Google Gives Us Clean Bill of Health: No Malware!

Sept. 25, 2012 - The four-day long national nightmare is over. Chicago News Bench is back, given a clean bill of health by Google this afternoon.  Google's Webmaster Tools informed us today that "Google has not detected any malware on this site" and also that "latest badware review" for Chicago News Bench "has finished. The site was found clean. The badware warnings from web search are being removed. Please note that it can take some time for this change to propagate."

It was painful. We first became aware of the malware last Friday morning, and fixing the problem required the deletion of a bunch of old posts. Fortunately, those posts were very old and nobody had visited them in a long, long time anyway - so that was no big loss. A fresh template was installed  yesterday just to be doubly certain. We then requested another review from Google and the good news came this afternoon.

It's a long story, but suffice it to say that Chicago News Bench and hundreds of other websites were hit hard by malware last Friday morning.

The malicious software came to bloggers via Izea Social Media Marketing Company, which unwittingly served it through an ad widget. I love Izea. I've been dealing with them for over three years and they are honest, helpful and pay their ad publishers well. Izea was a victim in all of this, too, and the "badware" that came through Izea originated from something called "admaxstat.com," which was pumping evil code through the servers of a Chicago dedicated server host called SingleHop. (See Google's own statements about malware from Admaxstat and malware from Singlehop.)

For some background about this, check out two items at Izea's own blog: Taking Out Malware Warnings (Sept. 21) and Izea Media Update (Sept. 24).

More later. In the meantime, we're glad to be back.
(Liberals: You can stop laughing now, bwaaaah-hahahahahahaha!)

Affiliate Marketers Under Assault

Affiliate marketers have come under assault recently. It's getting rough out there, as though the weak economy wasn't bad enough. Recently, Google has killed the search engine rankings for tens of thousands of affiliate marketers with its ("Google Farmer" or "Google Panda" algorithms).

Many of you are also bitterly aware of the recent debacle in Illinois, where Governor Pat Quinn and his fellow Democrats decided that taxing Amazon.com affiliates would be a good idea. It destroyed the livelihoods of hundreds of Illinois residents.

A report in March at Chicagoist.com summed up the anti-affiliate online tax legislation in Illinois: Online retailer Amazon barely waited for the ink to dry on Gov. Quinn's signing of HB 3659 into law by dropping its Illinois-based affiliates. HB 3659 requires all online retailers with a business presence in Illinois, like Amazon's affiliate program, to collect state sales tax on online purchases. In a statement to its Illinois affiliate owners, Amazon said, “We had opposed this new tax law because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive. We deeply regret that its enactment forces this action.” Full article...

Updated: Blogger Is Back, But Posts Are Gone, Widgets Displaced

UPDATED: May 13, 2011 - Google's "Blogger" blog site is was down for an incredibly long time. It went out of service for bloggers late on Wednesday night and I am only now able to log in to post this. The outage was spotty, however: I was able to post three items yesterday but now I see that they are missing. Thanks a lot, Blogger. My layout was effed up, too, which I just scrambled to fix. Update, 7:00 pm CDT: Yesterday I posted three items, all of which disappeared. Two have now reappeared after Blogger did its under-the-hood fixes, but one is still lost in the ether.

