Helms Death Reveals Liberal Hatred

How ironic that the former Republican Senator from North Carolina should die on the Fourth of July. (Brings to mind an old James Cagney number.) Helms was very controversial. Called a racist by many, "Senator No" by some, he was nevertheless highly influential. Regardless of your opinion of the man, his enormous presence for so long cannot be denied. Among his many accomplishments, Helms was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for a long, long time. The death of Sen. Helms today gives us another insight into the sickness that pervades so many self-proclaimed "liberals." Not all, certainly, but many. As you read negatives comments about the "racist" Jesse Helms today and this week, keep in mind that one of the longest serving Democrats in the U.S. Senate is Robert Byrd, a former Ku Klux Klan leader. The liberal media have given him a pass for decades, glancing past him when he makes inane speeches like you would with a crazy uncle. As far as I can tell, Jesse Helms was never a member of the Klan. But just as Byrd probably repented, Helms did as well. In fact, Sen. Byrd paid homage to Sen. Helms when Helms retired from politics in late 2002. An Associate Press story from November 21, 2002: Longtime Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., complimented Sen. Helms in a tribute Monday for being a man "of immense integrity, indisputable honesty, unqualified patriotism and absolute independence ... if one did not already know where Jesse Helms stood, Jesse Helms was always ready to tell you where he stood." (Source) You could ask singer Bono of U2, who thought Jesse was a good man. As with any controversial politician, there will be people remembering him fondly, some bitterly, others neutrally. The conservative press today is busy remembering him bittersweetly, acknowledging all of his negatives along with his positives. The liberal press today is mostly civil about Helm's passing, but of course there will be the usual insensitive, brutal and snarky coverage. When Ted Kennedy dies, no major conservative publication will have a headline that says, "Kennedy Finally Dead." Today, some on the so-called compassionate Left just couldn't resist such a low stunt. The Village Voice, for example, with this disgusting headline (ripped from a Google news search): Jesse Helms Finally Dies - Village Voice, NY - Jesse Helms, an unrepentant supporter of unnatural causes throughout his life, died of natural causes this morning at the age of 86. ... I'm not sure why the Village Voice link is dead. Perhaps a lot of their readers objected to the harshness of the headline. Perhaps their server is overloaded. Perhaps Helm's ghost is messing with them. RELATED: Peace Out, Jesse Helms Former Sen.
