David Michael Green cannot be the only self-described progressive (liberal) to be verrrry disappointed by the lame first year of Barack Obama's Failing Regime. Green lunges at Obama's political jugular in a Dec. 20 post on his blog, The Regressive Antidote. To read the post, you might think Green is a crazy right-wing blogger. Nope, he's actually a crazy left-wing blogger who has been awaked by a cold slap of unwelcome reality. Here's an excerpt from his must-read post:

Hey did you hear about the iconic African-American guy who plays golf, and whose relationship with the public is in a free-fall lately? No, as a matter of fact I'm not talking about Tiger Woods.

You know, I've really been trying not to write an article every other week about all the things I don't like about Barack Obama. But the little pr--k is making it very hard.
Like any good progressive, I've gone from admiration to hope to disappointment to anger when it comes to this president. Now I'm fast getting to rage.

How much rage? I find myself thinking that the thing I want most from the 2010 elections is for his party to get absolutely clobbered, even if that means a repeat of 1994. FOXNews.com reports this afternoon that "The White House fired back Wednesday at Republican critics, particularly Dick Cheney, who have accused the administration of taking a light approach to fighting terrorism in the aftermath of the attempted attack on a Northwest Airlines flight."

NOW, in what could be regarded as an overreaction to the Flight 253 affair, the Obama Regime is "reviewing targets for a possible retaliation strike on Yemeni soil in the wake of a failed Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound airliner, which al-Qaeda in Yemen claims to have organized." Correct me if I'm wrong, folks, but wasn't one of the main criticisms of our invasion of Iraq that it had "nothing to do with Sept. 11, 2001?" So, how now will Obama and the Democrats justify "retaliation" against Yemen? (You don't have to answer, it's a rhetorical question.)

All of this, of course, comes in the wake of the attempted Christmas Day bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 as it approached Detroit. Since then, the Obama Regime has come under heavy criticism for its lazy attitude toward national security, especially as regards terrorism.

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., was on CBS's "Early Show" and lambasted Obama for treating terrorism and security so lightly. DeMint said he is happy that Obama addressed "systemic failures" leading up to the Northwest Flight 253 incident, but said he has done virtually nothing since being elected to improve or even maintain our security. Obama has also been criticized for not a "lack of urgency" immediately after the failed bombing attempt.

"The president has downplayed terrorism since he took office. He doesn't use the word anymore," DeMint told "Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith. "He waited eight months to nominate someone as head of [the Transportation Security Administration] and then they wanted to rush it through without any debate or roll call vote. So the focus on terror as a threat is real important and I'm glad to see that the president has stated the goal of finding out what went wrong so we can fix it." More at CBSNews.com...

According to a Dec. 28 report from ABC News, "Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007, according to American officials and Department of Defense documents."

I'm about to vent.

Screw you, Senator Dick Durbin, and screw you, Mayor Richard M. Daley, and a big shove-it-up-your-rear to Comrade Barack Obama. A big middle-finger salute to all of the idiot voters who support them and other legislators who think bringing Gitmo prisoners to Illinois after putting them on trial in New York City is a good idea.

A special "screw you" is due George W. Bush, however, under whose watch the former Gitmo prisoners were released. But here's the difference between Bush and Obama: Bush, stupid though he may have been, at least had the sense to not allow the murderous lunatics once held at Guantanamo Bay to step foot on US soil. Obama, with aid and comfort from the likes of Durbin and other Democrat traitors, actually wants them here. Specifically, at the Thomson Correctional Center in northeastern Illinois.

WBBM 780 AM - The Lake County Crime Stoppers are asking for help in the search for a Round Lake Beach man wanted for sexually abusing a teen.

Izaac Mendoza, 26, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse in August 2008, in a non-consensual incident involving a teenage girl between 13 and 16 years old, Lake County Crime Stoppers Director Andy Anderson said.

Mendoza was out on bond and was expected to appear for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 14 2008 but did not appear. A warrant was issued for his arrest the same day, Anderson said.

Mendoza is described as a Hispanic man, 5-feet-10 and 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, Anderson said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222. SOURCE: WBBM 780 AM

The pro-democracy protests in Iran have been going on for months, but it the regime's response has become bloodier. Apparently not content with simply bashing heads, the theocratic dictatorship's thugs have shot and killed at least five people over the weekend, including a nephew of opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi. (Note: As of 2:11 p.m. CST, most news outlets report four or five dead; The Guardian UK reported nine dead earlier today.)

