Russia Escalates Fighting in Georgia

Georgia called for a ceasefire on Saturday after Russia sharply escalated an offensive to take back control of the capital of Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia and expanded a bombing campaign to hit Georgian targets outside the war zone. George W. Bush, the US president, said attacks by Russia on Georgian targets outside South Ossetia were a ”dangerous escalation” of the crisis and called on Moscow to halt the bombing immediately.
