Chicago's 49th Ward Aldermanic Race Heats Up
by Kevin Lane
In a debate held on February 3 at the Community Church of Rogers Park, incumbent 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore was booed off stage after saying that he was responsible for the committee to protect the Rogers Park lake front from the expansion of Lake Shore Drive and construction of a marina at Loyola. The debate, sponsored by RPCAN, drew a large turnout despite the very cold weather.
The aldermanic race between Jim Ginderske, Chris Adams, Don Gordon and Joe Moore is one of the most interesting races that the 49th Ward has seen in recent years. The candidates continue to debate many issues, such as crime, business development, community health care and affordable housing. Jim Ginderske is taking a stand on campaign finance and vows not to take contributions from real estate developers to avoid special interest concerns in what has become a thriving real estate market. Controversial issues include condo conversions, the demolition of single-family properties in favor of multi-residential buildings, and the displacement of many low-income residents in the 49th Ward.