Meanwhile, Barack Obama is enjoying the Hawaiian sun and doing nothing about the Persian peoples' nightmare of murderous oppression.

Many thanks to Warner T. Huston for reminding Illinoisans that the February 2, 2010 primary elections are just around the proverbial corner. He provided us with a handy list of Republican candidates with links to their campaign web sites.

"Just a reminder, folks," wrote Warner on Dec. 26, "Since Illinois moved its primary up… waaaaay up … we are only 38 days away from primary voting which begins on Feb. 2!"

Warner included a good list of the state-wide and congressional offices that are up for election in the February 2010 primaries; the list includes links to Republican candidates' websites, but Warner also has a link to a list of the websites of all candidates, including Democrats.

Remember, too, that absentee voting started on Thursday, December 24. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, "Voters no longer need a reason to vote absentee in the election, so they can start picking their candidates for the Feb. 2 election."

Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian man with al-Qaida ties apparently tried to blow up [Northwest Airlines Flight 253] flight as it was descending over Detroit Metro Airport on Christmas afternoon. I still love their coffee and donuts, even though I cringe at the thought that some of the money I've spent there to get my sugar and caffeine fixes went to Rod Blagojevich:

Israeli President Shimon Peres sends his wishes "each of you and all of us a happy and merry Christmas." (Videos below.) That's nice of President Peres, really very nice. He delivered his 50-second greeting in a warm, sincere tone. Contrast that to Barack Hussein Obama, who gave a chilly 3-second "Happy holidays, best wishes for the new year" via Organizing For America, his puppet socialist propaganda machine. Why is it that the president of Israel has no problem wishing Christians a "merry Christmas," but the religiously non-descript, marxist Obama just can't force himself to utter that offensive phrase?

Here's a funny post about end-of-the-year articles that try to analyze and review the previous decade. Andy Borowitz manages to make a fool of himself by mocking those who do so, in a hilariously ironic twist. Borowitz wrote a short piece at the Huffington Post in which he said, "Between now and New Year's, gas-bags of every stripe will be offering their bloated reviews of the decade about to end."

The Andy Borowitz bio at HuffPo says he's a comedian. Uh huh. Perhaps he was trying to be funny, then, and is not as stupid as this dumb passage in his brief little post makes him seem:

"The decade began with Bush f---ing the voters and ended with Tiger f---ing everyone else."

Andy Borowitz probably spent hours crafting what he thought was a clever tie-in of G.W. Bush and Tiger Woods. He failed embarrassingly, but the libtards who follow him probably think he's a crafty wordsmith.

Aside from the crudity of it, that sentence shows an incredible ignorance of both the calendar and of arithmetic. Bush took office in 2001, but Borowitz refers indirectly to the Florida ballot confusion of the 2000 presidential election. 2000 was the last year of that decade, not the beginning of one. In reality, it Bill Clinton who ended the decade of 1991-2000 by f---ing the economy and our military and intelligence services. For a good part of that decade, Clinton and was about as busy as a tiger f---ing any skirt that got near him.

As for Tiger, he was busy being busy in 2009, which is not the last year of this decade. Here, let me explain it for you, just in case you're as stupid as Andy Borowitz.

See, 2010 is NOT the first year of a new decade. 2010 is the last year of this decade, the one we are currently in. Someone should explain to Borowitz that the "10" in 2010 means that it is the 10th year in the decade. Gad, we just went through this nonsense in 1999, when the math-and-calendar challenged crowd thought that 2000 would be the first year of the new milliennium when, in fact, 2001 was. See, the "1" in 2001 is your clue.

Try this little excercise. Count to ten. One, two, three... and so on. When you get to 10, you will proceed to eleven. See the "1" at the end of 11? Another clue: You're now starting the next ten. "9" was not the last of the first 10, and 2009 is not the last of the first 10 years of this decade. Got it?

Although we have another year left in this decade, let me be the first to nominate Andy Borowitz as "Gregorian Loser of the Decade." I may be premature with that, but I suspect that nobody will write a dumber post about "the end of the decade" than the witless Borowitz has managed.

