Common Cup cafe just opened last Monday in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood. They waited weeks and months for licensing, permits and inspections. They, and the City, made sure that health laws and food safety laws will be obeyed, construction was done safely and - well, you get the idea. They will be regularly inspected in the future. They will pay permit fees and business taxes and income taxes.
Standing in Common Cup today, I saw another food service enterprise across the street. The business has no sign, so I don't know what to call it. It has no permits. It is not inspected. It pays no fees or taxes. God knows how safe the home made food is. If somebody gets ill, what recourse would they have? Does this "restaurant" have liability insurance?
Let's leave you with this question: If YOU wanted to build a plywood pushcart and sell hot dogs or whatever, would the City allow you to do it without following procedure? Try it, amigo.
While driving by this exact location yesterday (the cart was there), I witnessed a drug handoff about 10' to the south on Greenview.
ReplyDeleteI suspect the cart proprieters didn't call the police. Funny how loking the other way can be kind of contagious isn't it?
I myself tend to be "live and let live" on the cart issue, but you make a valid point about whether I would be allowed to have my own cart and sell food on the corner.
I don't know if it's just me, but I see more and more of these. A Joe Moore supporter and property owner on Paulina and Lunt allows this cart on the corner in front of their property (across from St. Jerome's). I wonder if St. Jerome's doesn't allow it and so they moved acoss the street?
You and Jocelyn are miserable humans. We all know you have no intentions whatsoever of eating anything from those carts. The carts serve friends, family, acquaintances, it's called community. Face it Pendejos, you hate Mexicans. Not everyone can be a repressed, angry whitey like you.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to get a loving comment from a Liberal like "Virginia." Notice how "she" uses the racist term "whitey," turning a food safety issue into a race issue. Believe me, if these were unlicensed white folks selling unrefrigerated brie I would be just at disgusted. And no, Virginia, I don't intend to eat anything off of an uninspected plywood food cart. Only a fool would. As for community, do you think a licensed, inspected business does not serve the community? And who serves it better; the one that practices regulated, monitored food safety or the one that does not? Do you think the cart people are giving the food away, or charging for their elotes? Virginia - or whatever your name is - you're a moron. You're a tool. You're an obvious racist and a sucker for the Party Line. I don't hate Mexicans, Virginia, I hate you.
