Client Number 9 and Public Official A

BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE An anonymous source tells The Bench this evening that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich "might be" a member of the same sex club that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (Democrat) is being skewered for. Okay, probably not. But Blago and Spitzer do have something in common: They are both huge liabilities right now for the Democrat Party. The Wall Street Journal reports: Eliot Spitzer, the New York governor who made his name taking on the titans of finance, apologized yesterday in vague terms following reports that he used the services of a prostitute in a case being investigated by federal prosecutors. Most New Yorkers are now calling for Spitzer's resignation. And in fact, he will. But few are as openly happy about the downfall of Governor Spitzer as the folks on Wall Street: The news stunned traders on Wall Street, where Mr. Spitzer long has been viewed with fear and contempt. Some view the revelations as a huge hypocrisy for a man, who as New York's attorney general had aggressively pushed for ethics and fair play on Wall Street earlier this decade. People who clashed hardest with Mr. Spitzer are among those crowing the loudest. MORE from The Wall Street Journal... Meanwhile, the news stunned the Clinton campaign as well. The Associated Press reports that "Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton carefully sidestepped questions Monday about the sex scandal engulfing Eliot Spitzer, her home state governor and political ally." Spitzer has become a huge embarassment for Clinton and, indeed, the entire Democrat Party. As if the Democrats don't have enough problems already: Tony Rezko, in a fraud trial that could bring down Illinois's Democrat governor, and possibly even a Democrat presidential candidate (or two). Rezko, Spitzer, Blago. Cattle deals. Land deals. Clout. We've only just seen the beginning. Over the next eight months, we will likely see the Democrat Party tear itself apart. And that's not counting the Democrat Convention, which promises to be the most contentious since 1968. Remember the names Spitzer, Blagojevich, Rezko. The historians certainly will.
