Blagojevich: Demolition Man
An astute (and very cute) reader writes: "Blogo wants to spend 40 million on this and he can't keep the Lunt bus going?!"
Yes, sad but true. Idiot Governor Rod "Official A" Blagojevich wants to spend $40 million to tear down a perfectly good building. Why? The building is Cole Hall, scene of the horrible NIU shooting on Feb. 14. This is stupid, and a bad precedent.
Suppose we follow Rod's example. To follow it logically, we would have to tear down a lot of buildings. Public buildings, office buildings, houses, apartment buildings, anywhere that somebody has been murdered. Should we also demolish public sidewalks and street corners where murders occur? How about parks? What are the standards for choosing such potential demolition sites?
Perhaps Official A wants to tear down Cole Hall because it was five who were murdered. Or maybe because it was by gunfire. Maybe he gets a spooky feeling because the crime was committed by a creepy nutjob. In any event, it's a bad idea.
Or maybe not. It has diverted a little bit of attention away - albeit momentarily - from the ongoing and getting-hotter investigation into Blago's corrupt administration. Cole Hall versus Tony Rezko? Probably. But whether or not Blago's demolition diversion tactics work, it seems that the demolition of his own administration is virtually a done deal.
