Slaves and Copperheads

This is appropriate for Black History Month, and another excellent posting from the Rogers Park Rake blog. Writes Tom at the Rake, "Many of us believe that slavery ended with the Civil War, but a look at reality in the 21st century quickly reveals otherwise." The full posting... Slavery might exist today in North America if President Lincoln had listened to the "Peace Democrats." During the Civil War, there are those who would prefer to have friendly conversations with the enemy than to give them the fight they wanted. They were known as the Coppeprheads, or "Peace Democrats," and had they prevailed the Confederate States of America might still exist as a slave-based economy. Thank God for Abraham Lincoln and his resolve. Read about if for yourself: "With the conclusion of the war in 1865 the Peace Democrats were thoroughly discredited. Most Northerners believed, not without reason, that Peace Democrats had prolonged war by encouraging the South to continue fighting in the hope that the North would abandon the struggle."