Climategate on Twitter, Google and Democratic Underground

If you've been living under a rock for the past week, you might not have heard about the hacked emails that prove the hoax of global warming. Or, perhaps, you've tried to find info about it at Democratic Underground. Well, you need to catch up with that story now, and Democratic Underground is busy censoring comments about Climategate. Fortunately, Twitter and Google are not self-censoring. Twitter: search for #climategate and #copenhagen (include the hashmark.) Google: search for "climategate" (do Web, News and Blog searches) Don't expect to find many references to "climategate" over at Democratic Underground. They're busy purging any posts about the scandal. This one, for example, posted by "hopfen": Democratic Underground - Inhofe says he will call for ... 1 post - Last post: yesterdayInhofe says he will call for investigation on "climategate."www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az... Clicking that link on their site gets the following error message: Missing Topic If you have any questions, please contact the site administrator. Click here to go back to previous page. One of the biggest hoaxes in history has been exposed and it's a "missing topic" at Democratic Underground? Perhaps the "Underground" part of their name refers to their collective heads, which are apparently firmly shoved into the ground ostrich style. Fortunately, we found the cached version of that purged posting. We happily reproduce it here (emphasis added): hopfen (6 posts) Tue Nov-24-09 04:03 AM 91. The Scam In A Nut Shell JFK gives the President and the Press Speech. George H. W. Bush calls for a New World Order. Bush, Cheney, and Silverstein plant thermite in the WTC towers, blames it on Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaida, a CIA operation setup by Zbigniew Brzezinski to fight the Orwellian Redcoat/Redshield Soviets in Afghanistan during the Carter administration. Silverstein doubles the property value of his investment. Bush and Cheney help the military industrial complex and destroy our vital civil liberties. The right are fooled into fighting islamic terrorism, much like Hitler blamed everything on the Jews, to setup a world dictatorship known as the NWO. Al Gore and a bunch of scientists collude to promote this global warming hoax with falsified data. Big oil, Rupert Murdoch, etc., is behind it because they will get monopoly powers, driving small business out of energy. Chevron funds sites like DailyKos to work for big oil to promote the global warming scam. Global warming is cyclical caused by the sun. Water is the only significant greenhouse gas. CO2 levels follow warming because it is released from warming oceans. Plant life increases, consuming the CO2, converting it to carbon and oxygen. Every climate scientist knows this. Al Gore becomes a billionaire on his cap-and-trade scam to benefit Al Gore and big oil. He promotes carbon taxes to fund a world dicatorship known as the NWO ran by the big corporations, not by democratic means. The same NWO George H. W. Bush and many others have talked about creating. The left are fooled into fighting global warming to setup and fund a world dicatorship known as the NWO. The rebel alliance strike back against the Empire... Scientists have confirmed thermite was found in the WTC dust. Unfortunately, only Cynthia McKinney was brave enough to come out and admit 9/11 was an inside job in the Congress. Hackers have shown the collusion, racketeering, conspiracy to commit fraud in what is called ClimateGate. Ron Paul, Alan Grayson, and other true conservatives and true liberals fight the Federal Reserve whose owners are central to the scam. And there is so much more to it all, but these are the key points. Baxter and lab-created, bio-engineered swine, avian, and spanish flu is another big part of it. They want to put bioweapons in the vaccines and make billions selling vaccines for the pandemic they created and hyped. They have already been caught doing just that on multiple occasions. They also put soft-kill profit-increasing ingredients of mercury so they can sell it in 10-shot vials rather than single-shot vials and adjuvants so they don't have to produce as much active ingredient. They also poison our water with the aluminum and fertilizer industry's toxic waste product known as sodium fluoride, or rat poison, in our water. Some nations have resisted this last part, but most of the U.S. and the rest of the world have been neoconned once again. A sick population is profit for big pharma. The eugenists, such as John P. Holdren in the Obama administration, and Paul R. Erhlich in the Bush administration, also fulfill their "sustainable development" goals of reducing the population. Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, George Soros, Bill Gates, Rockefellers, etc., are all eugenists. They want you enslaved or dead on what they view as their planet because they feel they are genetically superior to the rest of us and have a darwinistic right to rule. Can Twitter Compete With Google?

Google is the most popular search engine in the U.S., if not the world. There is much more to Google, of course: e-mail service ("g-mail"), highly specialized search options, widgets and gadgets, analyitics, and so on. So, can Twitter compete? Probably not, at least not in a way that would knock Google off the top of the mountain. Stan Schroeder writes in his Mashable column that Twitter is currently "great for tracking conversations, but it will never be a competitor to Google." However, he adds, "This is about to change. According to CNET, Twitter’s new VP of Operations, Santosh Jayaram, said that Twitter search will soon start crawling the links included in tweets. There’s a lot of links there, and given Twitter’s huge growth, soon these links might comprise a hefty portion of the overall web, making it a much more complete search engine that it currently is. It’s a big technical leap, but it shows that the folks at Twitter are serious about search." Full column at Mashable.com... China Blocks YouTube and Dalai Lama

