singer and, from all accounts, a nice guy. Trouble is, he's also a dim bulb, and says that the War on Drugs is to blame for the death of Whitney Houston.

Bennett said that while on stage at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy gala on Saturday, February 11.

He took the opportunity to politicize Houston's death. "Let's legalize drugs like they did in Amsterdam," he told the audience, "No one's hiding or sneaking around corners to get it. They go to a doctor to get it."

There is so much that's wrong with that statement, and with the rest of what he said, that it has gotten a lot of criticism, even from those likely to be supportive of the octogenarian crooner. The Hollywood Reporter noted the weirdness:
Bennett's statements come months after Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for his involvement in prescribing and administering a fatal dose of the drug propofol. Winehouse, who had battled addiction for many years, died in July of alcohol poisoning. While the cause of Houston's death is not yet known, the singer was said to have fought addiction in recent years.
From Salon.com, Mary Elizabeth Williams wrote this example of Bennett's dimness:
Just hours after the news of the singer’s death, Bennett was at a Grammys event in the Beverly Hills Hilton – where Houston died just a few floors above – and said, “First it was Michael Jackson, then there was Amy Winehouse, and now the magnificent Whitney Houston. I’d like to have every gentleman and lady in this room commit themselves to get on government to legalize drugs … Let’s legalize drugs like they did in Amsterdam. No one’s hiding or sneaking around corners to get it. They go to a doctor to get it.”
Let's try to understand Bennett's muddled thinking: People should "go to a doctor" to get their drugs, he said, in the same breath in which he cites drug overdose victim Michael Jackson. Uhm, didn't Michael Jackson get his drugs from his doctor? Why yes! He did! Somebody tell Tony Bennett about that, okay?

Let's assume that the poison that Whitney Houston was using had been legal, as Tony Bennett says it should have been. Would that have prevented her from overdosing and/or using it so excessively that it contributed to her death? Did the War on Alcohol contribute to any booze related deaths last year? What? There is no War on Alcohol? Well, see? That's my point. Legalization does not prevent abuse. Ask any alcoholic.

Indeed, Salon.com kinda sorta thinks along these lines as well. Williams wrote:
Yet what really muddles the waters is the examples Bennett used, of Michael Jackson and his friend Amy Winehouse. The claim that “Once it’s legal and everybody can do it” problems go away is sadly untrue. Michael Jackson didn’t meet his maker shooting heroin into his veins; he died of “Acute Propofol Intoxication” — and his doctor, Conrad Murray, was subsequently convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Other drugs found in Jackson’s system at the time of his death were the FDA-approved Lorazepam, Lidocaine, Diazepam and Midazolam. Winehouse, meanwhile, died of alcohol poisoning.
See? That's my point. For Tony Bennett to say that the absence of a War on Drugs would have saved Whitney Houston is so profoundly naive that it makes him sound like a serious Libertarian. Bennett should, as they say, just shut up and sing. The sooner he shuts up the better, too...

In September, 2011 Bennett caused a firestorm of resentment when he told Howard Stern that America was to blame for the 9/11 terror attacks. “They flew the plane in, but we caused it,” he said on Stern's live broadcast. Bennett soon issued an apology, but the damage was already done to his credibility with a lot of people. The more recent statement about Whitney Houston being a victim of the War on Drugs does not exactly help his public relations efforts.

Better Than Whitney, Hands Down (Updated)

Donna Summer
Listen to this amazing performance of MacArthur Park and try to imagine Whitney Houston attempting it (I can't.) Donna Summer nailed it - time and time again. Sadly, she has not been taken as seriously as she should be, not by many in the United States anyway. Donna Summer has a powerful, magnificent voice even today when she's in her early 60s.

Update, May 18, 2012: Donna Summer died at the age of 63 on May 17, 2012. Please see "Dance Clubs in Heaven Are Playing Donna Summer Songs."

Some of her songs are silly love songs, as are many great artists' songs, but always sung with vocal perfection. Some of Summer's songs, however, did have gravitas, and plenty of it.

Perhaps the best example of that is her rendition of "MacArthrur Park," which is not an easy number to sing.

Why hasn't Donna Summer been given the same respect by the public as Whitney Houston? I don't know for sure, but my hunch is that Donna was dismissed by many because she was an icon of disco in its early days, when it was too convenient to mock. Donna laughed all the way to bank, of course.

