HAZMAT CLEANUP IN ROGERS PARK: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE, TOO SLOW

ASBESTOS-laden debris and rubble were cleared away from the now-infamous North Shore School demolition site in Rogers Park, Chicago today.

The work began several days ago, and The Bench photographed the cleanup crew this afternoon. Several disturbing things were observed:

First: The sign on the fence at the site (top photo) says that respirators "are required" in the demo site. But photos taken by The Bench today show workers not wearing respirators as they worked in the piles of hazardous rubble. Some wore their respirators hanging loose around their neck; others didn't bother to pretend. (Click on a photo to see large image.)

Second: The school building itself, what remains of it, is still wide open and appeared dry. Wind blowing through it carries dust into Leone Park directly behind.

Third: There were children playing in the Leone Park playground directly behind this dangerous site.

Fourth: The cleanup crew was hosing down the debris on the ground with water from a fire hydrant - water paid for by you and me, fellow Taxpayers.

Fifth: 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore was nowhere in site, even though he should be going door to door apologizing to neighbors for helping to unleash this monster on Rogers Park.

To be continued....
