Blago Donuts Dunked for $28 Million
I still love their coffee and donuts, even though I cringe at the thought that some of the money I've spent there to get my sugar and caffeine fixes went to Rod Blagojevich:
Crain's - A former Gov. Rod Blagojevich fundraiser who built a reputation for recruiting Indian and Pakistani immigrants to the Dunkin' Donuts chain is facing an onslaught of 14 foreclosure cases seeking to collect more than $28.4 million. Amrit J. Patel, dubbed an "accidental Pied Piper" of South Asian franchisees in a 1999 Wall Street Journal profile, has 18 Dunkin' Donuts franchises in the Chicago area, including a location at O'Hare International Airport, according to his company's Web site. Blagojevich has a long history with Dunkin Donuts. He loves their coffee and pastries too, of course, but his relationship has been a bit more complex than, say, yours or mine when it comes to the business end of things. To wit, this article from February 5, 2009 (emphasis added):
And indeed, almost immediately upon election, Blagojevich contrived to sell a truly awesome smorgasbord of state jobs and regulatory favors to the highest bidder — everything from contracts for Dunkin' Donuts franchises at toll oases to a state-parks administrator job allegedly bought with a $1,500 check to Blagojevich's seven-year-old daughter.