Had timing of Donna Summer's singing career coincided more closely that of Whitney Houston's, I believe that Donna would have been considered the better vocalist by the general public.

The public be damned, however, Summers is highly respected by her peers in the music industry. In fact, she is a 2012 nominee for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

If her knock-out performances of MacArthur Park don't convince you, listen to Donna Summer sing "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" live with only a piano behind her, and no studio trickery.

Does Dan Proft NOT Know Our National Anthem's Lyrics?

September 1, 2010 - Everybody at the big fundraiser for Joel Pollak today sang the national anthem, even the wait staff.

Dan Proft, 2010
Well, almost everybody. Dan Proft, a well-known politician, didn't seem to know any of the lyrics. Shame on him, on the eve of the 196th anniversary of the writing of the "The Star-Spangled Banner." Francis Scott Key began writing in on the night of Sept. 13, 1814 and finished it the next day.

There were 400 people there who paid good money to hear Joel Pollak talk about his campaign against Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (9th District, IL), as well as to hear the dynamic Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). Ryan recently endorsed Pollak in his bid for Congress.

Prior to Pollak and Ryan being introduced, a great welcome speech was given by Leah Reicin, Hadassah National Board member and Youth Aliyah Chair. Reicin was a plenary speaker at the 2nd Annual United Nations Youth Assembly recently. While she was speaking, some of the protesters who were outside decided to come inside and crash the fundraiser (more on that here). She was aware of the momentary scuffle but didn't miss a beat and carried to introduce soprano Magaly Cordero (photo, right), who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner," our national anthem.

We all know that song. It's the one they sing before somebody yells "play ball!" at a ballgame. It's that song that many of us have trouble learning, but all of us know by time we've had our first beer at the ball park. Sure, most of us only know the first verse (there are four verses), but by golly we sing it as best we can and with chests swelling with pride.

Not Dan Proft, not today, not at the Pollak luncheon, not at Table 39.

Why, then, did Dan Proft not sing one single lyric of our national anthem? Sure, he put his hand over his heart as is the respectful custom. But as 400 people around him, including everyone at Table 39, sang every word of the anthem, Proft's lips did - not - move. Not once.

It was weird. Proft is a guy who paints himself as Mister Conservative and Holier-Than-Thou, and to listen to him give a speech you'd think he was some kind of super patriot. Why, then, did he not sing along with everyone else? Did he never learn the song? Did he forget the words? He has an acceptable, if tinny, speaking voice, but perhaps he's embarrassed that he cannot carry a tune. That's just a theory, of course; I've never heard Dan Proft attempt to sing.

No, wait just a cotton pickin' minute... There was that weird song and dance act he did back before the February 2010 primaries in Illinois. (What was that about? I forget.) Anyway, as a service to Dan Proft, here is the karaoke version of The Star-Spangled Banner. I suggest that he download it to his iPhone and carry it with him to the next ballgame.

Megan Fox Debuts Her Gun Rights Song at Tea Party

In the video below, Megan Fox sings what may be the best song about gun rights that I've ever heard. She wrote "Mama's Got A Smith & Wesson" just a few days before she debuted it at the Homer-Lockport Tea Party rally on April 6, 2010.  Megan is a mom, a patriot, talented songwriter and has a blog called Intolerant Fox. Let's hope we hear more from her. (For more information about conceal and carry, visit the Illinois Carry web site.)

Rocking with Musicians for Freedom, Sharlene Holt

This is one of the most amazing web sites - and persons - I've run across: "Musicians for Freedom" by Sharlene Holt, a very talented singer-songwriter, who is obviously very much into politics. She brings her apparent conservatism to the show, but Liberals should not be put off by this: Her music and strong voice are astounding, ranging from alternative rock to great love ballads to... more. You can hear full-length samples of her songs on the "Featured Music" page of the site, and even download them free as mp3 files. Holt is well networked, too, and features great videos and music from other artists. Regardless of your politics, you would be cheating yourself if you don't explore Musicians for Freedom at www.musiciansforfreedom.com. Singing in the Subway

Oy, I'm up to here with politics. Let's take a break. Here are three guys who are sure to bring a smile your way, with their nice harmonies and classic oldies sound. They sing in Chicago's Red Line Jackson CTA subway station in the "Loop." They call themselves "3.com." I recorded them on January 29. I hope you're able to catch their act in the subway soon.