Please help the Crow Creek Sioux in their struggle against an unusual land grab by Washington D.C. Have a look at the petition below, and please sign it. The Sioux made a video that explains their desperate situation, with the long but appropriate title, "As Obama promises 100 billion a year for UN Climate Scam, Our people live like this!!!"

A summary of the landgrab situation here, from USA Today:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — About 7,112 acres of land on a poverty-stricken South Dakota Indian reservation was auctioned Thursday by the Internal Revenue Service but the buyer's identity is a mystery. The IRS auctioned the land on one of America's poorest Indian reservations after efforts Wednesday to block the sale in U.S. District Court failed.

The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe had gone to court to try and stop the IRS auction to settle overdue employment taxes it claims are owed by the tribe. But the auction went ahead, with a winning bid of $2,577,210, IRS spokeswoman Carrie Resch said

"It's the first time I've ever heard of the IRS moving against tribally owned property in this manner," said Robert Williams Jr., a law professor and director of the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program at the University of Arizona. An excerpt from the petition reads as follows:

On December 3, 2009 the Internal Revenue Service unlawfully auctioned off 7100 acres located on Crow Creek Sioux Tribal land.

The land is owned by Crow Creek Tribal Farms, Inc. a Tribal corporation and distinct legal entity from the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe.

According to the recent motion for temporary restraining order, filed by the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, the IRS seized and auctioned the land to recover $3,123,789.73 dollars in unpaid employment taxes. The document states, Because of erroneous tax advice received from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe became delinquent in the payment of employment taxes collected by the IRS beginning in 2003. The BIA had informed the Tribe that, because it was a federally recognized Tribe, it was not necessary to pay federal employment taxes.

The Crow Creek Indian Reservation was created by the 1868 Treaty, Act of April 29, 1868, 15 Stat. 635, and by Section 6, Act of March 2, 1889, 25 Stat. 888.

"Taxes collectd by the IRS?" Wait a minute. By treaty, the Indian nations are - nations. For Washington to tax any of the reservations created by treaty is illegal. Imagine Canada trying to tax Illinois, Michigan or North Dakota. It's long past time for Washington to live up to the treaties that it made with the Sioux and other Indian nations within our borders.

(Updated/Revised) - I first stumbled into Standee's Diner in March of 1997. Now, sadly, it will close at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2010 due to a dispute with the landlord.

Standee's Diner ("Snack and Dine") is (still) located at 1133 West Granville Avenue in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood, half a block east of N. Broadway. The good news: Standee's will be quickly reincarnated in a new location. Currently located just a few steps west of the CTA's Granville Red Line station, they plan to reopen just east of the tracks.

One local resident, TheFemGeek, posted this on Twitter: "Standee's is closing at the end of the month and hopefully they will open across the street in the future but it'll be under new management," and "In the next few days a waitress who's been working @ Standee's forever will sell some photos she's taken of the place over the yrs." Another local, "blergh," posted this on Twitter: "OH MY GOD STANDEE'S LOST ITS LEASE AND WILL BE CLOSING D: LIFE AS I KNOW IT IS OVER D:"

The little diner's atmosphere felt like a scene from a movie. With a great juke box, a menu full of homestyle cooking and a grandfathered wooden cutting counter next to the grill, the place was packed with character. Local character, and all of the characters were willing to chat. Some great conversations in there, about everything from politics to snowfalls to crooked aldermen. Sometimes we'd grab a bite to eat, then get a pitcher of beer at Gino's North, just the other side of the El tracks. Chrome on the counter and behind it, the place sparkled in a dim sort of way.

Standee's would have been perfect in a movie scene, but even moreso it had a dreamlike quality. Not quite real, I guess, because it was so out of synch with the corporate dining that so many of us have become accustomed to.

Drunks on the sidewalk; occassionally one would come in and start screaming at the walls. The staff would immediately kick them out. Loyola students sitting with a cup of coffee and a stack of books for hours. Drunks tripping home, stopping in for coffee and fries, sometimes falling asleep in a booth. There was very little PC about the joint - lewd jokes were frequently shouted from one end of the dining counter to the other.

I remember an elderly waitress, Anna, who came to America from Germany. She never lost her heavy accent and was always impatient with customers. I loved her. Standee's would always have a pie of the day, and one time she suggested a slice of the "peeka dee kahn" to me. I had to ask her three times to repeat that until I realized that she meant the pecan pie. I ordered it. It was homemade. It was delicious, the best peeka dee kahn pie I've ever had to this day. May Anna rest in peace.

