BREAKING: KWAME KILPATRICK $25,000 BOND SET

DETROIT - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was arraigned Friday afternoon on charges that he assaulted a Wayne County investigator, and allowed by a magistrate to go free on a $25,000 bond with the provision that he not come in contact with any of the witnesses in the case. MORE... Detroit, a city already beseiged by crime, lousy politicians, and rotting infrastructure, seems to finally be waking up to what locals have dubbed "Hurricane Kilpatrick." After years of abusing the systems and his priveleges, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was tossed in jail yesterday for leaving town, a violation of a court issued bond. The judge, thankfully, decided that King Kwame was not royalty after all, and treated him like an ordinary citizen. Writer Nolan Finley writes today in The Detroit News: "Seeing the defiant Detroit mayor taken down several notches at once brought a sense of satisfaction to those frustrated and angry by Kilpatrick's continued presence in City Hall. But what about Detroit? Do we understand that it wasn't just Kwame Kilpatrick standing in that scorching spotlight Thursday, it was Detroit as well?" It would seem that, until yesterday, most Detroiters did not understand that. Or, perhaps, they didn't care, more interested in the latest news about hip-hop or the contestants on American Idol. Perhaps, in the coming days, as more Detroiters absorb the latest episode of Kilpatrick's self destruction, they will come to understand how one man can pull down a whole city. Finley continues: There's nothing to celebrate in the ongoing fall of Kwame Kilpatrick, because the collateral damage has been so severe. Just months ago, before the Kilpatrick text message scandal erupted, Detroit was being touted as America's comeback city....And best of all, we were starting to believe our own hype....The Kilpatrick scandal has been a meat grinder, shredding the region's hopes and setting us back to our darker days of frustration, divisiveness and despair. Meanwhile, many are calling for Mayor Kilpatrick's head. The Attorney General may file new charges today, reports The Detroit News, and Detroit's own city council is eager to get this mess behind them as well. Prominent Democrats around Michigan are demanding Kilpatrick's resignation. Gov. Jennifer Granholm will hold hearings September 3 to discuss ways to force the rogue mayor out of office.
