UPDATE: April 19, 2007 (ABC NEWS) — For the first time, investigators are saying the chemical that has sickened and killed pets in the United States may have been intentionally added to pet food ingredients by Chinese producers. QUESTION: Why the hell are we buying food from China? WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A chemical linked to a huge U.S. pet food recall has been found in another ingredient used to make products for dogs and cats, U.S health officials and an agricultural company said on Thursday. Melamine, used in plastics and fertilizer, has turned up in rice protein concentrate imported from China and shipped to five pet food manufacturers. U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials suspect the chemical, previously found in wheat gluten, led to earlier pet fatalities and illness. FULL STORY...

  1. I am not a conspiracy theorist, however nothing would surprise me where the Chinese are concerned. DOD has often talked about the cyber probing emanating from the mainland and targeting our defense systems.

    However, from reading the article, it seems they are practicing the worst tendencies of good old fashioned capitalism: cut corners and do what is necessary to keep prices down and profits up.
