A suspect is in custody, reports The Chicago Tribune (6:22 p.m., 7/7/10): "The suspect was shot and wounded by another officer, and taken into custody, sources said. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, but the condition was unavailable." On July 8, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Officer Soderberg was "an academy instructor who volunteered his time by serving as a guide to a blind triathlete." The Sun-Times also said that "Soderberg had finished his shift and was standing near his car when a 24-year-old man attacked -- disarming him and shooting him with the officer's own weapon," a CPD spokeman said. "The suspect ran away and then robbed a civilian, police said." According to other reports, police heard shots fired by the suspect with Soderberg's gun. The July 8 Sun-Times report quoted the CPD spokesman as saying that police officers from that police station "exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was shot in the abdomen," and that "the suspect, a convicted felon, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he is under guard." The suspect is said to have 21 previous arrests on his record, including an incident in which he shot his own brother. The man was arrested on July 4, 2006 "for wounding his own brother with a .32-caliber handgun, according to police records," says the Sun-Times, which notes that he "was charged with aggravated battery, but the case was later dismissed, court records show." Obama's Broken Promise

When are people going to wake up and realize that Barack Obama is just another tool of Mayor Daley's Chicago Machine? "Change?" About the only change Obama has brought us is his rapid-fire change of position on important issues. This story, however, is about the party hack Barack Obama, $100,000 of taxpayer money he grabbed, and the shattered promise he made to the folks in Englewood. From the Sun-Times today: As a state senator, Barack Obama gave $100,000 in state money to a campaign volunteer who failed to deliver on a plan to create a botanic garden in one of Chicago's most blighted neighborhoods. Obama -- who was running for Congress when he announced the project in 2000 -- said the green space in Englewood would build ''a sense of neighborhood pride." Instead, what was supposed to be a six-block stretch of trees and paths is now a field of unfulfilled dreams, strewn with weeds, garbage and broken pavement. FULL STORY...