The food was the main attraction for me, with the sometimes Felliniesque sideshow being just an added benefit. Think grandma's for Sunday dinner. The Disjointed Chicken was something sent to Earth by the angels, I will always believe. The portions were huge, the prices always fair.

Standee's will be missed. There might be a petition effort to "save" the diner, as indicated by an expired post on Craigslist. The current landlord, of course, does not have to obey a petition. Even if Standee's rises from the ashes in a new location across the street, as TheFemGeek indicates it might, it cannot be what it was. The character, the unique ambience, the delightful weirdness, all of that will be lost forever. You have nine days to experience it again, or perhaps, for your first time. There will not be a next time.

Great interview (in the video below) with some of the most active, and most interesting, local upstarts. "We Are Change Chicago" is a protest group that fights the good fight. I don't agree with everything they say, but I agree with what they stand for: Free speech and a willingness to fight the powers that be. "The HP Webcam does not pick up negroes," says Desi, a black man who bought a new HP Mediasmart computer with facial recognition software. This allows a web camera to recognize a human face and follow that person. Trouble is, if your skin is too dark it seems to have trouble recognizing you. Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) would love this thing.

In the video below, we see Desi and a white co-worker named Wanda as they demonstrate the facial recognition software on a new HP Mediasmart computer. It follows Wanda just fine, but Desi seems invisible to the machine.

Naval Aviator, Commander Jerry Wilson wrote a powerful - and ominous - letter. He warns us of what may come sooner than most people think, and he is not afraid to say the unthinkable. How likely is a revolution in the United States? I mean an actual, in-the-streets, house to house, block to block revolution? Wilson wrote, in part:

"Mark my words friends. All across America groups are forming. They are forming out of anger and out of desperation at the thought of losing America. They're not militia groups, terrorists as the Department of Homeland security would have you believe; they are Americans, loyal to the Constitution. They are mothers and fathers and grandparents. They belong to groups like the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, the Peaceful Resistance, the Constitution Party, the Young Conservatives, the 9/12 Project, and Grassfire. Right now they are fragmented, each focused on their own cause."

I fear that Wilson is correct in, essentially, predicting a civil war or revolution. Call it what you will. While I don't want to see it happen, and I don't believe it is inevitable, the likelihood grows stronger by the week.

"As for you, why, you'll be shocked because you didn't see it coming," Wilson writes, "And eventually you'll be saddened when you see that we have truly lost the way of life with which you grew up. You'll be saddened that your children and grandchildren live in a socialist, government- controlled gulag where their every movement from cradle to grave is tracked by the government."

When you see well-dressed, blue-haired old ladies holding protest signs and marching in the streets, as we have now at many tea party events, it's a sign that something has shifted dramatically. We're mad as hell, and we're on the verge of not being willing to take it any longer.

More excerpts from Wilson's letter:

"But sometime in the next two years, our government is going to do something really stupid and these groups will come together. Watch for it, wait for it - get ready. It will happen.

"There are a growing number of citizens in the US that are ready to fight to shut down the government's grab of personal freedom, its blatant abuse of the constitution, and it's an attempt to replace the American way of life with socialism. You have to listen carefully to hear them, but they are there. I won't start that fight, but when it goes down I will join it."

No, this is not a paid commercial. I just happen to love this latest for the Illinois Lottery. The spots were written by EnergyBBDO, and directed by Aaron Ruell. The music was laid down by Spank! Music and Sound Design. I spoke with folks at both of those Chicago companies, and they confirmed my fear that there is only one television spot, and only one radio spot, each with different lyrics. Dec. 21, 2009 - Early this morning, the U.S. Senate voted 60 to 40 early to limit debate on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's amendment to the healthcare reform bill. That now allows a final vote on Christmas Eve to pass the bill the bill. It was a tight vote, with a lot of deal making by Democrats leading up to it. The required 60 votes was guaranteed after Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) agreed on Saturday to vote for the bill “if tougher abortion restrictions were added to the bill after it passes the Senate.” Nelson's vote was considered crucial.

