Crack Den Dispersed at 1135 W. Lunt Avenue

June 26, 2008 - Chicago - At 9:00 a.m. today, three Cook County Sheriff's deputies and two Chicago police officers used a handheld battering ram to roust squatters from the troubled apartment building at 1135 W. Lunt Avenue in Rogers Park. The operation went down between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. this morning.

According to witnesses, there were six to eight people illegally using a vacant apartment unit in the building. The squatters are reported to have changed the lock on the door without the knowledge of the building management. For weeks, the squatters allegedly used the apartment as a crack den.

1135 W. Lunt is near the larger apartment complex at 1145-50 W. Lunt, where tenants are still upset about a "stealth rehab operation" that was put into their building on May 1st (related story). Lunt Avenue seems to have become a gathering place for serious drug users and sellers recently.

Witnesses said that the squatters were not arrested, but simply evicted as trespassers. It is unknown at this time whether charges will be pressed against any of them
