"What is Rotten Must be Removed"
Finally, the perpetrators of one of the worst genocides in modern history will be brought to justice. Or, at least, to trial. An estimated two million people were murdered by Pol Pot and his lunatic gangs. Many folks were killed simply for being educated. Background:
Throughout Cambodia, deadly purges were conducted to eliminate remnants of the "old society" - the educated, the wealthy, Buddhist monks, police, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and former government officials. Ex-soldiers were killed along with their wives and children. Anyone suspected of disloyalty to Pol Pot, including eventually many Khmer Rouge leaders, was shot or bludgeoned with an ax. Long ago when I first lived in DC I had a roommate from Cambodia, who turned out to be the Director of Linguistics from the University of Pnom Penh (sp?). I came home from work one day and she was sitting in the living room with a group of Cambodian men and they were all in tears. Pol Pot had just overrun the capital city and they knew they could not go home. They would face execution if they did. The last I heard she was looking for nanny jobs because her university credentials weren't recognized over here. There was no justice for her, but at least she was alive.