The communist Chinese government has blocked YouTube for fear of its citizens seeing the Chinese brutality against monks and others in Tibet. The BBC reports that "China's official Xinhua news agency accused the Tibetan government of faking the wounds" but "No reference was made to YouTube." According to Computer World, "It isn't just youtube.com that is blocked. The billion or so websites with embedded youtube videos also won't work for those inside China's government firewalls." This all started a couple of days ago, reports say, when Google noticed a big reduction in YouTube traffic in China. Google owns YouTube. Full Article at Computer World... Meanwhile, a peace conference was just canceled in South Africa due to Chinese meddling. The damn Chinese brutalitarians are South Africa's largest trading partner, and China made it known they would not tolerate the presence of the Dalai Lama at a planned peace conference there. Bowing to Chinese pressure, SA banned the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama represents Tibet's government in exile, and the Chinese communist government eagerly crushes any reference or reminders of a once-free Tibet whenever possible, as with the YouTube blackout noted above. The conference was to have taken place on Friday, March 27, but has been "postponed." CBN News has a full report. Chicago Tribune Rehashes Google Subpoena Story, Offers Nothing New

As noted five days ago, the big mainstream media was missing the big story about a Chicago developer who has subpoenaed Google in an effort to learn the identities of some anonymous bloggers in the Uptown neighborhood. Today, finally, on February 12, The Chicago Tribune picked up the story. It was broken by reporter Lorraine Swanson, editor of News-Star, on January 28. The story in the Trib today is a watered-down rehashing of Swanson's report. Unlike Swanson, however, Trib writer James Janega did not include any quotes from the two most important players in the drama: Developer Peter Holsten and his attorney Tom Johnson. In Swanson's January 28 story, she quoted Johnson as saying, "We did issue a subpoena to Google....The subpoena asks for all the information for two particular sites that Google has." Did the Trib talk with the people who brought the subpoenas? I don't know, but if they did they didn't use their quotes. The Trib quoted some people, but they are not key players. Attorney Thomas Ramsdell, who represents local citizen's group "Fix Wilson Yard," is not a key player because Fix Wilson Yard is not a target of the subpoenas. Robert Moss, vice chair of the Chicago Bar Association's Civil Rights and Constitutional Law Committee, is also not a key player. He's not even a minor player. He's just some guy in the Trib's Rolodex of "experts" that they call for a handy quote when the key players don't pick up their phones. The Trib also quoted Matt Zimmerman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), but they are involved only as the representatives of block club Buena Park Neighbors and the two bloggers, What The Helen (defunct) and Uptown Update. Zimmerman's quote in the Trib adds nothing new to the story. "Regardless of what the motivations are, there's certainly a chilling effect as a result of subpoenas sent out specifically targeting sites criticizing this development," he told the Trib. Well, duh. As with that quote, the Trib's story adds nothing new. It's a report, but it's not "news" because by today, the story is "old" by news cycle standards. That's not to say the story has lost its importance. It is still developing and, as Zimmerman correctly said, could have a chilling effect on a segment of the public discussion about not just Wilson Yard, but any subject of public interest. Keep watching for updates on this story from Lorraine Swanson. Although her initial report is now two weeks old, it still has more information than the story today at The Chicago Tribune. Video: Fighting City Hall

You may have heard about a Chicago developer who has subpoenaed Google in an effort to learn the identities of two anonymous blogs on the city's north side. Maybe you haven't; the mainstream media has so far ignored the story. The developer, Peter Holsten, is building a massive mixed-use project on a site called "Wilson Yard," half a mile north of Wrigley Field. Wilson Yard has been a contentious issue for residents of the Uptown neighborhood, and the bloggers have been highly critical of Holsten, the city, and the local alderman. Here is a video from "Fix Wilson Yard," a grassroots group that has sued the City of Chicago over alleged misuse of tax increment funds (TIF). CNB RSS Feed

Big Media Missing Google Subpoena Story in Chicago

A Chicago developer subpoenaed two local blogs and two neighborhood groups in the Uptown neighborhood. The subpoenas were filed against Google on January 12, 2009. It's building buzz in the blogosphere, but as often happens, the mainstream media is slow to pick up the story. To be accurate, the story was broken by the weekly News-Star's Lorraine Swanson on January 28, but that's as far as it got in the "real" press. (CNB picked it up the following day.) UPDATE 2/12/09: The Chicago Tribune finally noticed this story. See: "Chicago Tribune Rehashes Google Subpoena Story, Offers Nothing New" When the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times finally do get to the story (they won't be able to ignore it much longer), they will probably not give any credit to the reporting by Swanson or to the bloggers.
