Songs for the Great Decline
Top Video: The great Ray Davies does a post-Kinks live performance of "Shangri-la," a beautiful, bittersweet song abou the decline and decay of his beloved Britain. It applies to any Western nation today. Listen carefully. Listen with your heart, and with your head. ("Electric Proms" October 28, 2007.)
Lower Video: The Moody Blues do "English Sunset," a song of a similar sentiment. The title, of course, alludes a sunset on England, a sharp reminder that the Empire upon which "the sun never sets" is slipping into a long, dark night on its timeline. (Recorded live in 2000, venue unknown.)