However, Nelson’s real motivation may have been a huge sweetheart deal given to him in exchange for his vote. According to FoxNews, “Nebraska's Nelson won permanent federal aid for his state's expanded Medicaid population, a benefit worth up to $100 million over 10 years. Other states get the federal aid for three years, but Nebraska's benefit is indefinite. His state also got an exemption for nonprofit insurance companies from a health insurance company tax. Many believe this was targeted at Mutual of Omaha, but senior Democratic aides would not confirm that.”

In short, Nebraska will get better Medicaid service than the rest of the nation. Many are calling the deal a “bribe” made to Nelson in exchange for his vote, and that’s good reason for most Americans to be upset with Nelson and the Democrats. "As a result of Nelson’s performance in his role of Hamlet in the health care deliberations, we will have two health care systems in this country; one for Nebraska and one for the other 49 states," notes Warner Todd Huston, writing as "Publius" at BigGovernment.com. However, many fair-minded Nebraskans are upset by Nelson’s "sellout." One such Nebraskan is Becky F. Hollibaugh, D.O. (osteopathic physician), a family practitioner at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, Nebraska. Dr. Hollibaugh wrote a scathing letter to Sen. Nelson (below), which she shared with blogger Michelle Malkin on December 20. Her letter is currently a hot item on blogs and quickly became a widely circulated email.

Dear Senator Nelson:

I send this message under “Tort Reform” because the current monstrosity you have pledged your support to says nothing whatsoever about Tort Reform. You have sold the physicians of Nebraska for zilch (zilch for us, but beaucoup federal bucks for you and the liberal partisans in this state). As a family practice physician in Small Town, Nebraska, I was counting on you to be the lone voice of Democratic sanity on this issue, but you sold me out.

I will dedicate every spare minute of my time and every spare dollar I have to defeating you, should you run for re-election. The long hours I spent on my medical education and the long hours I spend treating my patients are nothing but chump change to you and your Democrat colleagues in Washington. I especially can’t wait for your equivocation and milquetoast evasion when your “compromises” on the abortion language in the bill are silently erased or quietly (on-little-legislative-cat’s-feet) eviscerated in the House/Senate give-and-take. Go on: Bet me that you won’t wuss-out on this issue!

I know you won’t give two-seconds to this letter, but I had to write it. I’m a primary care doctor in YOUR state, and you sold me out. I didn’t slog through 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school and 3 years of residency just to have you hand my career and my patient/doctor relationships over to government lifers. Your gutless acquiescence to Obama and Harry Reid and ‘Nanny’ Pelosi will NOT be forgotten.

Thank you, Ben, for forcing doctors like me to earn less than the repairmen who fix our appliances. Case in point: We recently had our dishwasher fixed. The repairman who came to our house charged $65 just to come and ‘diagnose’ the problem, then charged another $180 to ‘fix’ the problem. You and your fellow lawmakers have fixed MY going rate (Medicare) at $35 per-visit. Thank you for securing such a ‘lucrative’ rate for me! Thank you so much for making me–someone with 8 years of education!–make less than a mechanic or appliance repair technichian. And thanks especially for falling in line with Obama and the rest of the Democrats to make such a socialist system permanent.

You have my disgust and disdain forever, you socialist-coddling coward.

Police are asking for help finding a 15-year-old South Side girl who has not been seen by her family since she left for her charter high school on Friday. Brianna "Bri-Bri" Lacey, who lives near 80th Street and South Eberhart Avenue, left for school Friday morning and has not been seen by her family since, according to a police alert issued today. Chicago News Bench wonders: Was the guy who hit a cop in Washinton D.C. with a well-placed snowball on Saturday, December 19 and was he ever arrested?

We analyzed a video from the massive snowball fight that happened during the weekend blizzard in Washington D.C. See our graphic here to see the snowballer in action. It happens very quickly in the video, which is why we isolated these frames as still shots. Click the graphic to enlarge it.

The snowball fight turned weird when a cop started waving his pistol. He did not appear to have pointed it at anybody, however. Early in the video, at 0:43, we see a man throw a snowball at the cop, and hits his target. Later, at 3:35 into the video, the cop grabs accuses the wrong guy of throwing the snowball. Although we cannot know why the cop had his pistol out of its holster, we can be sure of one thing: The guy who threw the snowball is guilty of assault on a police officer, and his face shows clearly in the video.
