Kangaroo: It's What's For Dinner in Russia
Australian exports of beef and kangaroo meat to Russia is big business. But there is trouble in the industry:
"Russia has cracked down on several Australian meat producers and imposed temporary import bans on several processing plants," reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). "The restrictions come as Australia's meat exports to Russia skyrocket. Russia has announced it has imposed a temporary ban on meat from several processing plants in Australia."
The ABC report continues to say that four Aussy meat plants are affected by the ban, three of which process kangaroo ("roo") meat. "A spokesman for the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia says only one of those plants has been officially notified so far," says ABC.
The Bench advises you to avoid Australian kangaroo meat until this situation is straightened out. Just how do you cook kangaroo meat? Let's turn to a fellow American: "Well, we can only tell you what we do in Maine when there’s a special on kangaroo meat at the local market." (Why don't we see kangaroo meat specials in Chicago? I mean, aren't we paying too much for roo meat in Chicago? Why no specials?)
